Classroom-based interdependent group contingencies increase children's physical activity

This study investigated the effects of 2 interdependent group contingencies (individual vs. cumulative classroom goal setting) on the number of pedometer-recorded steps taken per day. Thirty third-grade students in 2 classrooms participated. An ABACX design was conducted in which the X phase referred to a replication of the most successful phase (i.e., B or C). Results indicated that individual goal setting, rather than cumulative classroom goal setting, was more effective in increasing the number of steps taken per day on average. Results suggest that individual feedback may be an important factor in attaining desired results.

Examining Parents' Preferences for Group and Individual Parent Training for Children with ADHD Symptoms

Parent training (PT) programs have been found to reduce some behavioral impairment associated with children's attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as well as improve parenting competence, but poor uptake and participation by parents are formidable barriers that affect service effectiveness. We used a discrete-choice experiment (DCE) to examine how parent preferences for treatment format (i.e., group vs. individual) might influence their participation in PT. Participants were 445 parents seeking mental health services for children with elevated symptoms of ADHD in Ontario, Canada. Parents completed a DCE composed of 30 choice tasks used to gauge PT format preference. Results showed that 58.7% of parents preferred individual PT; these parents were most interested in interventions that would make them feel more informed about their child's problems and in understanding-as opposed to solving-their child's problems. A minority of parents (19.4%) preferred group PT; these parents were most interested in active, skill-building services that would help them solve their child's problems. About one fifth of parents (21.9%) preferred the Minimal Information alternative (i.e., receiving neither individual or group PT); these parents reported the highest levels of depression and the most severe mental health problems in their child. Results highlight the importance of considering parent preferences for format and suggest that alternative formats to standard PT should be considered for multiply stressed families.

Group Contingency Interventions With Children—1980-2010

The present study sought to evaluate the efficacy of group contingency procedures via meta-analysis. A total of 182 studies published between 1980 and 2010 were identified via PsychInfo that included group contingency as a keyword. Studies that met inclusion criteria (e.g., single-subject design, school-aged children; N = 50), were coded and effect sizes were calculated. Results strongly support the efficacy of group contingencies with an overall effect size of 3.41. Types of group contingencies were also evaluated for dependent group contingencies (ES = 3.75, n = 11), independent group contingencies (ES = 3.27, n = 8), and interdependent group contingencies (ES = 2.88, n = 35). These results clearly establish all varieties of group contingencies as efficacious for a wide range of target behaviors with school-aged children. Results are discussed with regard to practical implications.

School-based interventions for students with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder

Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder typically manifest impairments in multiple settings. Perhaps the most common reason for referral relates to the school impairments experienced by these children. A wide range of intervention strategies have been developed for these children to improve attention and behavior, enhance academic competence, and promote social competence. A strong majority of the research on nonpharmacologic interventions has focused on strategies to improve attention and behavior. More recently, strategies specifically designed to promote the academic and social competence of these children are being developed. Also, most of the research has focused on elementary school-age children, but evidence-based strategies for intervening with preschoolers and adolescents are beginning to emerge.
