Mini-review of waste shell-derived materials' applications

Polymeric monolithic columns based on natural wood for rapid purification of targeted protein

With multiscale hierarchical structure, wood is suitable for a range of high-value applications, especially as a chromatographic matrix. Here, we have aimed to provide a weak anion-exchange polymeric monolithic column based on natural wood with high permeability and stability for effectively separating the targeted protein. The wood-polymeric monolithic column was synthesized by in situ polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate in wood, and coupled with diethylaminoethyl hydrochloride. The wood-polymeric monolithic column can be integrated with fast-protein liquid chromatography for large-scale protein purification. According to the results, the wood-polymeric monolithic column showed high hydrophilicity, permeability and stability. Separation experiments verified that the wood-polymeric monolithic column could purify the targeted protein (spike protein of SARS-COV-2 and ovalbumin) from the mixed proteins by ion exchange, and the static adsorption capacity was 33.04 mg mL-1 and the dynamic adsorption capacity was 24.51 mg mL-1. In addition, the wood-polymerized monolithic column had good stability, and a negligible decrease in the dynamic adsorption capacity after 20 cycles. This wood-polymerized monolithic column can provide a novel, efficient, and green matrix for monolithic chromatographic columns.

Stearate-Coated Biogenic Calcium Carbonate from Waste Seashells: A Sustainable Plastic Filler

Waste seashells from aquaculture are a massive source of biogenic calcium carbonate (bCC) that can be a potential substitute for ground calcium carbonate and precipitated calcium carbonate. These last materials find several applications in industry after a surface coating with hydrophobic molecules, with stearate as the most used. Here, we investigate for the first time the capability of aqueous stearate dispersions to coat bCC powders from seashells of market-relevant mollusc aquaculture species, namely the oyster Crassostrea gigas, the scallop Pecten jacobaeus, and the clam Chamelea gallina. The chemical-physical features of bCC were extensively characterized by different analytical techniques. The results of stearate adsorption experiments showed that the oyster shell powder, which is the bCC with a higher content of the organic matrix, showed the highest adsorption capability (about 23 wt % compared to 10 wt % of geogenic calcite). These results agree with the mechanism proposed in the literature in which stearate adsorption mainly involves the formation of calcium stearate micelles in the dispersion before the physical adsorption. The coated bCC from oyster shells was also tested as fillers in an ethylene vinyl acetate compound used for the preparation of shoe soles. The obtained compound showed better mechanical performance than the one prepared using ground calcium. In conclusion, we can state that bCC can replace ground and precipitated calcium carbonate and has a higher stearate adsorbing capability. Moreover, they represent an environmentally friendly and sustainable source of calcium carbonate that organisms produce by high biological control over composition, polymorphism, and crystal texture. These features can be exploited for applications in fields where calcium carbonate with selected features is required.

Characterization of Hydrothermally Decomposed and Synthesized CaCO3 Reinforcement from Dead Snail Shells

The development of new materials from marine resources presents a significant challenge due to the complexity of the associated materials and biology technologies. During this work, the snail shell, which naturally increases in thickness over time to protect the snail, has been identified as one of them. In this study, we investigated the use of powdered snail shells as a potential alternative to ceramics in the creation of customized composites. Our main objective is to explore the hydrothermal decomposition of the snail shell powder to remove undesirable components. To achieve this, we crushed and ground-washed dead snail shells and subjected them to hydrothermal decomposition using an autoclave and furnace at a temperature of 200, 220, 250, or 300 °C. We then analyzed the resulting samples using scanning electron microscope/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques to determine changes in their composition and structure. Our findings demonstrate that all samples contained the elements Ca, C, and O, as confirmed by SEM/EDS results. XRD results show that hydrothermal decomposition at 250 °C led to good crystallization with maximum peak intensities observed at various diffraction angles. This indicates that the resulting material may have promising properties for use in composite materials. Overall, our study provides valuable insights into the use of snail shell powder as a potential material source for customized composites. Future studies could explore the optimization of the hydrothermal decomposition process and investigate the mechanical properties of the resulting materials to further develop this promising avenue of research.

