Apoptosis and CD4+ lymphocyte depletion following feline immunodeficiency virus infection of a T-lymphocyte cell line

An experimental study of the pathogenicity of a duck hepatitis A virus genotype C isolate in specific pathogen free ducklings

Duck hepatitis A virus genotype C (DHAV-C), recognized recently, is one of the pathogens causing fatal duck viral hepatitis in ducklings, especially in Asia. To demonstrate the pathogenesis of the DHAV-C isolate, 3-day-old specific pathogen free ducklings were inoculated subcutaneously with a DHAV-C isolate and the clinical signs were observed. Virus distribution, histological and apoptotic morphological changes of various tissues were examined at different times post inoculation. The serial, characteristic changes included haemorrhage and swelling of the liver. Apoptotic cells and virus antigen staining were found in all of the tissues examined. Where more virus antigen staining was detected, there were more severe histopathological and apoptotic changes. The amount of virus antigen and the histological and apoptotic morphological changes agreed with each other and became increasingly severe with length of time after infection. Apoptotic cells were ubiquitously distributed, especially among lymphocytes, macrophages and monocytes in immune organs such as the bursa of Fabricius, thymus and spleen, and in liver, kidney and cerebral cells. Necrosis was also observed within 72 h post inoculation in all organs examined, except the cerebrum, and was characterized by cell swelling and collapsed plasma membrane. These results suggest that the recent outbreak of disease caused by DHAV-C virus is pantropic, causing apoptosis and necrosis of different organs. The apoptosis and necrosis caused by the DHAV-C field strain in this study is associated with pathogenesis and DHAV-C-induced lesions.

Clinical aspects of feline retroviruses: a review

Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) are retroviruses with global impact on the health of domestic cats. The two viruses differ in their potential to cause disease. FeLV is more pathogenic, and was long considered to be responsible for more clinical syndromes than any other agent in cats. FeLV can cause tumors (mainly lymphoma), bone marrow suppression syndromes (mainly anemia), and lead to secondary infectious diseases caused by suppressive effects of the virus on bone marrow and the immune system. Today, FeLV is less commonly diagnosed than in the previous 20 years; prevalence has been decreasing in most countries. However, FeLV importance may be underestimated as it has been shown that regressively infected cats (that are negative in routinely used FeLV tests) also can develop clinical signs. FIV can cause an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome that increases the risk of opportunistic infections, neurological diseases, and tumors. In most naturally infected cats, however, FIV itself does not cause severe clinical signs, and FIV-infected cats may live many years without any health problems. This article provides a review of clinical syndromes in progressively and regressively FeLV-infected cats as well as in FIV-infected cats.

Apoptosis induced in vivo by new type gosling viral enteritis virus

In this study, apoptosis was induced by new type gosling viral enteritis virus (NGVEV) in experimentally infected goslings is reported in detail for the first time. After 3-day-old goslings were orally inoculated with a NGVEV-CN strain suspension, the time course of NGVEV effects on apoptotic morphological changes of the internal tissues was evaluated. These changes were observed by histological analysis with light microscopy and ultrastructural analysis with transmission electron microscopy. DNA fragmentation was assessed with a terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end-labeling (TUNEL) assay and DNA ladder analysis. A series of characteristic apoptotic morphological changes including chromatin condensation and margination, cytoplasmic shrinkage, plasma membrane blebbing, and formation of apoptotic bodies were noted. Apoptosis was readily observed in the lymphoid and gastrointestinal organs, and sporadically occurred in other organs after 3 days post-infection (PI). The presence and quantity of TUNEL-positive cells increased with infection time until 9 days PI. DNA extracted from the NGVEV-infected gosling cells displayed characteristic 180~200 bp ladders. Apoptotic cells were ubiquitously distributed, especially among lymphocytes, macrophages, monocytes, and epithelial and intestinal cells. Necrosis was subsequently detected during the late NGVEV-infection phase, which was characterized by cell swelling, plasma membrane collapse, and rapidly lysis. Our results suggested that apoptosis may play an important role in the pathogenesis of NGVE disease.

Today, FeLV is less important as a deadly infectious agent as in the last 20 years prevalence has been decreasing in most countries.

