Magnetic resonance imaging and tissue characterization of a renal cell carcinoma and its osseous metastasis. Report of a case

Recurrent pancreatic carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma: 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT)

Although the current literature is limited, available data suggest that (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging improves the evaluation of patients with recurrent pancreatic carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma. There is evidence that PET/CT is particularly useful in the setting of elevated tumor markers and negative or equivocal CT findings. This article reviews the nature of these carcinomas in the post-therapy setting and describes the strengths and limitations of PET/CT when used for monitoring recurrence.

Cross-sectional imaging of nodal metastases in the abdomen and pelvis

Accurate nodal staging is important for the management of patients with abdominal and pelvic malignancies. Local and nodal staging using cross-sectional imaging can influence treatment planning. The measurement of nodal size is still the most widely used criteria for discriminating between benign and malignant nodes. However, knowledge of the pathways of nodal spread, the treatment history, and careful analysis of nodal characteristics can improve nodal assessment. An appreciation of normal structures that may simulate nodal disease is also important. The potential for further improving nodal staging accuracy by positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance lymphography is discussed.

Magnetic resonance imaging of the musculoskeletal system

During the last few years, the interest and experience in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the musculoskeletal system has increased rapidly. Modern equipment with good spatial resolution and multislice, multiecho technique provides detailed information on the joints, soft tissue and spine within a reasonable examination time, both with superconductive and resistive systems. Today, MRI is an established technique for examination of musculoskeletal tumors and aseptic bone necrosis and it has proven to be of great value for evaluation of diseases of the spine and spinal canal. The definite place of MRI within musculoskeletal diagnostic imaging is not yet settled, but its potential is great, and it will have an important role in the future.

Magnetic resonance imaging of the extremities. I. Technique for depiction of normal anatomy

In 3 adult volunteers, the appropriate technique for depicting the normal anatomy with magnetic resonance imaging was tested. At 0.15 T, the images obtained in different anatomic planes with different pulse sequences and radiofrequency coils were compared. Spin echo technique with a repetition time of 500 ms and an echo time of 30 ms appeared as a good compromise, giving excellent depiction of both soft tissues and joints, especially if a surface coil was used. The optimum anatomic plane varied with the structures examined.