Eggshell-Derived Copper Calcium Hydroxy Double Salts and Their Activity for Treatment of Highly Polluted Wastewater

By using methyl orange (MO) removal as a model reaction, the best temperatures for processing eggshells are 750 °C and above to obtain biobased CaO materials, a raw material for producing CuCa hydroxy double salt (HDS) materials with high efficiency in treatments of highly polluted wastewater (the initial concentration of MO is 500 ppm). Characterization techniques employed in this study include power X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis, and the colorimetric method, as well as energy-dispersive X-ray, infrared-, and electron spin resonance spectroscopies. Complete MO removal and high chemical oxygen demand (COD) efficiencies (>90%) can be achieved after 3 min treatments of the aqueous MO with the calcined eggshell-derived CuCa HDS materials. The spent, deactivated HDS materials can be regenerated by an acid wash method. The activity of CuCa HDS materials in MO removal is unaffected by eggshell sources, implying that sorting steps may be unnecessary when eggshell food waste (duck, quail, and hen eggshells) is collected to produce biobased CaO. The findings of this study demonstrated that eggshells can be used in place of limestone and could be a more sustainable, renewable, and cost-effective source for material development and other applications.

Nanostructural Design of ZnO Using an Agro-Waste Extract for a Sustainable Process and Its Photocatalytic Activity

The use of agro-waste extracts (AWEs) as a sustainable medium for developing cost-effective and ecologically friendly nanomaterials has piqued the interest of current researchers. Herein, waste extracts from papaya barks, banana peels, thumba plants, and snail shells were used for synthesizing ZnO nanostructures via a hydrothermal method, followed by calcination at 400 °C. The crystallinity and pure wurtzite phase formation of ZnO nanostructures were confirmed via X-ray diffraction. ZnO nanostructures with various morphologies such as tight sheet-like, spherical, porous sheet-like, and bracket-shaped, comprising small interconnected particles with a highly catalytically active exposed (0001) facet, were observed via field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The formation mechanism of the various morphologies of the ZnO nanostructures was proposed. Ultraviolet-visible spectra showed different absorption band edges of ZnO nanostructures with a bandgap in the range of 3.17-3.27 eV. Photoluminescence studies showed the presence of various defect states such as oxygen and zinc vacancies and oxygen and zinc interstitials on ZnO nanostructures, which are usually observed in traditionally prepared ZnO. The photocatalytic activity of ZnO nanostructures was evaluated under direct sunlight using rhodamine B (RhB) and Congo red (CR) dyes as probe pollutants. Furthermore, prepared ZnO nanostructures could potentially adsorb anionic dyes (e.g., CR) in the absence of light. Superoxide and hydroxide radicals played a vital role in the photocatalytic activity of ZnO. The photocatalyst could be reused for up to three cycles, indicating its stability. Therefore, this study reports the diverse use of AWEs as cost-effective media for nanomaterial synthesis.

Biowelding 3D-Printed Biodigital Brick of Seashell-Based Biocomposite by Pleurotus ostreatus Mycelium

Mycelium biocomposites are eco-friendly, cheap, easy to produce, and have competitive mechanical properties. However, their integration in the built environment as durable and long-lasting materials is not solved yet. Similarly, biocomposites from recycled food waste such as seashells have been gaining increasing interest recently, thanks to their sustainable impact and richness in calcium carbonate and chitin. The current study tests the mycelium binding effect to bioweld a seashell biocomposite 3D-printed brick. The novelty of this study is the combination of mycelium and a non-agro-based substrate, which is seashells. As well as testing the binding capacity of mycelium in welding the lattice curvilinear form of the V3 linear Brick model (V3-LBM). Thus, the V3-LBM is 3D printed in three separate profiles, each composed of five layers of 1 mm/layer thickness, using seashell biocomposite by paste extrusion and testing it for biowelding with Pleurotus ostreatus mycelium to offer a sustainable, ecofriendly, biomineralized brick. The biowelding process investigated the penetration and binding capacity of the mycelium between every two 3D-printed profiles. A cellulose-based culture medium was used to catalyse the mycelium growth. The mycelium biowelding capacity was investigated by SEM microscopy and EDX chemical analysis of three samples from the side corner (S), middle (M), and lateral (L) zones of the biowelded brick. The results revealed that the best biowelding effect was recorded at the corner and lateral zones of the brick. The SEM images exhibited the penetration and the bridging effect achieved by the dense mycelium. The EDX revealed the high concentrations of carbon, oxygen, and calcium at all the analyzed points on the SEM images from all three samples. An inverted relationship between carbon and oxygen as well as sodium and potassium concentrations were also detected, implying the active metabolic interaction between the fungal hyphae and the seashell-based biocomposite. Finally, the results of the SEM-EDX analysis were applied to design favorable tessellation and staking methods for the V3-LBM from the seashell-mycelium composite to deliver enhanced biowelding effect along the Z axis and the XY axis with <1 mm tessellation and staking tolerance.