Could FIV zoonosis responsible of the breakdown of the pathocenosis which has reduced the European CCR5-Delta32 allele frequencies?

Background

In Europe, the north-south downhill cline frequency of the chemokine receptor CCR5 allele with a 32-bp deletion (CCR5-Δ32) raises interesting questions for evolutionary biologists. We had suggested first that, in the past, the European colonizers, principally Romans, might have been instrumental of a progressively decrease of the frequencies southwards. Indeed, statistical analyses suggested strong negative correlations between the allele frequency and historical parameters including the colonization dates by Mediterranean civilisations. The gene flows from colonizers to native populations were extremely low but colonizers are responsible of the spread of several diseases suggesting that the dissemination of parasites in naive populations could have induced a breakdown rupture of the fragile pathocenosis changing the balance among diseases. The new equilibrium state has been reached through a negative selection of the null allele.

Results

Most of the human diseases are zoonoses and cat might have been instrumental in the decrease of the allele frequency, because its diffusion through Europe was a gradual process, due principally to Romans; and that several cat zoonoses could be transmitted to man. The possible implication of a feline lentivirus (FIV) which does not use CCR5 as co-receptor is discussed. This virus can infect primate cells in vitro and induces clinical signs in macaque. Moreover, most of the historical regions with null or low frequency of CCR5-Δ32 allele coincide with historical range of the wild felid species which harbor species-specific FIVs.

Conclusion

We proposed the hypothesis that the actual European CCR5 allelic frequencies are the result of a negative selection due to a disease spreading. A cat zoonosis, could be the most plausible hypothesis. Future studies could provide if CCR5 can play an antimicrobial role in FIV pathogenesis. Moreover, studies of ancient DNA could provide more evidences regarding the implications of zoonoses in the actual CCR5-Δ32 distribution.

Establishment of a feline astrocyte-derived cell line (G355-5 cells) expressing feline CD134 and a rapid quantitative assay for T-lymphotropic feline immunodeficiency viruses

Few laboratory strains of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) can infect Crandell feline kidney cells (an epithelial-type of cells), however, most primary isolates are T-lymphotropic. T-lymphotropic FIV requires both feline CD134 (an activation marker of helper T-lymphocytes) and CXCR4 (a chemokine receptor) in infection as primary and secondary receptors, respectively. Using feline T-lymphoblastoid cell lines, titration of primary FIV isolates was carried out, however the titration assay was laborious and time-consuming. In this study, using G355-5 cells (a feline astrocyte-derived cell line) transduced with a cDNA of feline CD134 as target cells, an assay system was developed to quantitate primary FIV isolates. With a previous method using a feline T-lymphoblastoid cell line (MYA-1 cells) highly sensitive to FIV, it took 12 days to complete the assay, however, it took only 2 days with the new method. The FIV-infected cells became in a state of persistent infection, producing a large amount of FIV, indicating that the cells will be useful for propagation of T-lymphotropic FIV strains.

FIV as a Model for HIV: An Overview

Animal models for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection play a key role in understanding the pathogenesis of AIDS and the development of therapeutic agents and vaccines. As the only lentivirus that causes an immunodeficiency resembling that of HIV infection, in its natural host, feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) has been a unique and powerful model for AIDS research. FIV was first described in 1987 by Niels Pedersen and co-workers as the causative agent for a fatal immunodeficiency syndrome observed in cats housed in a cattery in Petaluma, California. Since this landmark observation, multiple studies have shown that natural and experimental infection of cats with biological isolates of FIV produces an AIDS syndrome very similar in pathogenesis to that observed for human AIDS. FIV infection induces an acute viremia associated with Tcell alterations including depressed CD4 :CD8 T-cell ratios and CD4 T-cell depletion, peripheral lymphadenopathy, and neutropenia. In later stages of FIV infection, the host suffers from chronic persistent infections that are typically self-limiting in an immunocompetent host, as well as opportunistic infections, chronic diarrhea and wasting, blood dyscracias, significant CD4 T-cell depletion, neurologic disorders, and B-cell lymphomas. Importantly, chronic FIV infection induces a progressive lymphoid and CD4 T-cell depletion in the infected cat. The primary mode of natural FIV transmission appears to be blood-borne facilitated by fighting and biting. However, experimental infection through transmucosal routes (rectal and vaginal mucosa and perinatal) have been well documented for specific FIV isolates. Accordingly, FIV disease pathogenesis exhibits striking similarities to that described for HIV-1 infection.

