The effects of aerobic exercise on corpus callosum integrity: systematic review

Objective: To evaluate the influence of exercise on the body and genu of the corpus callosum (CC), which is a critical brain structure involved in facilitating interhemispheric communication. Methods: Studies were identified using electronic databases, including PubMed, PsychInfo, Sports Discus and Google Scholar. The search terms, including their combinations, included exercise, physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness, interhemispheric, and corpus callosum. To be eligible for inclusion in this review, studies had to be published in English; employ a cross-sectional, prospective or experimental design; include a measure of exercise as the independent variable; and the outcome variable had to include an integrity, volumetric or functional measure of the CC. Extraction parameters include study design, study population, exercise protocol, CC assessment, main findings regarding the relationship between exercise and the CC, and the evaluated or speculated mechanisms of this relationship. Results: 20 articles met the study inclusion criteria. Among these, 5 were conducted in animals and 15 were conducted in humans. Among the 5 animal studies, all provided suggestive evidence associating aerobic exercise with increased white matter integrity. Among the 15 human studies, 6 studies employed tract-based special statistics (TBSS), 4 utilized regions of interest (ROI) approach and 5 executed whole brain voxel wise analysis. Changes in the body was detected by 5 out of 6 TBSS studies and the genu by 3. Out of 4 ROI studies, three detected changes in the genu, but only one did in the body (out of 3 studies). One whole brain voxelwise study detected changes in the CC body of old adults and two found changes in the genu. Conclusion: This review provides evidence to suggest that aerobic exercise, and in turn, enhanced cardiorespiratory fitness, are associated with structural and functional outcomes increasing CC integrity.

Motor behavior-induced prefrontal cortex activation and episodic memory function

BACKGROUND

The objective of this paper was to evaluate the potential individual and combined effects of acute exercise coupled with bilateral interhemispheric activation on episodic memory function. Six experiments were conducted.

METHODS

Experiment 1 was a within-subject, counterbalanced experiment. Participants completed four visits, including 1) exercise and saccadic eye movements, 2) exercise only, 3) saccadic eye movements only, and 4) no exercise and no saccadic eye movements (control). A word-list memory assessment was employed, including a long-term (20-min delay) memory evaluation. In Experiment 2, we evaluated the effects of saccadic eye movements on prefrontal cortex oxygenation, a proxy for neuronal activity. Similarly, in our third experiment, we evaluated the effects of acute exercise on prefrontal cortex oxygenation. Thus, experiments 2 and 3 were employed to provide mechanistic insights from the results shown in experiment 1. Experiment 4 replicated Experiment 1, but instead of increasing prefrontal cortex activation via saccadic eye movements, we used a fist clenching protocol. Experiment 5 evaluated the effects of fist clenching on prefrontal cortex oxygenation.

RESULTS

Collectively, these 5 experimental studies showed that acute exercise (Experiment 1), saccadic eye movements (Experiment 1), and fist clenching (Experiment 4) enhanced memory function, and that acute exercise (Experiment 3), saccadic eye movements (Experiment 2) and fist clenching (Experiment 5) all increased prefrontal cortex oxygenation. Experiment 6 demonstrated that prefrontal cortex oxygenation was positively associated with episodic memory function.

CONCLUSION

These six experiments suggest that several behaviors, such as acute exercise, saccadic eye movements and fist clenching may improve memory function and may, potentially, do so via increases in prefrontal cortex oxygenation.

Effects of Exercise on Long-Term Potentiation in Neuropsychiatric Disorders

Various neuropsychiatric conditions, such as depression, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease, demonstrate evidence of impaired long-term potentiation, a cellular correlate of episodic memory function. This chapter discusses the mechanistic effects of these neuropsychiatric conditions on long-term potentiation and how exercise may help to attenuate these detrimental effects.

Oxygenation of the Prefrontal Cortex during Memory Interference

BACKGROUND

Memory interference occurs when information (or memory) to be retrieved is interrupted by competing stimuli. Proactive interference (PI) occurs when previously acquired information interferes with newly acquired information, whereas retroactive interference (RI) occurs when newly acquired information interferes with previously acquired information. In animal paradigms, the prefrontal cortex (PFC) has been shown to help facilitate pattern separation, and ultimately, attenuate memory interference. Research evaluating the role of the PFC on memory interference among humans is, however, limited. The present study evaluated the relationship between PFC oxygenation on memory interference among humans, with the null hypothesis being that there is no association between PFC oxygenation and memory interference.

METHODS

A total of 74 participants (M_age = 20.8 years) completed the study. Participants completed a computerized memory interference task using the AB-DE AC-FG paradigm, with PFC oxyhemoglobin levels measured via functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

RESULTS

For PI, the change in oxygenated hemoglobin for encoding list 1 and retrieval of list 1 showed moderate evidence for the null hypothesis (BF₀₁ = 4.05 and 3.28, respectively). For RI, the Bayesian analysis also established moderate evidence for the null hypothesis across all memory task time points.

CONCLUSION

Our study demonstrates evidence of the null hypothesis regarding the relationship between PFC oxygenation and memory interference. Future work should continue to investigate this topic to identify mechanistic correlates of memory interference.

Handedness, Grip Strength, and Memory Function: Considerations by Biological Sex

Background and Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential independent and interactive effects of handedness and grip strength on episodic memory function, and whether biological sex moderated these relationships. Materials and Methods: 162 young adults (Mage = 20.7 years) completed a series of memory assessments including a subjective memory complaint evaluation and several objective measures of memory. Handedness (i.e., left-hand dominant, inconsistent handedness (ICH), and right-hand dominant) was evaluated using the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory. Handgrip strength was determined from a handgrip dynamometer. Results: When compared to ICH individuals, retrospective memory scores were statistically significantly worse for left-handed (p = 0.02) and right-handed (p = 0.03) individuals. Higher grip strength was statistically significantly associated with fewer retrospective memory complaints (b = 0.10, 95% CI: 0.01, 0.19, p = 0.04). Conclusions: The present study provides some suggestive evidence that ICH (inconsistent handedness) and greater grip strength are associated with fewer retrospective memory complaints. However, we did not observe any evidence of an interaction effect of handedness and grip strength on memory, and similarly, biological sex did not interact with these parameters to influence memory.
