Adverse childhood experiences and self-esteem among adolescents: The role of social capital and gender

INTRODUCTION

Adverse childhood experiences have long-lasting effects on the self-esteem of adolescents. However, the extrinsic mechanism linking them to self-esteem, which is more modifiable, has rarely been examined. Therefore, this study examined the mediating roles of family, school, and peer social capital and the moderating role of gender in the association between adverse childhood experiences and adolescent self-esteem.

METHODS

This study involved a cross-sectional survey of first- and second-grade students in the only high school in Wusu, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. Data were collected in May 2023. A sample of 2539 students (M = 16.84 years old; 55.65% female) was included. The measurement models of family, school, and peer social capital were constructed using confirmatory factor analysis. The mediating roles of the three types of social capital and the moderating role of gender were examined using mediation analysis and multiple-group analysis, respectively.

RESULTS

Family, school, and peer social capital significantly mediated the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and adolescent self-esteem, and family social capital played the strongest role. Gender significantly moderated the direct effect of adverse childhood experiences on self-esteem. The direct effect was significant only among girls.

CONCLUSIONS

This study underscores the protective role of social capital for self-esteem among adolescents in Northwestern China and similar areas with relatively limited social services. Comprehensive interventions promoting social capital, especially family social capital, should be conducted to enhance self-esteem among adolescents.

Psychometric properties of the translated Spanish version of the Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire

Introduction

Some patients with rotator cuff injuries do not report significant changes in pain-related outcomes. Pain self-efficacy, which is commonly assessed using the Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire, may contribute toward this outcome. However, a Spanish adaptation of this questionnaire is currently lacking. Therefore, this study's purpose was developing the Spanish version of this questionnaire, and assess its psychometric properties.

Methods

The Spanish version of the Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire was translated and culturally adapted, and a sample of 107 patients with rotator cuff injuries completed the questionnaire to examine its convergent validity (analyzing its correlation with the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia), its test-retest reliability, for which a subset of 40 participants completed again the questionnaire, and its internal consistency.

Results

Translation was conducted without any problems, and 107 participants completed the study. Mean scores for the Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire were 45.2 points (standard deviation, 11.4). The Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire showed a moderate negative correlation with the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (Pearson's correlation index r = -0.48) supporting its convergent validity. High test-retest reliability (Intraclass Correlation Coefficient of 0.90) and excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's α value of 0.92) were also found.

Discussion

The Spanish version of the Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire presents high validity, test-retest reliability, and internal consistency to assess pain self-efficacy in patients suffering rotator cuff injuries in Spanish-speaking settings.

Cross-cultural adaptation, reliability, and validity of the pain self-efficacy questionnaire - Hebrew version

PURPOSE

This study aims to translate, culturally adapt, and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Hebrew Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (PSEQ).

METHODS

The study was designed according to the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) recommendations for patient-reported outcome measurement instruments. The PSEQ was initially translated into Hebrew and cross-culturally adapted. The Hebrew version of the PSEQ (PSEQ-H) was administered to participants suffering from chronic musculoskeletal pain, along with other self-report measures of pain (NPRS, FABQ, HADS, PCS, and SF-12). Eight hypotheses on expected correlations of the PSEQ-H with other instruments were formulated a priori to assess construct validity. Structural validity was assessed using confirmatory factor analysis. Floor and ceiling effects, test-retest, and internal consistency reliability were also assessed.

RESULTS

The translation process retained the unidimensional model of the PSEQ. The PSEQ-H demonstrates excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.97) and test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.88), and no significant floor and ceiling effects were observed. Construct validity was found satisfactory as 75% (six) of the analyses between the PSEQ-H and the other self-reported measures met the hypotheses. Factor analysis confirmed the single-factor structure of the questionnaire.

CONCLUSIONS

The PSEQ-H version was found to have excellent reliability, good construct, and structural validity, and can be used with heterogeneous chronic musculoskeletal pain populations. Future studies should test the PSEQ-H's responsiveness and psychometric properties with specific pain populations.

Reliability, validity, and responsiveness of a Canadian French adaptation of the pain self-efficacy questionnaire (PSEQ)

PURPOSE

The objectives of this study were to translate the Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (PSEQ) into Canadian French (PSEQ-F) and to evaluate its validity, reliability and responsiveness in a French-Canadian sample of patients with persistent rotator cuff related shoulder pain (RCRSP).

METHODS

Translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the original English version of the PSEQ into Canadian French were performed according to standard procedures. Thereafter, 78 adults with RCRSP completed the PSEQ-F on three occasions: baseline, 2 days later to evaluate the reliability and 6 weeks later to evaluate responsiveness.

RESULTS

Cross-cultural adaptation was performed without problems with content or language. The PSEQ-F was found to be reliable (Intraclass Correlation Coefficient = 0.96; Minimal Detectable Change = 3 points [5%]), valid (moderate correlations with an abbreviated version of Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand [QuickDASH] and Brief Pain Inventory [BPI] Questionnaires) and responsive (Standardized Response Mean = 0.96; Effect Size = 0.81; Minimal Clinically Important Difference = 6 points [10%]).