Effect of 17beta-estradiol and progesterone on the expression of FeLV in chronically infected cells

In a previous study, it was found that even though more male cats were infected by feline leukaemia virus (FeLV), females seemed to progress easier to overt disease. To study the effect of female hormones, 17beta-estradiol and progesterone were added in different concentrations (10(-3) M to 10(-12) M) to a culture of persistently FeLV-infected cells. The effect of both hormones was very similar. After 24 h the cell viability was very low at 10(-3) M and 10(-4) M but similar to controls at the remaining concentrations. Liberation of viral particles was estimated by the reverse transcriptase activity (RT), which was the lowest also at 10(-3) M and 10(-4) M. However, low viability could not account for this low RT, as when cells were lysed with lysis buffer RT was high. Thus, cells were dying without freeing viral particles, suggestive of apoptosis. This possibility was confirmed by staining hormone-treated cells with annexin V and propidium iodide. The FeLV antigen p27 measured in the cultures had a maximum at 10(-3) M and 10(-4) M, higher than controls and lysed cells, so the presence of p27 in the supernatant was not only due to cell lysis but a consequence of hormone effect. In conclusion, 17beta-estradiol and progesterone induce death of FeLV-infected cells at high concentrations, probably through a process of apoptosis, which might limit the spread of the infection, as infective viral particles would be hampered from budding.

Comparative replication kinetics of two cytopathic feline lentiviruses ex vivo

Feline immunodeficiency virus infection of cats provides a model to elucidate mechanisms of lentiviral pathogenesis. We isolated a non-domestic FIV from a Pallas' cat, FIV-Oma, which replicates in feline PBMCs and CRFK cells. To gain insights into FIV pathogenesis, we compared rates of viral replication and apoptosis of FIV-Oma with FIV-PPR in the MYA-1 T-cell line. To minimize heterogeneity of virus, infections were initiated with virus derived from molecular clones. Viral DNA and RNA levels, assessed by qPCR and qRT-PCR, apoptosis, and supernatant reverse transcriptase were slower in FIV-Oma infections. Immunostaining for cellular Gag showed that few cells were productively infected. The majority of cells infected with either virus instead became apoptotic. Apoptosis was detectable within 6 h PI, suggesting activation of a signaling pathway. We propose that apoptosis is due to interaction of virus with cells, and is the usual outcome of infection by cytopathic FIVs in these cells.

Feline immunodeficiency virus envelope glycoprotein mediates apoptosis in activated PBMC by a mechanism dependent on gp41 function

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is a lentivirus that causes immunodeficiency in cats, which parallels HIV-1-induced immunodeficiency in humans. It has been established that HIV envelope (Env) glycoprotein mediates T cell loss via a mechanism that requires CXCR4 binding. The Env glycoprotein of FIV, similar to HIV, requires CXCR4 binding for viral entry, as well as inducing membrane fusion leading to syncytia formation. However, the role of FIV Env in T cell loss and the molecular mechanisms governing this process have not been elucidated. We studied the role of Env glycoprotein in FIV-mediated T cell apoptosis in an in vitro model. Our studies demonstrate that membrane-expressed FIV Env induces apoptosis in activated feline peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) by a mechanism that requires CXCR4 binding, as the process was inhibited by CXCR4 antagonist AMD3100 in a dose-dependent manner. Interestingly, studies regarding the role of CD134, the recently identified primary receptor of FIV, suggest that binding to CD134 may not be important for induction of apoptosis in PBMC. However, inhibiting Env-mediated fusion post CXCR4 binding by FIV gp41-specific fusion inhibitor also inhibited apoptosis. Under similar conditions, a fusion-defective gp41 mutant was unable to induce apoptosis in activated PBMC. Our findings are the first report suggesting the potential of FIV Env to mediate apoptosis in bystander cells by a process that is dependent on gp41 function.