A sustainable one-pot method to transform seashell waste calcium carbonate to osteoinductive hydroxyapatite micro-nanoparticles

We have developed a straightforward, one-pot, low-temperature hydrothermal method to transform oyster shell waste particles (bCCP) from the species Crassostrea gigas (Mg-calcite, 5 wt% Mg) into hydroxyapatite (HA) micro/nanoparticles. The influence of the P reagents (H3PO4, KH2PO4, and K2HPO4), P/bCCP molar ratios (0.24, 0.6, and 0.96), digestion temperatures (25-200 °C), and digestion times (1 week-2 months) on the transformation process was thoroughly investigated. At 1 week, the minimum temperature to yield the full transformation significantly reduced from 160 °C to 120 °C when using K2HPO4 instead of KH2PO4 at a P/bCCP ratio of 0.6, and even to 80 °C at a P/bCCP ratio of 0.96. The transformation took place via a dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism driven by the favorable balance between HA precipitation and bCCP dissolution, due to the lower solubility product of HA than that of calcite at any of the tested temperatures. Both the bCCP and the derived HA particles were cytocompatible for MG-63 human osteosarcoma cells and m17.ASC murine mesenchymal stem cells, and additionally, they promoted the osteogenic differentiation of m17.ASC, especially the HA particles. Because of their physicochemical features and biological compatibility, both particles could be useful osteoinductive platforms for translational applications in bone tissue engineering.

Understanding Snail Mucus Biosynthesis and Shell Biomineralisation through Genomic Data Mining of the Reconstructed Carbohydrate and Glycan Metabolic Pathways of the Giant African Snail (Achatina fulica)

The giant African snail (Order Stylommatophora: Family Achatinidae), Achatina fulica (Bowdich, 1822), is the most significant and invasive land snail pest. The ecological adaptability of this snail involves high growth rate, reproductive capacity, and shell and mucus production, driven by several biochemical processes and metabolism. The available genomic information for A. fulica provides excellent opportunities to hinder the underlying processes of adaptation, mainly carbohydrate and glycan metabolic pathways toward the shell and mucus formation. The authors analysed the 1.78 Gb draft genomic contigs of A. fulica to identify enzyme-coding genes and reconstruct biochemical pathways related to the carbohydrate and glycan metabolism using a designed bioinformatic workflow. Three hundred and seventy-seven enzymes involved in the carbohydrate and glycan metabolic pathways were identified based on the KEGG pathway reference in combination with protein sequence comparison, structural analysis, and manual curation. Fourteen complete pathways of carbohydrate metabolism and seven complete pathways of glycan metabolism supported the nutrient acquisition and production of the mucus proteoglycans. Increased copy numbers of amylases, cellulases, and chitinases highlighted the snail advantage in food consumption and fast growth rate. The ascorbate biosynthesis pathway identified from the carbohydrate metabolic pathways of A. fulica was involved in the shell biomineralisation process in association with the collagen protein network, carbonic anhydrases, tyrosinases, and several ion transporters. Thus, our bioinformatic workflow was able to reconstruct carbohydrate metabolism, mucus biosynthesis, and shell biomineralisation pathways from the A. fulica genome and transcriptome data. These findings could reveal several evolutionary advantages of the A. fulica snail, and will benefit the discovery of valuable enzymes for industrial and medical applications.

Characterization of the cross-lamellar structure of Olivancillaria urceus (Gastropoda: Olividae) and its dissolution pattern

