The Effect of Combination of Video Feedback and Audience Feedback on Social Anxiety: Preliminary Findings

The Impact of Group Feedback on Self-Perceptions Following Videotape Exposure in CBT for Social Anxiety Disorder

Video feedback following social anxiety exposures improves self-perceptions. Clinical studies have not examined whether feedback from group members has incremental benefit beyond that of viewing the tape itself. Sixty-seven individuals with social anxiety disorder completed videotaped exposure during group based cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). After participants viewed their taped exposure, group members and therapists gave feedback. Participants completed ratings of anxiety and performance before and after taping their exposure, after viewing the video themselves, and after receiving group feedback. Appraisal of social concerns were assessed after taping, viewing, and group feedback. There were significant improvements in anxiety, performance, and decreased social concerns across time points. Comparing only the time points of after viewing and after receiving group feedback, the same pattern emerged for anxiety, performance, and appraisal of social concerns, with moderate to large effect sizes. Group feedback led to ratings that exceeded their own initial evaluation of their video. Video feedback in group CBT that also includes feedback from others may improve clinical outcomes.

Avaliação da Ansiedade de Estudantes de Psicologia em Situações Experimentais de Falar em Público

Resumo Durante o percurso no ensino superior, os universitários se deparam com diversas atividades acadêmicas de falar em público (como, por exemplo, apresentações de seminários), que podem ser fortes causadores de ansiedade e afetos negativos, implicando prejuízos significativos para o rendimento acadêmico dos alunos e seus respectivos contextos sociais. Objetivou-se comparar grupos com e sem plateia em relação ao grau de ansiedade vivenciada frente a uma situação experimental de falar em público. Participaram 72 estudantes de psicologia, que foram submetidos ao Teste de Simulação de Falar em Público e responderam ao Inventário de Ansiedade de Beck, Inventário de Habilidades Sociais, Escala de Auto-Avaliação ao Falar em Público e Questionário Sociodemográfico e Ocupacional. Verificou-se que o grupo com plateia apresentou uma redução significativa do nível de ansiedade geral, subjetiva e autonômica após o discurso. Além disso, constatou-se que quanto mais elaborado o repertório de habilidades sociais gerais e de falar em público de um universitário e mais positivas as autoavaliações frente a essa tarefa, menor foi o grau de ansiedade experimentado nessa situação. Sugerem-se novas pesquisas com maior número de universitários, provenientes de diferentes cursos universitários, que permitam examinar as associações entre habilidades sociais, autoavaliações ao falar em público e ansiedade social.

Negative verbal self-relevant feedback is recognized with greater accuracy than facial feedback regardless of depression or social anxiety

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Self-referent information is critical for navigating the social realm, as we constantly use both verbal and non-verbal feedback in our interactions to understand ourselves and the world. In non-clinical samples, a memory bias for positive self-referent information has been observed, while a negativity bias has been observed among those with depression and anxiety. While research suggests that visual and auditory information is processed differently, no study has yet examined if memory biases persist for self-referent information presented by either means. We examined differences in memory for self-relevant social information presented as verbal or facial feedback, and whether symptoms of depression or anxiety influence memory for such information. We predicted that participants would remember more positive feedback overall, and that depression and anxiety would be positively related to memory for negative items.

METHODS

Participants gave a speech, and were provided with positive and negative feedback via facial expressions, (n = 25) or verbal feedback presented aurally (n = 26). Participants then did a recognition test for the feedback they recieved.

RESULTS

Recognition was higher for negative compared to positive feedback in the verbal condition, regardless of depression or anxiety. No memory biases were observed in the facial feedback condition.

LIMITATIONS

No neutral stimuli was presented.

CONCLUSIONS

Findings suggest that the type of social feedback one receives may influence how information is remembered, regardless of symptomatology. Future studies should examine the mechanisms by which memory biases exist for different types of self-relevant feedback.

Combined Audience and Video Feedback With Cognitive Review Improves State Anxiety and Self-Perceptions During Speech Tasks in Socially Anxious Individuals

This study investigated the effects of combined audience feedback with video feedback plus cognitive preparation, and cognitive review (enabling deeper processing of feedback) on state anxiety and self-perceptions including perception of performance and perceived probability of negative evaluation in socially anxious individuals during a speech performance. One hundred and forty socially anxious students were randomly assigned to four conditions: Cognitive Preparation + Video Feedback + Audience Feedback + Cognitive Review (CP+VF+AF+CR), Cognitive Preparation + Video Feedback + Cognitive Review (CP+VF+CR), Cognitive Preparation + Video Feedback only (CP+VF), and Control. They were asked to deliver two impromptu speeches that were evaluated by confederates. Participants' levels of anxiety and self-perceptions pertaining to the speech task were assessed before and after feedback, and after the second speech. Compared to participants in the other conditions, participants in the CP+VF+AF+CR condition reported a significant decrease in their state anxiety and perceived probability of negative evaluation scores, and a significant increase in their positive perception of speech performance from before to after the feedback. These effects generalized to the second speech. Our results suggest that adding audience feedback to video feedback plus cognitive preparation and cognitive review may improve the effects of existing video feedback procedures in reducing anxiety symptoms and distorted self-representations in socially anxious individuals.