Quantitative analysis of Fas and Fas ligand mRNAs in a feline T-lymphoid cell line after infection with feline immunodeficiency virus and primary peripheral blood mononuclear cells obtained from cats infected with the virus

Apoptosis is frequently observed in feline lymphocytes in association with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection. In this study, to investigate the mechanism of FIV-induced apoptosis, levels of Fas and Fas ligand mRNAs were measured by real-time reverse transcription-PCR. In a feline T-lymphoid cell line the amounts of Fas ligand mRNA increased along with the induction of apoptosis after in vitro infection with FIV. In PBMC collected from 10 cats naturally infected with FIV, Fas ligand mRNA levels were significantly higher than those in PBMC from five uninfected cats. These results indicate that the increased expression of Fas ligand may be involved in the induction of apoptosis of lymphocytes in FIV infection.

Induction of apoptotic cellular death in lymphatic tissues of cattle experimentally infected with different strains of rinderpest virus

The presence, type, and extent of cellular death in lymphatic tissues of cattle experimentally infected with rinderpest virus strains of different virulence was investigated morphologically. Cells with DNA strand breaks were identified in histological sections of palatine tonsil, spleen, and mesenteric and mandibular lymph nodes by the TUNEL (terminal desoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labelling) assay. In addition, representative samples of lymphatic tissues were examined by transmission electron microscopy. The results indicated that cellular disassembly in lymphatic tissues was caused by both apoptosis and oncosis. Cells with DNA strand breaks were observed in follicular and parafollicular areas of lymphatic tissues and their numbers were determined. A significant correlation was found between the number of TUNEL-positive cells and viral virulence. These results suggest that, in addition to oncosis, apoptotic cellular death in lymphatic tissues contributes substantially to the pathogenesis of rinderpest.

TNF-alpha-induced cell death in feline immunodeficiency virus-infected cells is mediated by the caspase cascade

TNF-alpha induced apoptosis in a feline fibroblastic cell line (CRFK) infected with FIV but not in its uninfected control. In this study, to understand the molecular basis of the different susceptibilities to TNF-alpha between FIV-infected and uninfected cells, we examined the expression of TNF receptors and the activation of the caspase and NF-kappaB pathways. Expression levels of TNFR I and TNFR II mRNAs were similar between uninfected and FIV-infected CRFK cells. To understand the role of caspases in TNF-alpha-induced apoptosis, we examined the effect of three different classes of caspase inhibitors, Z-VAD-FMK, Ac-YVAD-CMK, and Z-DEVD-FMK, on the TNF-alpha-induced apoptosis in FIV-infected cells. Pretreatment with each of these caspase inhibitors protected FIV-infected CRFK cells from TNF-alpha-induced cell death. Moreover, one of the caspase substrates, poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase, was shown to be cleaved after TNF-alpha treatment in FIV-infected CRFK cells but not in uninfected CRFK cells. Electrophoretic mobility shift assay using an NF-kappaB motif oligonucleotide and promoter assay using an NF-kappaB luciferase reporter construct indicated that TNF-alpha treatment had induced activation of NF-kappaB in both FIV-infected and uninfected CRFK cells. The present study indicates that TNF-alpha-induced apoptosis in FIV-infected CRFK cells is mediated by the activation of the caspase cascade, but not by either upregulation of TNF receptor or inhibition of NF-kappaB.

CD8+ thymic lymphocytes express reduced levels of CD8beta and increased interferon gamma in cats perinatally infected with the JSY3 molecular clone of feline immunodeficiency virus

