Structural improvement study of streamline design method, conical hub, and auxiliary blades for axial blood pump

The impact of the Impeller's hub design on the performance and blood damage in a microaxial mechanical circulatory support device - A numerical study

This study uses CFD methods to investigate the effects of the impeller's geometry on the hemodynamic characteristics, pump performance, and blood damage parameters, in a percutaneous microaxial Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) device. The numerical simulations employ the steady state Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes approximation using the SST k-ω turbulent model. Three different impeller models are examined with different hub conversion angles (α = 0○, 3○ and 5○). The analysis includes 23 cases for different pressure heads (Δp = 60-80 mmHg) and angular velocities (ω = 30-52 kRPM). The obtained flow rate is compared between the cases to assess the effect of the impeller's design and working conditions on the pump performance. The comparative risk of shear-induced platelet activation is estimated using the statistical median of the stress-accumulation values calculated along streamlines. The risk of hemolysis is estimated using the average exposure time to shear stress above a threshold (τ > 425 Pa). The results reveal that the shape of the impeller's hub has a great impact on the flow patterns, performance, and risk of blood damage, as well as the angular velocity. The highest flow rate (Q = 3.7 L/min) and efficiency (η = 11.3 %) were achieved using a straight hub (α = 0○). Similarly, for the same condition of flow and pressure, the straight hub impeller has the lowest blood damage risk parameters. This study shed light on the effect of pump design on the performance and risk of blood damage, indicating the roles of the hub shape and angular velocity as dominant parameters.

Influence of rotor impeller structure on performance improvement of suspended axial flow blood pumps

BACKGROUND

The hydrodynamic suspension structure design of the axial blood pump impeller can avoid the problems associated with using mechanical bearings. However, the particular impeller structure will impact the hydraulic performance and hemolysis of the blood pump.

METHOD

This article combines computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with the Lagrange particle tracking method, aiming to improve the blood pump's hydraulic and hemolysis performance. It analyzes the flow characteristics and hemolysis performance inside the pump. It optimizes the taper of the impeller hub, the number of blades, and the inclination angle of the circumferential groove at the top of the blade.

RESULTS

Under certain rotational speed conditions, an increase in the taper of the impeller hub or the number of blades can increase the pumping pressure of a blood pump, but an increase in the number of blades will reduce the flow rate. The design of circumferential grooves at the top of the blade can increase the pumping pressure to a certain extent, with little impact on the hemolysis performance. The impeller structure is optimized based on the estimated hemolysis of each impeller model blood pump. It could be seen that when the pump blood pressure and flow rate were reached, the optimized impeller speed was reduced by 11.4%, and the estimated hemolysis value was reduced by 10.5%.

CONCLUSION

In this paper, the rotor impeller structure of the blood pump was optimized to improve the hydraulic and hemolytic performance effectively, which can provide a reference for the related research of the axial flow blood pump using hydraulic suspension.

CFD-Based Flow Channel Optimization and Performance Prediction for a Conical Axial Maglev Blood Pump

Ventricular assist devices or total artificial hearts can be used to save patients with heart failure when there are no donors available for heart transplantation. Blood pumps are integral parts of such devices, but traditional axial flow blood pumps have several shortcomings. In particular, they cause hemolysis and thrombosis due to the mechanical contact and wear of the bearings, and they cause blood stagnation due to the separation of the front and rear guide wheel hubs and the impeller hub. By contrast, the implantable axial flow, maglev blood pump has the characteristics of no mechanical contact, no lubrication, low temperature rise, low hemolysis, and less thrombosis. Extensive studies of axial flow, maglev blood pumps have shown that these pumps can function in laminar flow, transitional flow, and turbulent flow, and the working state and performance of such pumps are determined by their support mechanisms and flow channel. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is an effective tool for understanding the physical and mechanical characteristics of the blood pump by accurately and effectively revealing the internal flow field, pressure–flow curve, and shear force distribution of the blood pump. In this study, magnetic levitation supports were used to reduce damages to the blood and increase the service life of the blood pump, and a conical impeller hub was used to reduce the speed, volume, and power consumption of the blood pump, thereby facilitating implantation. CFD numerical simulation was then carried out to optimize the structural parameters of the conical axial maglev blood pump, predict the hemolysis performance of the blood pump, and match the flow channel and impeller structure. An extracorporeal circulation simulation platform was designed to test whether the hydraulic characteristics of the blood pump met the physiological requirements. The results showed that the total pressure distribution in the blood pump was reasonable after optimization, with a uniform pressure gradient, and the hemolysis performance was improved.
