Complicated Grief Following the Traumatic Loss of a Child: A Systematic Review

Grief from Afar: Parental bereavement for fallen "lone soldiers" in the Israel Defense Forces-an exploration of parents' continuing bond with their deceased offspring who is buried in a different country

Based on continuing bonds theory, this research assessed the manifestation of a continuing relationship for bereaved parents with their deceased offspring who is buried in a different country. This qualitative interpretive phenomenological study is based on interviews with seven bereaved parents whose offspring died during military service in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and were buried in Israel, whilst the parents live outside of Israel. Analysis revealed three themes: (a) fulfillment of their offspring's will; (b) commemoration; (c) physical and emotional proximity to their offspring. The geographical distance from the grave presented a challenge to parents' continuing bonds with their deceased offspring, manifesting as a dialectical bond of distance and closeness with their offspring. A key finding was the relational dynamic of the parent-offspring relationship through the continuing bond that emerged following the death of their offspring. Implications for parental bereavement support are considered.

Loss of a Parent in Disney and Pixar Films: What We Can Learn?

Early parental loss is a tragic experience for children causing complex reactions to the loss. Providing a supportive environment where they can express their feelings is crucial to help them cope with this challenging experience. This study analyses the depiction of parental death in animated films by Disney and Pixar using a multimethod design and including the QUAGOL approach. We identified 13 films showing the death of one or both parents. The qualitative analysis of the films, published from 1937 until 2022, revealed seven concepts that potentially affect the way children see their grieving process reflected in the films: The representational techniques, finding protection and relationships, searching for identity, being different and having alternative skills, talking about death, dealing with emotions and coping with the loss. The identified films can be used to open a conversation with children who have lost one or both parents to discuss their situation.

Prevalence and correlates of ICD-11 prolonged grief disorder among adults living in Ukraine during the war with Russia

BACKGROUND

Although high rates of bereavement are evident in war-affected populations, no study has investigated the prevalence and correlates of probable ICD-11 prolonged grief disorder (PGD) under these circumstances.

METHODS

Participants were 2050 adults who participated in a nationwide survey exploring the effects of the Ukraine-Russia war on the daily lives and mental health of Ukrainian people.

RESULTS

Of the total sample, 87.7% (n = 1797) of people indicated a lifetime bereavement. In the full sample, 11.4% met the diagnostic requirements for probable ICD-11 PGD, and amongst those with a lifetime bereavement, the conditional rate of probable ICD-11 PGD was 13.0%. Significant risk factors of ICD-11 PGD included the recent loss of a loved one (6 months to a year ago), being most affected by a partner or spouse's death, loved one dying in the war, no recent contact with the deceased prior to their death, and meeting depression and anxiety diagnostic requirements.

CONCLUSION

The study reveals that a significant percentage of Ukrainian bereaved individuals have probable ICD-11 PGD, and identifying risk factors, particularly war-related losses, will aid in the development of intervention and prevention programs for bereaved adults.

Continuing bonds of bereaved Muslims mothers with their young dead child

Based on continuing bonds theory, this research examined the experience and manifestations of continuing bonds of bereaved Muslim mothers with their children who died in home accidents. This qualitative phenomenological study is based on interviews with 15 bereaved mothers (aged 28-46 years) whose children (aged 1-6 years) died 2-7 years before the interviews. Analysis revealed three themes: efforts to continue the physical bonds, challenges in the continuing bonds in cases of traumatic death, and belief in afterlife as the main element of the continuing bonds. The traumatic circumstances of the death challenged the ability to maintain the bond based on positive memories without it being overwhelmed by the traumatic memories of the last moments of the child's life. Religious beliefs played an important role in the characteristics of the bond. Maintaining the bond requires professionals to provide a therapeutic environment where bereaved mothers feel safe talking about it.