In this work, we sought to characterize the cross-lamellar microstructure of the gastropod Olivancillaria urceus (Röding, 1798) and its profile after immersion in acid medium. For crystallographic analysis, segments of the valve were removed and crushed. The powder obtained was analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy with Attenuated Total Reflectance (FTIR-ATR) and X-ray Diffractometry (XRD) techniques. For microstructural analysis, eight sections were taken from the shell using a rotary saw. The face of interest of each section was polished with Saint Gobain silicon carbide abrasive powder with mesh sizes of 320, 500, 600, and 1000. The eight sections were divided into four groups of two samples. Three groups were left in 4 % glacial acetic acid solution diluted in water for intervals of 20, 40, and 60 min, respectively, and the control group was not degraded. All wafers were then analyzed in Scanning Electron Microscopy to ascertain the microstructure. The angle and thickness of the layers were determined by Image J software. As a result of the FTIR-ATR technique, a transmittance spectrum was obtained whose valleys represent the vibrational modes of the carbonate ion. The diffractogram peaks and their respective Miller indices, are characteristic of the aragonite crystallographic structure and a small fraction of calcite. The micrographs obtained exposed 3 layers of cross-lamellar microstructure, however, the third and innermost layer showed discontinuity. The angle and average thickness were (105 ± 2)° and (727 ± 5)µm for the outermost layer and (116 ± 3)° and (668 ± 6)µm for the middle layer. The tablets immersed in acid medium showed loss of orientation of the calcium carbonate grains after 40 min and 60 min. Thus, the O. urceus shell exhibits orthorhombic calcium carbonate crystallography. Three layers of cross-lamellar microstructure were identified, as well as the configuration of the structure after contact with corrosive media. These results contribute to the characterization of natural materials and serve as a basis for analysis of the preservation potential in the fossil record.

Experimental design and field deployment of an artificial bio-reef produced by mollusk shell recycling

Shellfish farming is considered a highly sustainable form of aquaculture that has developed rapidly worldwide. Unfortunately, today biological and chemical pollution of the oceans and marine waters is widespread and has multiple negative impacts on marine ecosystems, which are exacerbated by global climate changes. In addition, such impacts on fisheries and aquaculture are significant in inducing socio-economic losses. Therefore, it is necessary to develop innovative solutions to improve productivity and environmental performance in line with the blue sustainable economy (European Green Deal). However, one upcoming problem associated with shellfish consumption is shell waste and its disposal. In addition, the percentage of wasted shells destined for reuse is much lower than the one accumulated in landfills or in more or less well-managed sites. This represents a weakness of the shellfish farming sector that can only be mitigated through a project of shellfish waste recycling moving towards the circular economy, with undoubted environmental and economic advantages. In the present study, we present a possible solution for recycling clam shells coming from the waste of the fishing industry (circular economy). Indeed, three eco-friendly bio-reefs for the stabilization and implementation of marine biodiversity (blue economy) were realized using additive manufacturing technology (3D printing) for large dimensions (technological innovation). Furthermore, before deploying the reefs on the sea bottom, they were colonized with oysters to promote repopulation.

Value-added materials recovered from waste bone biomass: technologies and applications

As the world population increases, the generation of waste bones will multiply exponentially, increasing landfill usage and posing health risks. This review aims to shed light on technologies for recovering valuable materials (e.g., alkaline earth material oxide such as CaO, hydroxyapatite, beta tri-calcium phosphate, phosphate and bone char) from waste bones, and discuss their potential applications as an adsorbent, catalyst and catalyst support, hydroxyapatite for tissue engineering, electrodes for energy storage, and phosphate source for soil remediation. Waste bone derived hydroxyapatite and bone char have found applications as a catalyst or catalyst support in organic synthesis, selective oxidation, biodiesel production, hydrocracking of heavy oil, selective hydrogenation and synthesis of bioactive compounds. With the help of this study, researchers can gather comprehensive data on studies regarding the recycling of waste bones, which will help them identify material recovery technologies and their applications in a single document. Furthermore, this work identifies areas for further research and development as well as areas for scaling-up, which will lead to reduced manufacturing costs and environmental impact. The idea behind this is to promote a sustainable environment and a circular economy concept in which waste bones are used as raw materials to produce new materials or for energy recovery.

Synthesis of CaO from waste shells for microwave-assisted catalytic pyrolysis of waste cooking oil to produce aromatic-rich bio-oil

Energy shortage and environmental pollution have attracted long-term attention. In this study, CaO were prepared from waste eggshell (EGC), preserved egg shell (PEC), clam shell (CLC) and crab shell (CRC), which were then compared with commercial CaO (CMC) to catalyze microwave-assisted pyrolysis of waste cooking oil (WCO) for enrichment of aromatics in bio-oil. The characterization results indicated that EGC and CLC contained 95.54% and 95.61% CaO respectively, which were higher than that of CMC (95.11%), and the pore properties of EGC were the best. In addition, the effects of CaO type and catalytic mode on pyrolysis were studied. In CaO catalytic pyrolysis, CMC and CLC in-situ catalysis produced more aromatics than ex-situ catalysis, and PEC and CRC were more conducive to aromatics formation in ex-situ condition. EGC was conducive to produce benzene, toluene and xylene (BTX) both in in-situ (19.04%) and ex-situ (20.76%) catalytic pyrolysis. In CaO/HZSM-5 catalysis, the optimal dual catalytic mode for generating monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) was Mode A (CaO separated from HZSM-5 for ex-situ catalysis), and EGC/HZSM-5 performed well in benzene, toluene and xylene (BTX) production.