Biological isolates of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) cause a relative expansion of activated single-positive CD8(+) (SP CD8(+)) lymphocytes within the thymus of infected cats. In this study, thymic SP CD8(+) lymphocytes were analyzed from cats inoculated as neonates with a pathogenic molecular clone of FIV, JSY3, which was previously derived from the wild-type biological isolate FIV(NCSU-1) (NCSU-1). Four cats were inoculated intraperitoneally with NCSU-1 and compared with 11 cats inoculated with JSY3. Five control cats matched in litter and age were administered an intraperitoneal sham inoculum. Between 12 and 16 weeks postinoculation, interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) mRNA was quantified by RT-PCR in freshly isolated thymocytes and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). The quantity of IFN-gamma mRNA was increased more than 10-fold in thymocytes and PBMCs of 13 of 13 FIV-inoculated cats as compared with the sham-inoculated controls. IFN-gamma mRNA coenriched with magnetically sorted CD8(+) PBMCs and single-positive (SP) CD8(+) thymocytes. Cells expressing IFN-gamma mRNA were located within the thymic perivascular zone, along the corticomedullary junction, and adjacent to lymphoid follicles. The expansion of thymic SP CD8(+) cells was associated with an increase in CD8alpha(+)/beta(neg) and CD8alpha(+)/beta(lo) phenotypes, the latter population resembling a previously reported memory/effector peripheral blood cell with FIV suppressor activity. From these data we conclude that JSY3 and NCSU-1 induce similar phenotypic changes in thymic and peripheral blood CD8(+) cells. Thus, JSY3 is pathogenic for the thymus in vivo and will be useful for defining determinants of the CD8(+) cell response in this pediatric AIDS model.

Therapeutic application of zinc in human immunodeficiency virus against opportunistic infections

The relevance of zinc in resistance to infections by virus, fungi and bacteria is recognized because of its pivotal role in the efficiency of the entire immune system, in particular in conferring biological activity to a thymic hormone called thymulin, which has differentiation properties on T-cell lines. In infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the zinc-bound form of thymulin (active thymulin, ZnFTS) is strongly reduced in stage IV of the disease (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention classification) with concomitant decrements in CD4(+) cell count and zincemia values. The zinc-unbound form of thymulin (inactive thymulin, FTS) is, in contrast, very high. The in vitro addition of zinc to plasma samples induces a recovery of the thymulin active form, suggesting low zinc bioavailability as the cause of impaired thymic functions with consequent CD4(+) depletion. An analysis of risk factors for the incidence of recidivism opportunistic infections shows CD4(+) depletion and zinc deficiency to have significant scores. Supplementation with zinc for 1 mo (45 mg Zn(2+)/d) associated with zidovudine (AZT) therapy in stage IV induces recovery of active zinc-bound thymulin, of zincemia, of CD4(+) cells with concomitant reduction (50%) of recidivism opportunistic infections compared with the AZT-treated group. Complete disappearance of recidivism by Candida aesophagea or Pneumocystis carinii is observed after supplementation with zinc. The relative risk factors (CD4(+) depletion and zinc-deficiency) have lower scores in the HIV-positive zinc-treated group, confirming, as such, the relevance of zinc in opportunistic infections that involve extracellular matrix. Such an assumption is indirectly confirmed with new HAART, where no opportunistic infections occur. Indeed, HIV RNA is inversely correlated with both CD4(+) and zincemia values (r = -0.73, P<0.01) in HAART-treated subjects. Lower scores for the same relative factors for the appearance of opportunistic infections are present in HAART-treated subjects compared with those treated with AZT. These findings, on the one hand, show the poor efficacy of AZT therapy compared with HAART therapy for the progression of HIV, but on the other hand, they suggest that the lack of occurrence of opportunistic infections by HAART may also result from major zinc bioavailability. This further supports the key role played by zinc against opportunistic infections in HIV with a possible independent effect by either HIV or the pathogens involved.

Productive infection of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells by feline immunodeficiency virus: implications for vector development

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a lentivirus causing immune suppression and neurological disease in cats. Like primate lentiviruses, FIV utilizes the chemokine receptor CXCR4 for infection. In addition, FIV gene expression has been demonstrated in immortalized human cell lines. To investigate the extent and mechanism by which FIV infected primary and immortalized human cell lines, we compared the infectivity of two FIV strains, V1CSF and Petaluma, after cell-free infection. FIV genome was detected in infected human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and macrophages at 21 and 14 days postinfection, respectively. Flow cytometry analysis of FIV-infected human PBMC indicated that antibodies to FIV p24 recognized 12% of the cells. Antibodies binding the CCR3 chemokine receptor maximally inhibited infection of human PBMC by both FIV strains compared to antibodies to CXCR4 or CCR5. Reverse transcriptase levels increased in FIV-infected human PBMC, with detection of viral titers of 10(1.3) to 10(2.1) 50% tissue culture infective doses/10(6) cells depending on the FIV strain examined. Cell death in human PBMC infected with either FIV strain was significantly elevated relative to uninfected control cultures. These findings indicate that FIV can productively infect primary human cell lines and that viral strain specificity should be considered in the development of an FIV vector for gene therapy.

