Analyzing Children's Perception of Violence Through Their Writing

Direct exposure to violence affects approximately three out of every five children in America. Using data available from the "Do the Write Thing" (DtWT) Challenge, this study explored children's views of violence using 1,165 essays written by students from 13 middle schools in nine districts within Region V of Texas. Data analysis from students' writing found that students wrote more about bullying than other forms of violence. Most children identified themselves as indirect observers or witnesses rather than victims or perpetrators during such instances of bullying. Pairing the anti-bullying campaigns with violence prevention programs could better inform and educate students about the risks and consequences of violence, particularly as they move into late adolescence and adulthood.

The moderating effect of Machiavellianism on the relationships between bullying, peer acceptance, and school adjustment in adolescents

This study examined the moderating effect of Machiavellianism on the relationships between bullying, peer acceptance, and school adjustment (rule-following behavior and academic performance) among 216 middle school 7th-graders in Taipei, Taiwan. The participants were divided into two groups according to their Machiavellianism. Multi-group path analysis showed that for those who were low in Machiavellianism condition, physical and verbal bullying was negatively linked to peer acceptance and academic performance while no significant association was found for the high-Machiavellianism group. Bullying was negatively, yet non-significantly, associated with rule-following behavior for both groups. The results largely supported the buffering effect of Machiavellianism on the negative outcomes of bullying. Implications for school-violence prevention and for research on adaptive bullies are discussed.

Who is The Fairest One of All? How Evolution Guides Peer and Media Influences on Female Body Dissatisfaction

Much attention has focused on the influence of media images of thin women on body dissatisfaction among female viewers. Disagreement exists regarding the nature of media influences, with meta-analytic results suggesting only small effect sizes. Fewer researchers have focused on the role of peer influences and peer competition on female body dissatisfaction. Furthermore, the relation between body dissatisfaction and eating disorders may be more complex than is often implied in the media effects literature. Links between body dissatisfaction and eating disorders may be overstated, and some eating disorders, primarily anorexia nervosa, may not always be motivated primarily by body dissatisfaction. The current paper discusses these issues from an evolutionary perspective, examining how sociocultural forces influence the intensity of female competition and how such competition effects body dissatisfaction.

Cyber bullying behaviors among middle and high school students

Little research has been conducted that comprehensively examines cyber bullying with a large and diverse sample. The present study examines the prevalence, impact, and differential experience of cyber bullying among a large and diverse sample of middle and high school students (N = 2,186) from a large urban center. The survey examined technology use, cyber bullying behaviors, and the psychosocial impact of bullying and being bullied. About half (49.5%) of students indicated they had been bullied online and 33.7% indicated they had bullied others online. Most bullying was perpetrated by and to friends and participants generally did not tell anyone about the bullying. Participants reported feeling angry, sad, and depressed after being bullied online. Participants bullied others online because it made them feel as though they were funny, popular, and powerful, although many indicated feeling guilty afterward. Greater attention is required to understand and reduce cyber bullying within children's social worlds and with the support of educators and parents.

Some of My Best Friends——Experiences of Bullying Within Friendships

This study provides one of the first assessments of bullying among friends based on the perceptions of victimized children and their parents and teachers, with respect to actual situations that they raised for discussion. The qualitative methodology privileges the `lived experience' of study participants. Interviews were conducted with children in 4th and 5th grades who self-identified as victimized, and with their parents and teachers. Bullying by a child considered a friend can be particularly confusing. It can be difficult for the child to recognize that a friend is bullying and for parents and teachers to identify these interactions as bullying. Themes that emerged included the child's awareness of being bullied by friends; the adults' awareness that the child was bullied by friends; impact on the friendship and differentiating bullying from conflict in friendship. This exploratory research suggests that bullying among friends is an important issue that demands further investigation.