Field study on short-term changes in benthic environment and benthic microbial communities using pyrolyzed oyster shells

To evaluate the effect of pyrolyzed crushed oyster shells (PCOS) on the remediation of sediments and microbial diversity, a field study was conducted in Buksin Bay, Tongyeong City, Republic of Korea. It was observed that after treatment with PCOS, the concentration of H₂S in the sediment of the control site was 287 mg/L. Furthermore, it decreased up to 0 mg/L and remained so until the end of the field study, that is for a period of six months. Moreover, the concentrations of NO₂-N + NO₃-N, NH₄-N, and PO₄-P decreased sharply, and the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) increased after PCOS treatment in pore water and overlying water. Regarding the diversity of microbial communities, the predominance of bacteria from phylum Chlorobi was observed in highly reduced (-410 mV; ORP) sediment, which is well known for the production of H₂S. After PCOS treatment, the relative abundance of Chlorobi was sharply suppressed. On the other hand, the predominance of bacteria from the phyla Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes was observed, and their relative abundance in the PCOS-treated sediment increased throughout the experiment, based on 16S rRNA sequencing. The results demonstrate that the abundance of bacterial communities in the PCOS-treated sediments of Buksin Bay is important for marine ecological functioning, especially for pollutant transformation.

Mechanical, Leaching, and Microstructure Properties of Mine Waste Rock Reinforced and Stabilised with Waste Oyster Shell for Road Subgrade Use

Two waste materials, oyster shell (NCOS; non-calcined oyster shell as coarse aggregate and COSP; calcined oyster shell powder as total and partial cement replacement) are used to reinforce and stabilise poorly graded and heavy metal-contaminated mine waste rock (MWR) for pavement subgrade use. Mechanical, leaching, and microstructural tests and analysis were performed on reinforced and stabilised samples to evaluate the effectiveness of the reinforcement and stabilisation of the MWR. Experimental results revealed NCOS and COSP improved the mechanical, leaching, and microstructural properties of the stabilised composite, with a 5% cement–15% COSP–15% NCOS mix being optimal when compared to the control mixes of cement only and no- NCOS. Higher COSP contents beyond 10% reduced the heavy metal contents significantly, but with relatively lower unconfined compressive strengths. Microstructural test results revealed the formation of calcium silicate hydrate (CSH), calcium aluminium silicate hydrate (CASH), ettringite, and calcite as the stabilisation products. Heavy metal complexes in both the cement-only and cement–NCOS–COSP mixes were also found. It is concluded that NCOS reinforced and improved the grading of poorly graded MWR, and that COSP stabilised and immobilised heavy metals present in MWR, thereby improving strength and other engineering properties for subgrade use.

Synthesis of Natural Nano-Hydroxyapatite from Snail Shells and Its Biological Activity: Antimicrobial, Antibiofilm, and Biocompatibility

Hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HAn) have been produced as biomaterial from biowaste, especially snail shells (Atactodea glabrata). It is critical to recycle the waste product in a biomedical application to overcome antibiotic resistance as well as biocompatibility with normal tissues. Moreover, EDX, TEM, and FT-IR analyses have been used to characterize snail shells and HAn. The particle size of HAn is about 15.22 nm. Furthermore, higher inhibitory activity was observed from HAn than the reference compounds against all tested organisms. The synthesized HAn has shown the lowest MIC values of about 7.8, 0.97, 3.9, 0.97, and 25 µg/mL for S. aureus, B. subtilis, K. pneumonia, C. albicans, and E. coli, respectively. In addition, the HAn displayed potent antibiofilm against S. aureus and B. subtilis. According to the MTT, snail shell and HAn had a minor influence on the viability of HFS-4 cells. Consequently, it could be concluded that some components of waste, such as snail shells, have economic value and can be recycled as a source of CaO to produce HAn, which is a promising candidate material for biomedical applications.

