The Relationship Between Acceptance, Biopsychosocial Factors, and Quality of Life: A Structural Equation Model

Disability acceptance is one of the most significant constructs in the psychosocial adaptation process. Although prior research has examined the relationship among different biopsychosocial factors, disability acceptance, and quality of life (QoL), limited study focused on entering a series of biopsychosocial factors simultaneously into analysis to reflect live experience of individuals with disabilities. This study aimed to examine the role of acceptance regarding the relationship between a series of biopsychosocial factors (i.e., general health, physical functioning, pain, anxiety, depression, stress, loneliness, stigma, sense of community, and neighborhood problems) and QoL based on Livneh’s psychosocial adaptation model to inform psychosocial interventions. A total of 430 participants with disabilities completed an online survey consisting of instruments measuring target variables. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses indicated a three-factor structure for selected biopsychosocial factors (i.e., psychological difficulties, physical status, and community issues). Structural equation modeling results showed that the proposed model indicated a fair model fit after respecification. Effect analyses showed that disability acceptance directly affected QoL and partially mediated the relationship between physical status and QoL and psychological difficulties and QoL. In addition, loneliness has been found to significantly and directly predict QoL in the respecified model. The model demonstrated that disability acceptance and loneliness have a significant impact on QoL.

Involvement in Sexaholics Anonymous and life satisfaction: The mediating role of meaning in life and hope

Background and aims

Some people are preoccupied with their sexual urges and fantasies and lose control over their sexual behaviors, which can cause adverse consequences for their health and well-being. One of the options available for individuals seeking treatment for compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) is a self-help group based on the twelve-step program. The main purpose of the current study was to examine the direct and indirect (through meaning in life and hope) relationships between involvement in Sexaholics Anonymous (SA) and life satisfaction.

Methods

The sample consisted of 80 Polish members of SA (72 men and 8 women) with a mean age of 38.96 years (SD = 10.56). The Sex Addiction Screening Test-Revised, the Meaning of Life Questionnaire, the Herth Hope Index, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, and items adapted from the Alcoholics Anonymous Involvement Scale were used to measure the study variables.

Results

Path analysis showed a direct positive relationship between SA involvement and life satisfaction. Moreover, the relationship between these variables was mediated by the presence of meaning in life and hope. Simultaneously, more severe symptoms of CSBD were related to lower levels of the presence of meaning in life and higher levels of the search for meaning in life, which, in turn, predicted lower levels of life satisfaction.

Discussion and conclusions

The results suggest that finding meaning in life and restoring hope partly underlie the relationship between SA involvement and life satisfaction.

The impact of employment on quality of life for adults with brain injury

BACKGROUND: Employment is associated with greater quality of life (QOL) for people with disabilities. Yet, for individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI), the benefits of work are not often realized given high rates of unemployment. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the unique impact of psychosocial variables and employment status (working vs. not working) on self-reported QOL among adults with TBI. METHODS: Participants included 116 adults with TBI between the ages of 18-65, recruited through state brain injury associations in the United States to complete an anonymous online survey. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to examine the incremental impact of psychosocial variables (sense of community, social support, social network, and problem-solving confidence) and employment status on QOL controlling for age and symptom severity. RESULTS: In the final model, employment status, informal and formal support network ties, problem-solving confidence, sense of community, and emotional support explained 59% of the variance in QOL, which is considered a large effect size. Employment status uniquely explained 5% of the variance in QOL. CONCLUSIONS: Findings support the positive benefits of work for adults with TBI. Rehabilitation services that emphasize vocational considerations and employment supports are needed to impact work status and ultimately QOL for individuals with TBI.

How Far Have we Come? An Integrative Review of the Current Literature on Sense of Community and Well-being

Sense of community and well-being are considered core tenets in the field of community psychology, acting as focal points for theory, research, and action. This integrative review synthesizes the empirical literature on sense of community and well-being with respect to four research questions focused on the relationships between these variables, the methodologies used to study those relationships, and how future research might expand upon the current literature. A search of the available literature produced 30 articles that met the search criteria, based primarily on conceptualizations and measurement of both sense of community and hedonic and eudaimonic well-being. This review suggests a general consensus across the literature of a positive relationship between sense of community and well-being among both youth and adults in a variety of settings, and discusses the strengths and limitations of this area of research, pointing to the need for more nuanced, ecologically valid research that incorporates more qualitative and critical methodologies. We hope that this review can promote a more thorough understanding of how sense of community and individual well-being relate to each other, and that ongoing research in this area can be a catalyst for action research and interventions that are applied to pressing contemporary issues as well as strengths-based approaches focused on how to foster and support the well-being of individuals within their community contexts.
