Motor Competence Assessment (MCA) Scoring Method

The Motor Competence Assessment (MCA) is a quantitative test battery that assesses motor competence across the whole lifespan. It is composed of three sub-scales: locomotor, stability, and manipulative, each of them assessed by two different objectively measured tests. The MCA construct validity for children and adolescents, having normative values from 3 to 23 years of age, and the configural invariance between age groups, were recently established. The aim of this study is to expand the MCA’s development and validation by defining the best and leanest method to score and classify MCA sub-scales and total score. One thousand participants from 3 to 22 years of age, randomly selected from the Portuguese database on MC, participated in the study. Three different procedures to calculate the sub-scales and total MCA values were tested according to alternative models. Results were compared to the reference method, and Intraclass Correlation Coefficient, Cronbach’s Alpha, and Bland–Altman statistics were used to describe agreement between the three methods. The analysis showed no substantial differences between the three methods. Reliability values were perfect (0.999 to 1.000) for all models, implying that all the methods were able to classify everyone in the same way. We recommend implementing the most economic and efficient algorithm, i.e., the configural model algorithm, averaging the percentile scores of the two tests to assess each MCA sub-scale and total scores.

Visual system and motor development in children: a systematic review

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to review the available scientific literature on the possible relationship between the visual system and motor development in children.

METHODS

This study was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) statement recommendations. The review protocol is available in PROSPERO (CRD42021245341). Four different databases, namely Scopus, PubMed, CINAHL and Web of Science, were assessed from April 2005 to February 2021. To determine the quality of the articles, we used the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) Quality Appraisal Scale, and a protocol was followed to define the levels of evidence on the basis of the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine Levels of Evidence. The search strategy included terms describing motor development in children and adolescents with visual disorders.

RESULTS

Among the identified studies, 23 were included in the study. All selected articles examined the relationship between the visual system and development in children. The quality of most of the studies was moderate-high, and they were between evidence levels 2 and 4.

CONCLUSIONS

Our systematic review revealed that all included studies established a relationship between the visual system and development in children. However, the methods for measuring the visual system and motor skills lacked uniformity.

Amblyopia is associated with impaired balance in 3–6-year-old children in China

Purpose

School-age children in China have more advanced motor development than their North American counterparts. This is likely due to cultural differences in children’s regular motor activities. It is unknown whether the motor function impairments associated with binocular visual disorders (BVDs) such as amblyopia in children raised in North America exist for children raised in China.

Design

Prospective case-control study.

Methods

A major tertiary eye hospital in China tested children aged 3 to <7 (n = 63) belonging to three groups: anisometropic or strabismic amblyopia (n = 22), anisometropia or strabismus without amblyopia (n = 20), or controls (n = 21). The main outcome measure was motor function scores (Movement Assessment Battery for Children 2nd edition).

Results

Balance scores varied significantly across groups (F_2,61 = 4.2, p = 0.02) with the amblyopia group (mean ± SD: 12.5 ± 3.0) exhibiting significantly poorer scores than controls (14.8 ± 2.3). The no-amblyopia BVD group (12.8 ± 3.1) did not differ significantly from the other groups. Manual dexterity, catching and throwing and total scores did not vary significantly across the three groups. A separate pre-planned comparison of only the amblyopia and control groups revealed significantly poorer total motor scores in the amblyopia group (10.1 ± 3.2) vs. controls (12 ± 2.4). A linear regression model was unable to significantly predict associations between total motor score and binocular function score (standardized β = −0.09, 95%, p = 0.7), amblyopia etiology (standardized β = 0.14, 95%, p = 0.4), or inter-ocular acuity difference (standardized β = −0.18, 95%, p = 0.4), in the amblyopia group.

Conclusion

Amblyopia is associated with motor function impairment in children raised in China. Motor deficits that may impact everyday activities have been observed in patients with amblyopia across multiple cultures.

Adverse Influences of Nonstrabismic Amblyopia on Quality of Life of Teenagers in China

The aim of this study was to explore the influences of nonstrabismic amblyopia on quality of life in adolescents. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) scale, a multidimensional construct that indicates a fundamental health outcome, was used to measure physical and psychosocial functioning of the adolescents. Forty teenagers with nonstrabismic amblyopia and 40 control teenagers without nonstrabismic amblyopia were recruited between April 2019 and July 2021. The anthropometric measures, body image, physical activity outcome, and HRQoL scores including physical health, emotional functioning, social functioning, and school functioning were compared between the two groups. The results revealed that teenagers with nonstrabismic amblyopia had less weekly sedentary time (P < 0.001), weekly total steps (P < 0.001), and worse school functioning (P = 0.0211) than control teenagers. No significant difference was found in anthropometric measures and body image between the two groups (P > 0.05). This study implied the needs for teenagers with nonstrabismic amblyopia to enhance physical activities. Teachers and parents are encouraged to pay more attention to teenagers with nonstrabismic amblyopia to improve their school functioning.
