Determinants of Work-Related Quality of Life in French Anesthesiologists

BACKGROUND

Little evidence is available regarding work-related quality of life (WRQoL) for anesthesiologists. We aimed to explore factors associated with WRQoL among French anesthesiologists.

METHODS

The study surveyed French anesthesiologists qualified for more than 2 years. The primary objective was the determination of factors associated with WRQoL. Factors analyzed included demographic characteristics, lifestyle, financial status, personality traits, professional relations, management and organization, and occupational tasks when at work. Statistical analyses were performed using a multivariable quantile regression model.

RESULTS

Overall, 2040 anesthesiologists responded to the survey and 1922 responses were analyzed. The latter represents 19% of practicing French anesthesiologists. The following factors were independently associated with increased WRQoL: family income, long-term employment, organizational and managerial factors (lesser weekly workload, the belief of providing high quality, safe health care services, team management, and operating theatre organization), human relations (satisfaction with workplace ambiance and relations with hospital management and colleagues), and occupational tasks (participation in team activities). Three personality traits were found to be significantly associated with increased WRQoL: extraversion, conscientiousness, and openness. Neuroticism was associated with reduced WRQoL.

CONCLUSIONS

The current study demonstrates exogenous and endogenous factors associated with increased WRQoL in anesthesiologists. Results should be considered as explorative and provide hypotheses for further research in this domain.

Quality of nursing work life and related factors among emergency nurses in Jordan

OBJECTIVES

The objective of this study is to assess quality of nursing work life (QNWL) and related factors among nurses working in emergency room (ER).

METHODS

A cross-sectional descriptive design was employed. Data were collected from a convenient sample of nurses working in ER Eligible participants were required to complete a demographic and work related variables sheet, the Brooks Quality of Nursing Work Survey (BQNWLS).

RESULTS

A total of (186) nurses participated in the study. Study participants reported a BQNWL mean score of (M = 140.15, SD = 28.34) indicating a moderate BQNWL. Additionally, the participants scored moderate levels on all BQNWL subscales. The mean score of BQNWL was statistically better for nurses who had training courses on emergency department (t = -2.663, P = 0.008). However, no other statistically significant differences were found in BQNWL scores in regarding to demographic and work related variables.

CONCLUSION

The results of this study reported a noticeable alteration in QNWL among nurses working in ER. The nurses had a moderate QNWL levels. Also, the results emphasized on the importance of conducting further interventional research studies in the future to establish effective measures to enhance nurse QNWL. Consequently, this may improve the provided nursing care for the patients and their families.

Validity and Reliability of Quality of Nursing Work Life Instrument for Hospital Nurses

Introduction: The validity and reliability of the quality of nursing work life (QNWL) instrument in hospitals that suitable to treatment needs include: trust, care, respect, learn, and contribute need, have to be assessed. Therefore, in order to perform good care, it is necessary to notice QNWL aspect, which the implementation may be assessed by using valid and reliable instruments. This study aimed to evaluate the construct validity of the QNWL scale in hospital.Methods:  The research used a cross-sectional approach and the respondents were 100 experts in nursing and 400 nurses working in four hospitals in Gresik, Indonesia, who have been working for minimum one year. The sampling technique was purposive sampling. We analyzed the data using content analysis, the validity of item discrimination using Pearson products moment, reliability with Cronbach’s alpha, and construct validity with Confirmatory Factor Analysis.Results: The results based on content validity index QNWL instrument was 0.2075-0.915, with an average 0.7059 (high). Item discrimination capacity was 0.339-0.79 (high), while the reliability was 0.9374 (very high) and the validity of the construct meets the goodness of fit criteria.Conclusion: All constructs are able to explain and support the QNWL instrument model. This research can be used to measure the quality of work life of nurses in all classes of hospitals in Indonesia.

Determinants of Quality of Work Life among Nurses Working in Hawassa Town Public Health Facilities, South Ethiopia: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background

A high quality of work life (QWL) is a crucial issue for health care facilities to have qualified, dedicated, and inspired employees. Among different specialties in health care settings, nurses have a major share among other health care providers. So, they should experience a better QWL to deliver high-quality holistic care to those who need help.

Objective

To assess the level of quality of work life and its predictors among nurses working in Hawassa town public health facilities, South Ethiopia.