CONCLUSION

The PSEQ-F is a reliable, valid and responsive questionnaire that can be used to assess pain self-efficacy in French-speaking individuals with RCRSP. Electronic Health Literacy in Individuals with Chronic Pain and Its Association with Psychological Function

Electronic health literacy skills and competences are important for empowering people to have an active role in making appropriate health care decisions. The aims of this cross-sectional study were to (1) examine the frequency of use of the Internet for seeking online information about chronic pain, (2) determine the level of eHealth literacy skills in the study sample, (3) identify the factors most closely associated with higher levels of eHealth literacy, and (4) examine self-efficacy as a potential mediator of the association between eHealth literacy and measures of pain and function in a sample of adults with chronic pain. One-hundred and sixty-one adults with chronic pain completed measures assessing internet use, eHealth literacy, pain interference, anxiety, depression, and pain-related self-efficacy. Results indicated that 70% of the participants are active users of the Internet for seeking information related to their health. The level of eHealth literacy skills was not statistically significantly associated with participants’ age or pain interference but was significantly negatively associated with both anxiety and depression. In addition, the findings showed that self-efficacy fully explained the relationship between eHealth literacy and depression and partially explained the relationship between eHealth literacy and anxiety. Self-efficacy should be considered as a treatment target in eHealth literacy interventions, due to its role in explaining the potential benefits of eHealth literacy.

Measurement properties of the Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire in populations with musculoskeletal disorders: a systematic review

A higher level of pain self-efficacy has been suggested as a predictor of a better outcome in patients with musculoskeletal disorders. The Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (PSEQ) is one of the most frequently used patient-reported outcome measures for pain self-efficacy. The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review that would identify, appraise, and synthetize the psychometric properties of the PSEQ. Embase, MEDLINE, and CINAHL databases were searched for publications reporting on psychometric properties of the PSEQ in populations with musculoskeletal disorders. After applying selection criteria on identified citations, 28 studies (9853 participants) were included. The methodological quality as measured with the COSMIN risk of bias tool varied from adequate to very good for most measurement properties. The results showed a weighted mean intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.86 (range: 0.75-0.93) for test-retest reliability for the original 10-item PSEQ and the minimal detectable change at 95% confidence interval was 11.52 out of 60 points. Effect size and standardized response mean values were 0.53 and 0.63, respectively, whereas the minimal clinically important difference ranged from 5.5 to 8.5 in patients with chronic low back pain. Internal consistency (Cronbach alpha) ranged from 0.79 to 0.95. The results also showed that the PSEQ has low to moderate correlations with measures of quality of life, disability, pain, pain interference, anxiety, depression, and catastrophizing. Finally, the PSEQ has been adapted and validated in 14 languages. Overall, the results demonstrate that the PSEQ has excellent validity, reliability, and responsiveness. Further high-quality studies are needed to determine responsiveness in populations other than chronic low back pain.

The relationship among factors of organizational justice, organizational citizenship behavior, job satisfaction, and ease of work among Japanese nurses

AIM

This work is aimed to create a strategy to improve the nurses' working environment.

BACKGROUND

As the working-age population is expected to decline in Japan, the maintenance of the nurse workforce is important. In order to create a strategy to improve the nurses' working environment, we studied the relationship among factors of organizational justice (procedural, distributive, and interactional justices), organizational citizenship behavior, job satisfaction, and ease of work.

METHODS

A cross-sectional, self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 969 nurses and 322 effective responses were analyzed (effective response rate 33.2%). The questionnaire contained demographic information, ease of work, and three scales for organizational justice, organizational citizenship behavior, and job satisfaction. The factor structure of the scales was studied using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Structural equation modeling was used to investigate the relationship among measurements. The protocol was approved by the ethical committee of the author's university.

RESULTS

The final model showed a fair fit to the data (χ² = 1803.15, df = 1014, p < 0.001, comparative fit index = 0.907, root mean square error of approximation = 0.049). Interactional justice showed the most significant correlation to job satisfaction (r = 0.590). Job satisfaction and ease of work also showed a significant positive correlation (r = 0.696). Distributive justice had a slight negative indirect effect on job satisfaction, whereas procedural justice had no significant effect.

CONCLUSION

In order to enhance job satisfaction/ease of work among Japanese nurses, improvement of interactional justice may be the best strategy.

Validation of the Yoruba Version of the Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire in Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain

Cultural adaptation and psychometric analysis.

OBJECTIVE

This study determined the test-retest reliability, acceptability, internal consistency, divergent validity of the Yoruba pain self-efficacy questionnaire (PSEQ-Y). It also examined the ceiling and floor effects and the small detectable change (SDC) of the PSEQ-Y among patients with chronic low back pain (LBP).

SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA

There are various indigenous language translations of the PSEQ and none adapted to African language. However, translations of the PSEQ into Nigerian languages are not readily available.

METHODS

The validity testing phase of the study involved 131 patients with LBP, while 83 patients with LBP took part in the reliability phase. Following the Beaton recommendation for cultural adaptation of instruments, the PSEQ was adapted into the Yoruba language. The psychometric properties of the PSEQ-Y determined comprised: internal consistency, divergent validity, test-retest reliability, and SDC.

RESULTS

The mean age of the participants was 52.96 ± 17.3 years. The PSEQ-Y did not correlate with the Yoruba version of Visual Analogue Scale (VAS-Y) scores (r = -0.05; P = 0.59). The values for the internal consistency and the test-retest reliability of the PSEQ-Y were 0.79 and 0.86, with the 95% confidence interval of the test-retest reliability ranging between 0.82 and 0.90. The standard error of measurement (SEM) and the SDC of the PSEQ-Y were 1.2 and 3.3, respectively. The PSEQ-Y had no floor or ceiling effect, as none of the respondents scored either the minimal or maximal scores.

CONCLUSION

This is the first study in Nigeria to culturally adapt PSEQ. The PSEQ-Y showed adequate psychometric properties similar to existing versions. Therefore, the tool can be used to assess pain self-efficacy in clinical and research settings and help to improve the health outcomes of patients chronic LBP.Level of Evidence: 3.