Sustainable alternatives for by-products derived from industrial mussel processing: A critical review

The industrial mussel processing generates significant quantities of waste. Nearly 30% of one metric tonne of processed mussel is finally destined for human consumption. Regardless of the mussel commodities, an important quantity of waste is concentrated at several sub-processes, such as input reception, washing and declumping shells, and mussel meat extraction stages, or by means of the rejection of mussels only due to a size characteristic criterion established by the target market. Despite the main segregated waste comprising shells, byssus threads, residual meat and wastewater, a heterogeneous composition must be taken into account, since much of the solid waste is commonly gathered and compacted for landfill transportation purposes. This paper reviews the sustainable management strategies for mussel by-products, addressing their limitations for an industrial implementation to obtain value-added products. It is concluded that, although there is a well-known diversity of waste sustainable management alternatives, several proposed products (e.g., collagen, bio-adhesives, biopolymer, and adsorbent for pollutants) still remain in a potential framework, circumscribed into laboratory results, subject to an optimization process, to a validation by industrial pre-scale trials, or even limited by the associated production costs. Future researches should focus on reducing the uncertainties linked with their technical-economic feasibility for an industrial scale development.

Assessment of Corrosion Performance of Steel Rebar in Snail Shell Ash Blended Cements under Marine Environments

An attempt has been made on a constructive approach to evaluate the performance of snail shell ash (SSA) for its corrosion performance under marine environments. Corrosion performance of steel rebar in chloride-contaminated SSA with (0% to 50%) replacement levels of cement extract medium was examined through electrochemical and weight loss techniques. Initially, snail shell powder (SSP) is made by pulverizing and subsequently SSA is by thermal decomposition methods. Both SSP and SSA were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy. Concrete cubes with 0% to 50% replacement levels of cement by SSA were evaluated for their mechanical properties. A critical level of 20 to 30% SSA improved both corrosion resistance and strength of concrete. Extrapolation modeling for the strength and corrosion rate with respect to later age were made. SSA is a suitable replacement material for natural limestone in cement productions.

Yield Response from the Catalytic Conversion of Parsley Seed Oil into Biodiesel Using a Heterogeneous and Homogeneous Catalyst

This research work is focused on the investigation of the optimum condition for parsley seed oil (PSO) trans-esterification using a heterogeneous (CCB) and homogenous catalyst (KOH). The process parameters (alcohol: oil ratio, temperature, and catalyst loading) were varied to examine their effect on the percentage biodiesel yield using a Box-Behnken design embedded with the response surface methodology (RSM). Also, the heterogeneous catalyst was synthesized by calcining waste chicken bones at 900 °C for 4 h. Thereafter, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were utilized to determine the morphology and elemental composition. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was also adopted to assess the effect of calcination temperature on the prepared catalyst. The characterization analysis revealed the presence of hydroxyapatite as the major component, and the reusability test showed that it exhibited good catalytic performance for PSO transesterification. However, the optimization study revealed that the optimum reaction conditions of 9:1 alcohol: ratio, 60 °C reaction temperature, and 3 wt % catalysts gave 90% biodiesel yield, while the homogenous catalyst (used as the control transesterification experiment) under the same conditions gave an average yield of 96.33%. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was utilized to characterize the produced biodiesel. Furthermore, the fuel characteristics of biodiesel were within the specifications of the ASTM D6751.

In Vitro Degradation and Cytotoxicity of Eggshell-Based Hydroxyapatite: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

OBJECTIVE

This review focuses on the in vitro degradation of eggshell-based hydroxyapatite for analyzing the weight loss of hydroxyapatite when applied in the human body. Cytotoxicity tests were used to observe cell growth and morphological effects. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to observe the weight loss and viable cells of hydroxyapatite when used for implants.

METHOD

Based on the Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome (PICO) strategy, the articles used for literature review were published in English on SCOPUS, PubMed, and Google Scholar from 1 January 2012 to 22 May 2021. Data regarding existing experiments in the literature articles the in vitro degradation and cytotoxicity testing of eggshell-based hydroxyapatite determined the biocompatibility of the materials. A meta-analysis was conducted to calculate the mean difference between the solutions and soaking times used for degradation and the stem cells used for cytotoxicity.

RESULTS

From 231 relevant studies, 71 were chosen for full-text analysis, out of which 33 articles met the inclusion criteria for degradation and cytotoxicity analysis. A manual search of the field of study resulted in three additional articles. Thus, 36 articles were included in this systematic review.