Methods

A facility based cross-sectional study was conducted on 253 nurses of two hospitals and nine health centers. The total sample size was allocated to each facility based on the number of nurses in each facility. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The interitem consistency of the scale used to measure QWL had Cronbach's alpha value of 0.86. A multinomial logistic regression model was fitted to identify significant predictors of quality of work life using SPSS version 20.

Results

The study showed that 67.2% of the nurses were dissatisfied with the quality of their work life. We found that educational status, monthly income, working unit, and work environment were strong predictors of quality of work life among nurses (p < 0.05).

Conclusion

Significant proportions of the nurses were dissatisfied with the quality of their work life. The findings in this study and studies reported from elsewhere pinpoint that perception of nurses about the quality of their work life can be modified if health care managers are considerate of the key issues surrounding QWL.

Nurses are reported to have higher illness, disability, and absenteeism rates than all other health care workers. Research suggests that QOWL impacts nurses' health and the provision of quality health care, particularly patient safety. Occupational health nurses have a pivotal role in evaluating and improving nurses' QOWL and health. This will ensure quality health outcomes for nurses and patients and reduce costs for the health care system.

Quality of work life among primary health care nurses in the Jazan region, Saudi Arabia: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Quality of work life (QWL) is defined as the extent to which an employee is satisfied with personal and working needs through participating in the workplace while achieving the goals of the organization. QWL has been found to influence the commitment and productivity of employees in health care organizations, as well as in other industries. However, reliable information on the QWL of primary health care (PHC) nurses is limited. The purpose of this study was to assess the QWL among PHC nurses in the Jazan region, Saudi Arabia.

METHODS

A descriptive research design, namely a cross-sectional survey, was used in this study. Data were collected using Brooks' survey of quality of nursing work life and demographic questions. A convenience sample was recruited from 134 PHC centres in Jazan, Saudi Arabia. The Jazan region is located in the southern part of Saudi Arabia. A response rate of 91% (n = 532/585) was achieved (effective response rate = 87%, n = 508). Data analysis consisted of descriptive statistics, t-test and one way-analysis of variance. Total scores and subscores for QWL items and item summary statistics were computed and reported using SPSS version 17 for Windows.

RESULTS

Findings suggested that the respondents were dissatisfied with their work life. The major influencing factors were unsuitable working hours, lack of facilities for nurses, inability to balance work with family needs, inadequacy of vacations time for nurses and their families, poor staffing, management and supervision practices, lack of professional development opportunities, and an inappropriate working environment in terms of the level of security, patient care supplies and equipment, and recreation facilities (break-area). Other essential factors include the community's view of nursing and an inadequate salary. More positively, the majority of nurses were satisfied with their co-workers, satisfied to be nurses and had a sense of belonging in their workplaces. Significant differences were found according to gender, age, marital status, dependent children, dependent adults, nationality, nursing tenure, organizational tenure, positional tenure, and payment per month. No significant differences were found according to education level of PHC nurses and location of PHC.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings can be used by PHC managers and policy makers for developing and appropriately implementing successful plans to improve the QWL. This will help to enhance the home and work environments, improve individual and organization performance and increase the commitment of nurses.

The relationship between quality of work life and turnover intention of primary health care nurses in Saudi Arabia

Background

Quality of work life (QWL) has been found to influence the commitment of health professionals, including nurses. However, reliable information on QWL and turnover intention of primary health care (PHC) nurses is limited. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between QWL and turnover intention of PHC nurses in Saudi Arabia.

Methods

A cross-sectional survey was used in this study. Data were collected using Brooks’ survey of Quality of Nursing Work Life, the Anticipated Turnover Scale and demographic data questions. A total of 508 PHC nurses in the Jazan Region, Saudi Arabia, completed the questionnaire (RR = 87%). Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, General Linear Model (GLM) univariate analysis, standard multiple regression, and hierarchical multiple regression were applied for analysis using SPSS v17 for Windows.

Results

Findings suggested that the respondents were dissatisfied with their work life, with almost 40% indicating a turnover intention from their current PHC centres. Turnover intention was significantly related to QWL. Using standard multiple regression, 26% of the variance in turnover intention was explained by QWL, p < 0.001, with R² = .263. Further analysis using hierarchical multiple regression found that the total variance explained by the model as a whole (demographics and QWL) was 32.1%, p < 0.001. QWL explained an additional 19% of the variance in turnover intention, after controlling for demographic variables.

Conclusions

Creating and maintaining a healthy work life for PHC nurses is very important to improve their work satisfaction, reduce turnover, enhance productivity and improve nursing care outcomes.
