Abstract
The INHAND (International Harmonization of Nomenclature and Diagnostic Criteria for Lesions) Project (www.toxpath.org/inhand.asp) is a joint initiative of the Societies of Toxicologic Pathology from Europe (ESTP), Great Britain (BSTP), Japan (JSTP), and North America (STP) to develop an internationally accepted nomenclature for proliferative and nonproliferative lesions in laboratory animals. The purpose of this publication is to provide a standardized nomenclature for classifying microscopic lesions observed in most tissues and organs from the minipig used in nonclinical safety studies. Some of the lesions are illustrated by color photomicrographs. The standardized nomenclature presented in this document is also available electronically on the internet (http://www.goreni.org/). Sources of material included histopathology databases from government, academia, and industrial laboratories throughout the world. Content includes spontaneous lesions as well as lesions induced by exposure to test materials. Relevant infectious and parasitic lesions are included as well. A widely accepted and utilized international harmonization of nomenclature for lesions in laboratory animals will provide a common language among regulatory and scientific research organizations in different countries and increase and enrich international exchanges of information among toxicologists and pathologists.

Abstract
Background The present paper reviews the occurrence of neoplasms in swine and presents a case series of 56 tumors submitted to the Slaughterhouse Support Network (Servei de Suport a Escorxadors [SESC] IRTA-CReSA]) from slaughtered pigs from 1998 to 2018 (April) in Catalonia (Spain). The aim of the study was to describe the spectrum of spontaneous neoplastic lesions found in slaughtered pigs and to compare the reported tumor cases with previous published data. Lymphoid neoplasms were characterized and classified using the WHO classification adapted for animals. Results The most reported neoplasm during this period was lymphoma (28). Within lymphomas, the B-cell type was the most common, being the diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (15/28) the most represented subtype. Other submitted non-lymphoid neoplasms included melanoma (7), nephroblastoma (3), mast cell tumor (2), liposarcoma (2), osteochondromatosis (2), papillary cystadenocarcinoma (1), peripheral nerve sheath tumor (1), lymphoid leukemia (1), fibropapilloma (1), hemangiosarcoma (1), hepatoma (1), histiocytic sarcoma (1), pheochromocytoma (1) and osteosarcoma (1). Conclusions The existence of a well-established Slaughterhouse Support Network allowed the compilation of comprehensive data for further epidemiological and pathological studies, particularly about less commonly reported lesions in livestock such as neoplasms in pigs. Abstract
As clinical pig organ xenotransplantation draws closer, more attention is being paid to diseases that affect pigs and those that provide a potential risk to human recipients of pig organs. Neoplasia arising from the pig organ graft is one such concern. Various tumors and other neoplastic diseases are well known to show increased incidence in organ allotransplant recipients receiving immunosuppressive therapy. Whether this effect will prove to be the case after xenotransplantation has not yet been established. Malignant tumors in young pigs are rare, with lymphosarcoma, nephroblastoma, and melanoma being the most common. The combination of noninvasive techniques and intraoperative examination of the pig organ likely will readily confirm that a pig organ graft is tumor-free before xenotransplantation. Posttransplantion lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is a concern after allotransplantation, but the incidence after solid organ allotransplantation is low when compared with hematopoietic cell allotransplantation (for example, bone marrow transplantation), unless immunosuppressive therapy is particularly intensive. Organ-source pigs used for clinical xenotransplantation will be bred and housed under designated pathogen-free conditions and will be free of the γ-herpesvirus that is a key factor in the development of PTLD in pigs. Therefore if a recipient of a pig xenograft develops PTLD, it will almost certainly be of recipient origin. The increasing availability of organs from pigs genetically-engineered to protect them from the human immune response likely will diminish the need for intensive immunosuppressive therapy. Considering the low incidence of malignant disease in young pigs, donor-derived malignancy is likely to be rare in patients who receive pig organ grafts. However, if the graft remains viable for many years, the incidence of graft malignancy may increase.

