Synthesis of graphene oxide-modified porous chitosan cross-linked polyaniline composite for static and dynamic removal of Cr(VI)

A novel ternary composite was synthesized comprising graphene oxide-modified porous chitosan cross-linked polyaniline (GO@CS-PANI) by improved Hummers method, followed by cross-linking and grafting. The morphological, structural, and electrical properties of the composite were characterized by FESEM, BET, XRD, RAMAN, FTIR spectra, and zeta potential. It was found that the composite shows excellent Cr(VI) removal performance both in static and dynamic adsorption. The optimal adsorption parameters were solution at pH of 2.0, adsorbent dosage of 0.4 g/L, time of 45 min, and temperature of 35 °C. The Langmuir isotherm model was the best-fitted model, indicating homogeneous adsorption with maximum uptake of 539.83 mg/g. Pseudo-second-order was the best-fitted kinetic model, and the rate was controlled by film diffusion. Thermodynamic data demonstrated that the process was spontaneous, endothermic, and feasible. From the dynamic study, it was witnessed that a lower flow rate and a higher bed height were suitable for maximum adsorption performance. The Thomas model was the best-fitted model for data obtained from the dynamic study. Competition from interfering ions showed that anions have little effect on Cr(VI) removal, whereas cations have no such effect. The adsorption mechanism involved electrostatic attraction, π-π interaction, ion exchange, and metal ion complexion. After five cycles of adsorption-desorption study, the composite still removed 76% Cr(VI). These findings of the present study and the reusable nature of GO@CS-PANI composite signify the innovative and excellent adsorbent for wastewater treatment.

Statistical evaluation of liquid phase sequestration of acridine orange and Cr6+ by novel mesoporous glutamic acid-g-polyacrylamide/plaster of paris/riboflavin hydrogel nanocomposite

The adsorption of acridine orange and Cr⁶⁺ ion onto plaster of paris reinforced glutamic acid-grafted-polyacrylamide hydrogel nanocomposite modified with riboflavin, Glu-g-PAM/POP/Rb HNC was studied. The Glu-g-PAM/POP/Rb HNC was physico-chemically characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis. The specific surface area, pore volume and pore diameter were 15.48 m²/g, 0.015 cm³/g and 4.23 nm, respectively. Adsorption process was strategized by response surface methodology (RSM) based on a 3-level 5-factor (initial solution pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, initial adsorbate concentration and temperature) central composite design (CCD), and validity of the estimated parameters was statistically evaluated using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The optimized operating variables were: pH (AO = 10; Cr⁶⁺ = 4.15), contact time (AO = 60 min; Cr⁶⁺ = 59 min), adsorbent dose (0.8 g/L), initial adsorbate concentration (60 mg/L) and temperature (298 K). Isotherm results were coincident with Langmuir isotherm model. The experimental kinetic adsorption data was congruous with pseudo-second order model, with the uptake rate controlled by both intraparticle and liquid film diffusions. The relatively high Langmuir saturation capacity of 202.63 mg AO/g and 143.68 mg Cr⁶⁺/g, supported by the decent recyclability up to four times affirmed the promising performance of the adsorbent. The efficacy of the adsorbent for simultaneous removal of AO and Cr⁶⁺ from bi-component system was assessed. The possible adsorption mechanism mainly involved hydrogen bonding, van der Waals forces, electrostatic and π-π interactions. Adsorption of AO and Cr⁶⁺ onto Glu-g-PAM/POP/Rb HNC was feasible and exothermic as revealed by the thermodynamic parameters. The findings demonstrated superior adsorbent efficacy for the seizure of pollutants, particularly AO and Cr⁶⁺ from aqueous solution.

Adsorption-Desorption Surface Bindings, Kinetics, and Mass Transfer Behavior of Thermally and Chemically Treated Great Millet Husk towards Cr(VI) Removal from Synthetic Wastewater

This study reports the efficacy of adsorbents synthesized by thermal (TT-GMH) and chemical (CT-GMH) modification of great millet husk (GMH) for the treatment of synthetic wastewater containing Cr(VI). The chemical modification of raw GMH was done by concentrated H2SO4 to increase the porosity and heterogeneity on the surface. The comparative investigations of physicochemical properties of synthesized adsorbents were examined by point of zero charge (pHpzc), BET surface area, SEM-EDX, FTIR, and XRD analyses. The results revealed that CT-GMH had around three times higher surface area and more porous structure as compared to TT-GMH. The adsorption experiments were executed in batch mode to examine the impact of parameters governing the adsorption process. For Cr(VI) solution of 25 mg/L, adsorbent dose of 4 g/L, temperature of 25 ${}^{°}\text{C}$ , and shaking speed of 150 RPM, the maximum removal for TT-GMH was attained at pH 1 and contact time 150 min, while for CT-GMH, maximum removal was attained at pH 2 and contact time 120 min. The experimental results fitted to the rate kinetic equations showed that for both TT-GMH and CT-GMH, adsorbents followed the quasi-second-order kinetic model during the adsorption process. Further, results revealed that the adsorption process was endothermic and Sips isotherm model was followed for both TT-GMH and CT-GMH. Based on the Sips isotherm, maximum uptake capacity for TT-GMH and CT-GMH was noted to be 16 and 22.21 mg/g, respectively. Among the tested mass transfer models, liquid film diffusion model was followed during the adsorption process of both the adsorbents. The desorption study revealed that TT-GMH and CT-GMH give 69.45% and 74.48% removal, respectively, up to six cycles.

Biosorption of Cu2+, Pb2+, Cd2+ and their mixture from aqueous solutions by Michelia figo sawdust

The study aimed at investigating copper, lead, and cadmium removal from both single and mixed metal solutions by Michelia figo (Lour.) Spreng. wood sawdust treated with 0.5 mol l⁻¹ NaOH for four hours. In order to evaluate the effects of each factor and interactions between factors on metal ion biosorption, a 2³ factorial experimental design was applied. FTIR results showed that the metal ions would bind to the hydroxyl and carboxyl groups of M. figo wood sawdust biomass. The main effects and interactions of three factors pH (3 and 5), initial metal ion concentration (C₀, 0.157 and 1.574 mmol L⁻¹), and dosage of biomass (D, 4 and 10 g L⁻¹) at two levels were analyzed. The most significant variable regarding Cu²⁺ and Pb²⁺ biosorption was initial metal iron concentration. For Cd²⁺, pH was found to be the most significant factor. The maximum removal efficiencies were 94.12 and 100% for Cu²⁺ and Cd²⁺, respectively, at conditions of (+ 1, − 1, + 1): pH 5, initial metal concentration 0.157 mmol L⁻¹ and dosage of biomass 10 g L⁻¹, while 96.39% for Pb²⁺ at conditions of (− 1, − 1, + 1): pH 3, initial metal concentration 0.157 mmol L⁻¹ and dosage of biomass 10 g L⁻¹. There were some interactions between factors: pH*C₀ and C₀*D for Cu²⁺, pH*C₀, pH*D and C₀*D for Pb²⁺, pH*C₀ and C₀*D for Cd²⁺. Biosorption from a multi metal system showed that the presence of Cu²⁺ and Cd²⁺ had no significant influence on the Pb²⁺ removal, while Pb²⁺ in solution significantly decreased the removal efficiencies of the other two metals.