SIGNIFICANCE

The aim of this study was to highlight the importance of the biocompatibility of eggshell-based hydroxyapatite. The weight loss and viability cells of eggshell-based hydroxyapatite showed optimum results for viable cells requirements above 70%, and there is a weight loss of eggshell-based hydroxyapatite for a material implant. The meta-analysis indicated significant differences in the weight loss of eggshell-based hydroxyapatite materials with different soaking times and solutions used. The various kinds of stem cells for incubation of cultured cells in contact with a device, either directly or through diffusions with various kinds of stem cells from animals and humans, yielded viability cells above 70%.

Physicochemical Characteristics of Chicken Eggshell Flour Produced by Hydrochloric Acid and Acetic Acid Extraction

Backgrdound: Several previous researchers have prepared chicken eggshell flour using hydrochloric acid (HCl) and acetic acid (CH3COOH) solvents. However, the results of the physicochemical characteristics still very diverse. This study aims to produce chicken eggshell flour using two different types of solvents (4% HCl and CH3COOH 2N) and determine the proper solvent to obtain better physicochemical characteristics. Method: This type of research was descriptive quantitative. The research stages initiated by preparing chicken eggshell samples by maceration using 4% HCl and CH3COOH 2N. Afterward, chemical characteristics (moisture content, ash, calcium carbonate, calcium, and phosphorus) and physical characteristics (yield) of eggshell flour were determined. Processing and data conducted by using the IBM SPSS statistic program Result: The higher levels of calcium, calcium carbonate, phosphorus, ash, yield, and lower water content of the eggshell powder were generated by extraction using 4% HCl than 2N acetic acid (CH3COOH). Conclusion: The physicochemical characteristics of the eggshell powder extracted from the 4% HCl were better than the 2N acetic acid (CH3COOH)

Progress on Modified Calcium Oxide Derived Waste-Shell Catalysts for Biodiesel Production

The dwindling of global petroleum deposits and worsening environmental issues have triggered researchers to find an alternative energy such as biodiesel. Biodiesel can be produced via transesterification of vegetable oil or animal fat with alcohol in the presence of a catalyst. A heterogeneous catalyst at an economical price has been studied widely for biodiesel production. It was noted that various types of natural waste shell are a potential calcium resource for generation of bio-based CaO, with comparable chemical characteristics, that greatly enhance the transesterification activity. However, CaO catalyzed transesterification is limited in its stability and studies have shown deterioration of catalytic reactivity when the catalyst is reused for several cycles. For this reason, different approaches are reviewed in the present study, which focuses on modification of waste-shell derived CaO based catalyst with the aim of better transesterification reactivity and high reusability of the catalyst for biodiesel production. The catalyst stability and leaching profile of the modified waste shell derived CaO is discussed. In addition, a critical discussion of the structure, composition of the waste shell, mechanism of CaO catalyzed reaction, recent progress in biodiesel reactor systems and challenges in the industrial sector are also included in this review.

State-of-the-Art of Eggshell Waste in Materials Science: Recent Advances in Catalysis, Pharmaceutical Applications, and Mechanochemistry

Eggshell waste is among the most abundant waste materials coming from food processing technologies. Despite the unique properties that both its components (eggshell, ES, and eggshell membrane, ESM) possess, it is very often discarded without further use. This review article aims to summarize the recent reports utilizing eggshell waste for very diverse purposes, stressing the need to use a mechanochemical approach to broaden its applications. The most studied field with regards to the potential use of eggshell waste is catalysis. Upon proper treatment, it can be used for turning waste oils into biodiesel and moreover, the catalytic effect of eggshell-based material in organic synthesis is also very beneficial. In inorganic chemistry, the eggshell membrane is very often used as a templating agent for nanoparticles production. Such composites are suitable for application in photocatalysis. These bionanocomposites are also capable of heavy metal ions reduction and can be also used for the ozonation process. The eggshell and its membrane are applicable in electrochemistry as well. Due to the high protein content and the presence of functional groups on the surface, ESM can be easily converted to a high-performance electrode material. Finally, both ES and ESM are suitable for medical applications, as the former can be used as an inexpensive Ca2+ source for the development of medications, particles for drug delivery, organic matrix/mineral nanocomposites as potential tissue scaffolds, food supplements and the latter for the treatment of joint diseases, in reparative medicine and vascular graft producing. For the majority of the above-mentioned applications, the pretreatment of the eggshell waste is necessary. Among other options, the mechanochemical pretreatment has found an inevitable place. Since the publication of the last review paper devoted to the mechanochemical treatment of eggshell waste, a few new works have appeared, which are reviewed here to underline the sustainable character of the proposed methodology. The mechanochemical treatment of eggshell is capable of producing the nanoscale material which can be further used for bioceramics synthesis, dehalogenation processes, wastewater treatment, preparation of hydrophobic filters, lithium-ion batteries, dental materials, and in the building industry as cement.