Abstract
A case of signet ring cell lymphoma in a 3-year-old mixed-breed sow is described. Macroscopical examination revealed enlargement of superficial, thoracic and abdominal lymph nodes and multiple tumor masses in the liver. The neoplastic tissue was composed of follicle center-like structures, in which neoplastic cells with Russell bodies were conspicuous. The bodies were immunostained for IgM (κ), and corresponded to moderately dense amorphous material within markedly distended cisternae of rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) at the ultrastructural level. In contrast to typical signet ring cell lymphoma, the component cells of which resemble follicular center B lymphocytes with poorly developed RER, most neoplastic cells had features of plasma cells characterized by a cartwheel arrangement of heterochromatin and development of RER. Signet ring cells frequently had one or a few large Russell bodies occupying the entire cytoplasm, which may have been caused by abundant synthesis and defective secretion of immunoglobulin.

Abstract
Small intestinal T-cell lymphoma and mucinous adenocarcinoma are rarely reported in the pig, with most lymphomas being of B-cell origin and only a single report of mucinous adenocarcinoma. Two aged Vietnamese potbellied pigs had concurrent T-cell lymphoma and mucinous adenocarcinoma of the small intestine. The lymphomas formed polypoid masses that projected into the intestinal lumen, whereas the mucinous adenocarcinomas were mural masses that bulged from the serosal surface. Immunohistochemically, neoplastic cells within the lymphomas were positive for CD3 and negative for CD79a. Mucicarmine stain highlighted the abundant cytoplasmic and extracellular mucin in the adenocarcinomas.

Abstract
A 14-month-old Yorkshire boar was examined. In the abdomen, two big tumour masses were found in the intestines. In addition, pale nodules occurred in the liver, kidneys, in and upon the spleen, in the wall of the heart and in the testicles. By immunohistochemistry tumour cells were positive for CD3, but negative for B-lymphocyte antigen and CD79. From these findings it was concluded that the boar was suffering from multicentric lymphosarcoma probably of T-cell origin.

Abstract
The present study was undertaken to determine whether human decay accelerating factor (hDAF) transgene would prevent hyperacute rejection (HAR) while perfused with human blood or extracorporeally in baboons. Four hDAF pig kidneys and three non-hDAF pig kidneys were perfused ex vivo with fresh human blood for 6 h. Additionally four hDAF pig kidneys and four non-hDAF pig kidneys were extracorporeally perfused in baboons and pigs, respectively, for 3 h. In ex vivo perfusion, the color of hDAF pig kidneys remained pink at the end of 6-h perfusion and they had normal histology, while non-hDAF kidneys developed HAR. HDAF pig kidneys had superior function over non-transgenic pig kidneys. Urine output was 17.31 +/- 3.70 ml/h for hDAF pig kidneys, and only 5.81 +/- 0.26 ml/h for non-hDAF kidneys (P < 0.05). Creatinine clearance was 1.16 +/- 1.24 ml/min for hDAF kidneys and 0.22 +/- 0.15 ml/min for non-hDAF kidneys (P < 0.05). Other functional data including potassium, urine specific density, and osmolality were normal in the hDAF kidneys, while in non-hDAF kidneys, serum potassium was elevated to over 9 mmol/l by the end of perfusion (P < 0.01). Non-hDAF kidneys also lost more sodium through urine than hDAF kidneys (173.67 +/- 14.05 mmol/l vs. 109 +/- 31 mmol/l, P < 0.05). In the extracorporeal perfusion, all the baboons tolerated the procedure well with normal hemodynamic and hemotologic profiles. These baboons were well until killed 42 to 56 days after perfusion, although their antiporcine antibodies were greatly elevated. We conclude that hDAF transgene protects against HAR, allowing the pig kidney to function normally while perfused with human blood, and that extracorporeal perfusion using hDAF pig kidneys is a safe procedure in baboons.

