Abstract
BACKGROUND Blood clots are composed of aggregated fibrin and platelets, and thrombosis is the body's natural response to repairing injured blood vessels or stopping bleeding. However, when this process is activated abnormally, such as in a mechanical blood pump, it can lead to excessive thrombus formation. Therefore, how to avoid or reduce the probability of thrombus formation is an important indicator of the stable operation of a blood pump. METHODS In this paper, Lagrangian particle tracking trajectories are simulated to study platelet transport in a blood pump. The design of the thrombus blood pump was optimized using an orthogonal design method based on three factors: inlet angle, outlet angle, and blade number. The effect of blood pump pressure, rotational speed, impeller outlet angle, inlet angle, and number of blades on thrombus formation was analysed using Fluent software. The thrombogenic potential was derived by analyzing the trajectory and flow parameters of platelet particles in the blood pump, as well as the statistical parameters of residence time and stress accumulation thrombus in the platelet pump. RESULTS When the impeller inlet angle is 30°, the outlet angle is 20°, and the number of blades is 6, the probability of thrombus formation is minimized in the orthogonal design method, aligning with the requirements for blood pump performance. CONCLUSIONS These design parameters serve as a numerical guideline for optimizing the geometry of the semi-open impeller in blood pumps and provide a theoretical foundation for subsequent in vitro experiments.

Abstract
With improved treatment of coronary artery disease, more patients are surviving until heart failure occurs. This leads to an increase in patients needing devices for struggling with heart failure. Ventricular assist devices are known as the mainstay of these devices. This study aimed to design a centrifugal pump as a ventricular assist device. In order to design the pump, firstly, the geometrical parameters of the pump, including the gap distance, blade height, and position of the outlet relative to the blade, were investigated. Finally, the selected configuration, which had all the appropriate characteristics, both hydraulically and physiologically, was used for the rest of the study. The study of the blade, as the main component in energy transfer to the blood, in a centrifugal pump, has been considered in the present study. In this regard, the point-to-point design method, which is used in industrial applications, was implemented. The designer chooses the relationship between the blade angles at each radius in the point-to-point method. The present study selected logarithmic and second-order relations for designing the blade's profile. In total, 58 blades were examined in this study, which differed regarding blade inlet and outlet angles and the relationship between angle and radial position. ANSYS CFX 17.0 software was utilized to simulate blades' performances, and a benchmark pump provided by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was used to validate the numerical simulations. Then, the selected impeller from the numerical investigation was manufactured, and its performance was compared experimentally with the FDA benchmark pump. A hydraulic test rig was also developed for experimental studies. The results showed that among the blades designed in this study, the blade with an input angle of 45° and an output angle of 55°, which is designed to implement a logarithmic relationship, has the best performance. The selected impeller configuration can increase the total head (at least by 20%) at different flow rates compared to the FDA pump.

Abstract
This article discusses a new continuous flow mini pump that has been developed to improve symptoms and prognosis in patients with Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction (HFpEF), for which there are currently no established treatments. The pump is designed to discharge a reduced percentage of blood volume from the left atrium to the subclavian artery, clamped at the bifurcation with the aortic arch. The overall specifications, design parameters, and hemodynamics of this new device are discussed, along with data from in vitro circulation loop tests and numerical simulations. The article also compares the results for two configurations of the pump with respect to key indicators of hemocompatibility used in blood pump development.

Abstract
To investigate the effect of rotor design configuration on hemodynamic features, hemocompatibility and dynamic balance of blood pumps. Computational fluid dynamics was employed to investigate the effects of rotor type (closed impeller, semi-open impeller), clearance height and back vanes on blood pump performance. In particular, the Eulerian hemolysis model based on a power-law function and the Lagrangian thrombus model with integrated stress accumulation and residence time were applied to evaluate the hemocompatibility of the blood pump. This study shows that compared to the closed impeller, the semi-open impeller can improve hemolysis at a slight sacrifice in head pressure, but increase the risk of thrombogenic potential and disrupt rotor dynamic balance. For the semi-open impeller, the pressure head, hemolysis, and axial thrust of the blood pump decrease with increasing front clearance, and the risk of thrombosis increases first and then decreases with increasing front clearance. Variations in back clearance have little effect on pressure head, but larger on back clearance, worsens hemolysis, thrombogenic potential and rotor dynamic balance. The employment of back vanes has little effect on the pressure head. All back vanes configurations have an increased risk of hemolysis in the blood pump but are beneficial for the improvement of the rotor dynamic balance of the blood pump. Reasonable back vanes configuration (higher height, wider width, longer length and more number) decreases the flow separation, increases the velocity of blood in the back clearance, and reduces the risk of blood pooling and thrombosis. It was also found that hemolysis index (HI) was highly negatively correlated with pressure difference between the top and back clearances (r = -.87), and thrombogenic potential was positively correlated with pressure difference between the top and back clearances (r = .71). This study found that rotor type, clearance height, and back vanes significantly affect the hydraulic performance, hemocompatibility and rotor dynamic balance of centrifugal blood pumps through secondary flow. These parameters should be carefully selected when designing and optimizing centrifugal blood pumps for improving the blood pump clinical outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Corheart 6 (Corheart) is a newly developed magnetically levitated continuous-flow left ventricular assist device currently undergoing multicenter clinical trials in China. Featuring a small size, minimal weight, and low power consumption, the Corheart aims to improve pump hemocompatibility, reduce adverse events, and enhance the quality of life of heart failure patients. METHODS Computational simulations assessed flow field, shear stress, and washout, while in vitro and in vivo experiments were performed to further demonstrate hemocompatibility. RESULTS Numerical results show that the flow path in the Corheart blood pump is well designed. There is no significantly high shear stress in the majority of the flow domain. Short secondary flow paths and small pump size (small priming volume) provide good washing (0.049 and 0.165 s to remove 55% and 95% old blood, respectively), allowing low hemolysis levels both in computational and in vitro hemolysis tests (in vitro hemolysis index ranges from 0.00092 ± 0.00006 g/100 L to 0.00134 ± 0.00019 g/100 L). Good hemocompatibility was further evidenced by ten 60-day sheep implants tested with relatively low flow rates of 2.0 ± 0.2 L/min; the results showed no hemolysis or thrombosis. CONCLUSIONS Numerical and experimental results shed light on the fluid dynamics characteristics and hemocompatibility of the Corheart. It is believed that the Corheart will provide more promising possibilities for minimally invasive implantation techniques and for those patients with a small body surface area.

Abstract
Although the demand of donor hearts for patients with end-stage heart failure is growing, its supply has remained constant. Ventricular assist devices (VADs) provide a chance of finding donor heart by increasing waiting period. In this study, the main goal is to employ an industrial method (point-by-point method) for designing blades profile with a simplified geometry which can be produced by conventional manufacturing methods. In this study, a centrifugal continuous-flow rotary pump is designed and the effects of components’ different geometries on the left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) function are investigated. Moreover, both hydraulic performance and blood damages (hemolysis index (HI)) caused by the pump are considered as design criteria. ANSYS CFX 17 is used to analyze the performance of the designed LVAD. Additionally, the geometry of components are investigated based on fulfilling the required performance of the LVAD while reducing the blood damage level. Comparing the designed VAD with the commercial ones shows that the designed blade further improves the performance of the centrifugal LVAD. Therefore, designing the impeller’s blade profile with point-by-point method seems to be promising. Simplicity in manufacturing is considered to be a big advantage for a design which also leads to lower manufacturing costs. This study demonstrates how industrial design methods can be employed to design simple-to-manufacture impellers which are suitable for LVADs.