Microstructure Analysis and Chemical and Mechanical Characterization of the Shells of Three Freshwater Snails

The shells of freshwater snails are discarded as waste, which qualify as biological materials with prospective multiple uses. To substantiate this proposition, an attempt was made to elucidate the physical and chemical properties of the shells of three freshwater snails, namely, Bellamya bengalensis, Pila globosa, and Brotia costula. The shells were prepared for electron microscopy and assessment of the calcium carbonate content, apart from the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and nanoindentation studies. The results indicated that the calcium carbonate content (y) of the shells ranged between 87 and 96% of the total weight (x) and complied with a power regression equation: y = 0.801x 1.016; R 2 = 0.994; r = +0.998; P < 0.001. Observations through SEM depicted different snail species-specific arrangement patterns of calcium carbonate crystals in the diverse layers of shells. The XRD, FTIR, and EDS observations revealed the dominance of the aragonite form of the calcium carbonate crystal in the microstructures of each snail shell with the occurrence of different shell surface functional groups. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis elucidated the surface textures of shell dust taken from each snail species; in addition, the nanohardness properties indicate the shells as a tough biocomposite exoskeleton. Species-specific variations in the shell morphology, microstructure, and calcium carbonate content were prominent for the three freshwater snails considered for the study. Nonetheless, the physical and chemical properties substantiate that the shells of B. bengalensis, P. globosa, and B. costula qualify as biological materials for sustainable use in various fields including bioremediation, biocatalyst, biomedical applications, and a source of lime. Since the shells of the freshwater snails are discarded as aquaculture waste, subsequent use as a biological material will support the "waste made useful" paradigm in sustainability, both from ecological and economic perspectives.

Progress of Bio-Calcium Carbonate Waste Eggshell and Seashell Fillers in Polymer Composites: A Review

Disposal of massive amounts of eggshells and seashells from processing industries is a challenge. In recent years, there has been a focus to reuse these waste resources in the production of new thermoplastic and thermoset polymer materials. This paper reviews eggshell and seashell production by country and provides a perspective on the quantity of bio-calcium carbonate that could be produced annually from these wastes. The achievements obtained from the addition of recycled bio-calcium carbonate fillers (uncoated/unmodified) in polymer composites with a focus on tensile strength, flexural strength and impact toughness are discussed. To improve compatibility between calcium carbonate (mineral and bio-based) fillers and polymers, studies on surface modifiers are reviewed. Knowledge gaps and future research and development thoughts are outlined. Developing novel and innovative composites for this waste material could bring additional revenue to egg and seafood processors and at the same time reduce any environmental impact.

An insight into the structure, composition and hardness of a biological material: the shell of freshwater mussels

The shell of the freshwater mussel (Mollusca: Bivalvia) is a composite biological material linked with multifunctional roles in sustaining ecosystem services. Apart from providing mechanical strength and support, the shell is an important site for adherence and growth of multiple types of algae and periphyton. Variations in the shell architecture are observed in the mussels both within a species and among different species. Considering the prospective utility of the shell of the freshwater mussels as a biological material, an assessment of the shell characteristics was accomplished using Corbicula bensoni and Lamellidens marginalis as model species. The calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) content of the shells, physical features and mechanical strength were assessed along with the morphometric analysis. The CaCO₃ content of the shell (upto 95% to 96% of the shell weight) of both the mussels was positively correlated with the shell length, suggesting increased deposition of CaCO₃ in shells with the growth of the species. The cross sectioned views of FE-SEM images of the shells exhibited distinct layered structure with external periostracum and inner nacreous layer varying distinctly. In the growing region, the growth line was prominent in the mussel shells revealed through the FESEM images. In addition XRD, FTIR and EDS studies on the mussel shells confirmed the existence of both aragonite and calcite forms of the calcium carbonate crystals with the incidence of various functional groups. The mechanical strength of the mussel shells was explored through nanoindentation experiments, revealed significant strength at the nanoparticle level of the shells. It was apparent from the results that the shell of the freshwater mussel L. marginalis and C. bensoni qualify as a biological material with prospective multiple applications for human well-being and sustaining environmental quality.