Abstract
Use of the pig as an animal model in schistosomiasis research is increasing, but knowledge of the porcine immune response to schistosome infection is still very limited. We investigated the immunohistology of different maturation stages of the Schistosoma japonicum egg granuloma in pigs. Liver sections from pigs experimentally infected with S.japonicum for 9, 12 or 21 weeks were examined by immunohistochemistry using a three-step streptavidin-biotin-complex/immunoperoxidase method or a two-step alkaline phosphatase-mediated system. All granulomas showed marked expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II in epithelioid macrophages and were dominated by T lymphocytes, comprising both CD4+ and CD8+ phenotypes, with consistently higher proportions noted for CD8+ cells. B lymphocytes, as identified by expression of CD21, were confined to lymphoid nodular structures primarily associated with mature granulomas. Early and mature granulomas contained numerous immunoglobulin (Ig)G+ plasma cells. Significant differences in immunohistology related to duration of infection were not observed. The results indicate that all stages of the hepatic S.japonicum egg granuloma in the pig manifests MHC class II-dependent CD4+ T cell activity concomitant with infiltration of CD8+ T cells. B cell activity preceding the effector cell stage appears to occur in granuloma-associated lymphoid nodules, whereas antibody, mainly IgG, is produced within the granuloma.

Abstract
Case information and histologic slides for 688 admissions of feline tissues from 12 veterinary institutions were assembled and reviewed to determine tissues obtained by biopsy or necropsy, age and sex of cat, tumor topography, feline leukemia viral antigen status, histologic frequency of mitoses, diagnosis, presence of necrosis, and presence and degree of sclerosis. Histologic sections were examined to place the lesions in one of the diagnostic categories of the National Cancer Institute working formulation (NCI WF) for lymphomas or lymphoid leukemia. Correlations between the various factors determined were tested using contingency tables and chi-square analysis to provide a statistical comparison between the levels of observations determined by case examination with the numbers expected from chance alone. Significant correlations (P < or = 0.05) were found between diagnosis and tumor topography, the frequency of mitoses, necrosis, sclerosis, and age, between mitoses and necrosis, topography, age, and feline leukemia viral infection status, between topography and necrosis and age, and between leukemia viral status and age. Significant correlations between diagnosis and tumor topography included a greater than expected number of cases of acute and chronic lymphoid leukemia and multicentric distribution of tumor. Small cell lymphomas were more frequent than expected in enteric and cutaneous areas and less frequent than expected in mediastinal, renal, and multicentric areas. In contrast, the high-grade small noncleaved type of lymphomas was found significantly more frequently than expected in the mediastinum and less frequently than expected in enteric tissues. In comparing diagnosis and frequency of mitoses, the lymphomas classified as low grade by the NCI WF were significantly more frequent than expected in the lower categories (0-2/100x) of mitoses, and those classified as high-grade lymphomas were more frequent than expected in the higher categories (4-8/1OOx) of mitoses. In comparing diagnosis and sclerosis, diffuse sclerosis was more frequent than expected for the intermediate grade lymphomas of mixed cell type and for the high-grade lymphomas of the immunoblastic polymorphous type. In comparing diagnosis and locally extensive necrosis, this feature was more frequently observed than expected for cases of intermediate grade lymphoma of the small-cleaved cell category and for the high-grade lymphoma of the immunoblastic cell type. In comparing mitoses and necrosis, the lower grade lymphomas were, in general, characterized by a lower frequency of mitoses and a lower incidence of necrosis then would be expected from chance alone. In contrast, the higher grade lymphomas were characterized by more frequent mitoses and a higher incidence of necrosis. In tests comparing mitoses and tumor topography, lymphomas of the alimentary tract were more frequently observed than expected in the category with the lowest level of mitoses (0-1/100x), whereas lymphomas of the mediastinum and kidney were more frequently observed than expected in the categories with a higher level (4-20/ 100x) of mitoses.

Abstract
A case of multicentric lymphoma with a mixed cell population of large to small round cells with the same nuclear features in a pig was studied immunohistochemically. Neoplastic tissues were composed of 20-50% B-cell lymphoma cells with lambda-type light chain restriction, and 50-80% cluster of differentiation (CD)3+ T-cells. These findings were similar to those of human T-cell-rich B-cell lymphoma (TCRBCL). In addition, both immunoglobulin IgM and IgG were detected in the cytoplasm of the identical lymphoma cell. This pattern of heavy chain expression appeared to be due to maturational arrest in cellular development at the point of heavy chain class switching, as occurs in biclonal gammopathy in human lymphoid malignancy. This case as TCRBCL containing two types of heavy chains with light chain restriction (IgM-lambda and IgG-lambda) appears to be the first of its kind reported in the English literature for either pigs or domestic animals.
