Body image of children and adolescents and its measurement: an overview

Reconceptualization of body image and drive for thinness

OBJECTIVE

This study examined the nature of body image and drive for thinness as multidimensional constructs. Subjects included 111 early adolescent (ages 11-13) girls in Grades 7 and 8 from a private school in Melbourne.

METHOD

The participants completed a suite of perceptual, affective/attitudinal, and behavioral measures that included assessment of body mass index, self-concept, body parts, silhouette discrepancy, self-worth, multidimensional body image, body image dissatisfaction, social physique anxiety, eating attitudes and behaviors, and physical activity.

RESULTS

The sample reported moderate levels of body image dissatisfaction and a significant association of body image dissatisfaction with drive for thinness. Findings verified the important contribution of the affective/attitudinal components of body image.

DISCUSSION

A multidimensional scale devised to test the value of a combined index of self-perceived size, shape, weight, tone, and appearance proved the most effective predictor among the alternative affective/attitudinal scales of body image dissatisfaction. Drive for thinness, as central to this study, was found to be related to, yet distinct from, body image on the basis of behavioral elements such as dieting and activity levels. These findings have ramifications for the design of future research in the body image, drive for thinness, and disordered eating domains. 2000 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Assessment of body perception among Swedish adolescents and young adults

PURPOSE

To assess body perception in adolescents and young adults without anorexia nervosa.

METHOD

Using a visual size estimation technique, perceived body size was estimated in four groups of Swedish adolescents and young adults without anorexia nervosa (86 males and 95 females). Perceived body size was estimated at nine different body sites comparing these estimations to real body size.

RESULTS

The results show that 95% of males and 96% of females overestimated their body size (mean overestimation: males +22%, females +33%). The overestimations were greatest in females. The greatest overestimations were made of the waist (males +31%, females +46%), buttocks (males +22%, females +42%), and thighs (males +27%, females +41%).

CONCLUSIONS

The results indicate that overestimation of body size may be a general phenomenon in adolescents and young adults in a country such as Sweden, implying a similar, but less pronounced distortion of body image as in individuals with anorexia nervosa.

Body image in obese patients before and after stable weight reduction following bariatric surgery

The role of possessing an abnormal body weight in the body image alterations of obese patients was evaluated in bariatric surgery subjects prior to and at long term after operation, when body weight and shape had become steadily normalized. Body image was assessed by the body dissatisfaction scale of the Eating Disorders Inventory, the Body Shape Questionnaire, and the Body Attitude Questionnaire. When the individuals were obese, a sharply impaired body image was observed; following operation, weight loss corresponded to normalization of body dissatisfaction, feeling of fatness, and physical attractiveness, whereas body disparagement and salience of shape, although improved in comparison to preoperative data, remained significantly different from that of controls. In the obese patients, some aspects of body image alterations are substantially accounted for by overweight status; other aspects reflect inner feelings, which are partially independent of the actual body weight and shape.

Body image in early-onset obese patients

In a group of early-onset-obesity obese patients eating behaviour, body image and psychological condition were assessed by the Eating Disorder Inventory, the Three Factor Eating Questionnaire, the Body Shape Questionnaire and the Body Attitude Questionnaire. These evaluations were carried out prior to and at long-term follow-up after biliopancreatic diversion when body weight had steadily fallen towards normal values. The aim was to establish the influence of actual body weight and shape over body image. A notable improvement in eating behaviour and overall psychological conditions was observed, while the parameters assessing body image remained substantially unchanged, indicating that early-onset-obesity postobese subjects, despite having obtained normal or nearly normal weight conditions, are still much more dissatisfied with their body weight and somatic morphology than never-obese subjects with very similar actual body weights.

Perceptions of the body interior by children with asthma and children with no known chronic disease

Comparatively little is known about how children perceive their internal bodies. In particular there is a lack of British studies, both of children's normal perceptions and in children experiencing chronic ill health. Such studies are important if information is to be given to children in the most effective way. The current study presents the results of an investigation of 72 children, 36 of whom were chronic asthma sufferers, whilst the others had no known chronic disease. Children at ages 5-6 years, 7-8 years and 10-11 years were asked to draw their internal body parts and to answer questions about the functioning of nine body organs. Data were analysed to examine the effect of age, sex and presence of asthma on the children's responses. Five-year-olds knew significantly less about their lungs than did other groups, boys identified muscle and ribs more frequently than girls, and there was an increase in levels of conceptualisation with age. There were no significant differences between asthmatic and non-asthmatic children. The findings are considered with particular reference to their importance for nursing practice.

Identification of body parts in Alzheimer's disease: evidence for a body schema hypothesis

This study examined the ability of patients with Alzheimer's Disease (AD) to perform a Body Part Identification (BPI) task, and also explored the relationship between BPI, intellectual level, severity of cognitive impairment and the general insight of patients into their disorder. The results showed that although AD patients are not always impaired on BPI, the degree of impairment correlates with the level of cognitive impairment measured using the Mini-Mental State Examination. The study also showed that BPI is not, however, associated with level of insight into their illness. Taken together these results provide support for the existence of a body schema that can be disrupted by AD, but is independent of the degree of insight into the illness.

Impaired body image of young female survivors of childhood leukemia

The purpose of this study was to assess the body image of young female survivors of leukemia. Young female survivors of leukemia (n = 42) were compared with healthy age-matched control subjects (n = 69). The study included a semistructured face-to-face interview and a psychological test. The data were separated into three distinct evaluations of each subject's body image: 1) the subject's self-assessment, 2) evaluation by a psychiatrist, and 3) the Rorschach test. The body images of the survivors were inferior to those of the control subjects in all three evaluations (P < 0.001). The preceding leukemia was assessed still as extremely threatening in 26% of the survivors.