Apoptotic fraction in lymphoid tissue of FIV-infected SPF cats

In the present study the apoptotic fraction has been investigated in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and in lymphoid tissue of six clinically asymptomatic serologically positive specific pathogen free (SPF) FIV-infected cats with a decline in peripheral blood CD4+ lymphocytes, compared to five FIV- SPF controls. Apoptosis in PBMCs was scored in relation to cell cycle phases judged by the integrating cytometric measure of DNA content with 3H-thymidine and 3H-leucine incorporation. Apoptosis in lymphoid tissue was revealed with the ApopTag-peroxidase kit, quantified by image analysis and expressed as apoptotic index (number of apoptosis per 100 cells). The high percentage of apoptotic death in lymphocytes from FIV+ cats was chronologically related to the entrance of cells in the S phase of the cell cycle (p < 0.0001). No difference in the apoptotic index was revealed comparing the follicular, cortical + paracortical and medullary compartments in lymph nodes of FIV+ and FIV- cats. In each group of cats a similar pattern of apoptosis expression was revealed in lymph nodes: significantly higher in follicular vs. both cortical + paracortical and medullary compartments (p < 0.001). In the thymus a significant increase in apoptotic index was revealed in the cortical compartment of the FIV+ cats compared to FIV- (p < 0.001), while in the spleen both the red and white pulp expressed a higher value in FIV+ cats compared to FIV-(p < 0.05) and the former showed a pattern of expression as follows: in the red pulp significantly higher than in the white pulp (p < 0.001). This investigation suggests that the priming signals for apoptosis in FIV infection parallels the S phase of the cell cycle and peripheral blood changes could follow both thymic and splenic modifications in apoptotic expression.

Selective thymocyte depletion and immunoglobulin coating in the thymus of cats infected with feline immunodeficiency virus

Thymus alterations associated with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), an AIDS animal model, were investigated by measuring phenotypic composition of thymocytes, structure of thymic epithelial cells, and transcription of viral RNA in the thymus of FIV-infected juvenile kittens. These kittens either acquired infection by natural vertical transmission or were experimentally inoculated with the virus at defined times of fetal or neonatal life. Thymocytes from FIV-infected cats were analyzed by flow cytometry for the differential expression of CD4, CD8, Pan T, and IgG and subpopulation percentages were compared to values from uninfected littermates. Infected cats demonstrated a decrease in the percentage of CD4+/CD8+ lymphocytes and a concurrent increase in the percentage of CD4-/CD8-, CD4-/CD8+, and IgG+ lymphocytes. Absolute numbers of IgG+ cells were increased with FIV infection. On bivariate distribution scatter plots generated by two-color flow cytometry, this population of IgG+ cells overlapped extensively with cells having low to minimally detectable levels of a pan-T lymphocyte marker, suggesting that thymocytes were coated with IgG. Immunohistochemical detection of feline IgG defined a broad zone of IgG+ cells within the residual cortex but outside lymphoid follicles. However, cells stained with B5, a feline B lymphocyte marker, localized almost exclusively to the centers of lymphoid follicles that were also characterized by a lack of internal cytokeratin staining. FIV RNA transcripts detected by in situ hybridization using an FIVgag RNA probe were evenly distributed throughout the thymic parenchyma except in lymphoid follicles, which were generally devoid of FIV expression. Despite these phenotypic and structural changes, thymus weight, expressed as a percentage of body weight, was not significantly reduced. From these data, we conclude that the clinically asymptomatic stage of FIV infection is associated with two distinct B cell-related phenomena within the thymus-the formation of germinal centers and the coating of thymocytes with IgG. These changes accompany a distorted thymocyte distribution characterized by a reduced percentage of CD4+/CD8+ lymphocytes and a relative increase in CD4-/CD8+ and CD4-/CD8- lymphocytes. Together, these findings suggest that degenerative thymic changes after lentivirus infection may involve humoral immune mechanisms.
