Deep Compressed Communication and Application in Multi-Robot 2D-Lidar SLAM: An Intelligent Huffman Algorithm

Multi-robot Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) systems employing 2D lidar scans are effective for exploration and navigation within GNSS-limited environments. However, scalability concerns arise with larger environments and increased robot numbers, as 2D mapping necessitates substantial processor memory and inter-robot communication bandwidth. Thus, data compression prior to transmission becomes imperative. This study investigates the problem of communication-efficient multi-robot SLAM based on 2D maps and introduces an architecture that enables compressed communication, facilitating the transmission of full maps with significantly reduced bandwidth. We propose a framework employing a lightweight feature extraction Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for a full map, followed by an encoder combining Huffman and Run-Length Encoding (RLE) algorithms to further compress a full map. Subsequently, a lightweight recovery CNN was designed to restore map features. Experimental validation involves applying our compressed communication framework to a two-robot SLAM system. The results demonstrate that our approach reduces communication overhead by 99% while maintaining map quality. This compressed communication strategy effectively addresses bandwidth constraints in multi-robot SLAM scenarios, offering a practical solution for collaborative SLAM applications.

Reinforcement Learning-Based Fractional-Order Adaptive Fault-Tolerant Formation Control of Networked Fixed-Wing UAVs With Prescribed Performance

This article investigates the fault-tolerant formation control (FTFC) problem for networked fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) against faults. To constrain the distributed tracking errors of follower UAVs with respect to neighboring UAVs in the presence of faults, finite-time prescribed performance functions (PPFs) are developed to transform the distributed tracking errors into a new set of errors by incorporating user-specified transient and steady-state requirements. Then, the critic neural networks (NNs) are developed to learn the long-term performance indices, which are used to evaluate the distributed tracking performance. Based on the generated critic NNs, actor NNs are designed to learn the unknown nonlinear terms. Moreover, to compensate for the reinforcement learning errors of actor-critic NNs, nonlinear disturbance observers (DOs) with skillfully constructed auxiliary learning errors are developed to facilitate the FTFC design. Furthermore, by using the Lyapunov stability analysis, it is shown that all follower UAVs can track the leader UAV with predesigned offsets, and the distributed tracking errors are finite-time convergent. Finally, comparative simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

Wilderness Search for Lost Persons Using a Multimodal Aerial-Terrestrial Robot Team

Mobile robots that are capable of multiple modes of locomotion may have tangible advantages over unimodal robots in unstructured and non-homogeneous environments due to their ability to better adapt to local conditions. This paper specifically considers the use of a team of multimodal robots capable of switching between aerial and terrestrial modes of locomotion for wilderness search and rescue (WiSAR) scenarios. It presents a novel search planning method that coordinates the members of the robotic team to maximize the probability of locating a mobile target in the wilderness, potentially, last seen on an a priori known trail. It is assumed that the search area expands over time and, thus, an exhaustive search is not feasible. Earlier research on search planning methods for heterogeneous though unimodal search teams have exploited synergies between robots with different locomotive abilities through coordination and/or cooperation. Work on multimodal robots, on the other hand, has primarily focused on their mechanical design and low-level control. In contrast, our recent work, presented herein, has two major components: (i) target-motion prediction in the presence of a priori known trails in the wilderness, and (ii) probability-guided multimodal robot search-trajectory generation. For the former sub-problem, the novelty of our work lies in the formulation and use of 3D probability curves to capture target distributions under the influence of a priori known walking/hiking trails. For the latter, the novelty lies in the use of a tree structure to represent the decisions involved in multimodal probability-curve-guided search planning, which enables trajectory generation and mode selection to be optimized simultaneously, for example, via a Monte Carlo tree search technique. Extensive simulations, some of which are included herein, have shown that multimodal robotic search teams, coordinated via the trajectory planning method proposed in this paper, clearly outperform their unimodal counterparts in terms of search success rates.

LPWAN-Based Real-Time 2D SLAM and Object Localization for Teleoperation Robot Control

In this study, the teleoperation robot control on a mobile robot with 2D SLAM and object localization using LPWAN is proposed. The mobile robot is a technology gaining popularity due to flexibility and robustness in a variety of terrains. In search and rescue activities, the mobile robots can be used to perform some missions, assist and preserve human life. However, teleoperation control becomes a challenging problem for this implementation. The robust wireless communication not only allows the operator to stay away from dangerous area, but also increases the mobility of the mobile robot itself. Most of teleoperation mobile robots use Wi-Fi having high-bandwidth, yet short communication range. LoRa as LPWAN, on the other hand, has much longer range but low-bandwidth communication speed. Therefore, the combination of them complements each other’s weaknesses. The use of a two-LoRa configuration also enhances the teleoperation capabilities. All information from the mobile robot can be sent to the PC controller in relatively fast enough for real-time SLAM implementation. Furthermore, the mobile robot is also capable of real-time object detection, localization, and transmitting images. Another problem of LoRa communication is a timeout. We apply timeout recovery algorithms to handle this issue, resulting in more stable data. All data have been confirmed by real-time trials and the proposed method can approach the Wi-Fi performance with a low waiting time or delay.
