Removal of Cyanoacrylate Glue From the External Auditory Canal With Hydrogen Peroxide and Acetic Acid: A Case Report

Ear canal foreign bodies are commonly encountered in the field of otolaryngology. This is especially common in the pediatric otolaryngology discipline. As a foreign body, cyanoacrylate glue (also called "super glue") can be difficult to remove and cause significant patient distress. Multiple solvents can be described as aiding in removing such foreign bodies. Here, a case is described in which hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid were used sequentially to remove cyanoacrylate glue from the external auditory canal. We describe a technique allowing en bloc removal of the cyanoacrylate glue. Thankfully, the patient's hearing returned to baseline post-operatively with minimal complications. Overall, cyanoacrylate glue can be a very difficult foreign body to remove from the ear canal. In this case, the sequential use of hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid to soak the glue was a safe and successful method to facilitate glue removal from the ear canal.

Inadvertent tissue adhesive tarsorrhaphy of the eyelid: a review and exploratory trial of removal methods of Histoacryl

OBJECTIVE

The use of tissue adhesives has become a popular option for closure of wounds in the ED. There have been a growing number of reports of inadvertent tissue adhesive injuries including closure of the eyelids. We aim to identify and compare various removal methods of tissue adhesives described in the literature in an exploratory trial.

METHODS

A review was first conducted to establish all published methods for the removal of medical-grade tissue adhesives as well as commercial cyanoacrylates. This search was conducted on PubMed, Google Scholar and Google. All articles that reported attempts at removal of cyanoacrylate glues were included. These methods were then tested on a porcine model in an exploratory trial. Incisions were made on pigskin and closed with Histoacryl, a tissue adhesive. Three removal methods were tested-gentle rubbing with test compound after 45 or 90 s, as well as soaking in test compound. Removal methods that were successful underwent repeat testing.

RESULTS

A total of 37 sources were reviewed with 13 different removal methods suggested. Based on the information, we tested 24 different compounds. Soaking of Histoacryl-closed wounds in Polydexa ear/eye drops displayed consistent success in achieving complete separation of incision edges after 2 hours. Several other soapy substances and antibiotic ointments showed potential but were not as consistent.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, in our trial of removal methods of Histoacryl, soaking in Polydexa antibiotic drops consistently facilitated removal after 2 hours. This approach can be attempted after inadvertent Histoacryl injury.

Deliberate self-harming application of superglue in the nose: case report and literature review

BACKGROUND

Accidental and non-accidental applications of superglue in the ear, nose and oral cavity have been reported previously. Surgical removal of glue from the nose is the current practice.

CASE REPORT

This paper reports the case of an 18-year-old female, who presented with complete bilateral nasal occlusion due to deliberate self-application of superglue in both nostrils to avoid nasogastric tube insertion.

RESULTS

Removal of glue was accomplished with a combination of local anaesthetic cream and acetone-soaked cotton buds, which caused only minimal discomfort to the patient. All traces of glue disappeared within 10 days, without causing damage to the nasal mucosa, nasal blockage or pain.

CONCLUSION

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of deliberate self-application of superglue in the nose. A successful non-surgical management option for the removal of glue from the nose is introduced.
