Parse's theory of human becoming in practice with hospitalized adolescents

This article demonstrates the use of Parse's theory of human becoming in the care of hospitalized adolescents and their families. The practice dimensions of the theory are described and scenarios from nursing practice serve to illustrate the usefulness of the theory with the adolescent population. Strengths and limitations of the theory are discussed within the context of nursing practice.

Assessing psychosexual concerns in adults with diabetes: pilot project using Roy's modes of adaptation

This pilot project was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the modes of adaptation described by Roy as a framework for assessing psychosexual concerns of adults with diabetes mellitus. A structured interview guide with questions that elicited information in physiologic, self-concept, role function, and interdependence modes was used to interview 10 hospitalized men and women with diabetes. Findings from the study are presented. Limitations in the interview guide are identified and recommendations for refinement and further development of the guide to elicit more specific information and to more clearly separate responses into discrete modes are discussed.

Applying the Roy Adaptation Model to the care of clients with quadriplegia

The Roy Adaptation Model has provided a framework for nursing practice, education, and research for more than 20 years. This article focuses on the model's contribution to nursing practice. Adaptation, the goal of the model, serves as an effective guide for planning care for the client with quadriplegia. A case study is used to show the effectiveness of using the nursing process within the guidelines of the Roy Adaptation Model to promote adaptation in a client with quadriplegia who is coping with living in a long-term care facility.

Using Roy's adaptation model in practice: nurses' perspectives

Using a qualitative research methodology, the utility of the Roy adaptation model as a framework for nursing practice within a hospital setting was investigated. The level of integration of the model into practice varied among nurses. The model was generally found to be useful in focusing, organizing, and directing nurses' thoughts and actions regarding patient care, resulting in a perception of improved quality of nursing process and patient outcomes. Prior education on the Roy model and participation in professional advancement activities facilitated model integration, while lack of education and resistance to change inhibited implementation of model-based practice.

Nursing models and community as client

Each of the four nursing frameworks discussed here represents worldviews that result in different meanings of the concepts of health, community, and, therefore, of community health. Orem's framework reflects a casual model of the community as an aggregate of individuals and a concept of health that is most akin to Smith's clinical and functional levels of health. Roy's model broadens to allow for consideration of the community as a system. The community as a system is perceived from the perspective of behaviors in response to stimuli. Causality is time ordered and linear, although one must consider the context of continuing time through the mechanism of feedback loops. Smith's adaptive level of health is most congruent with this perspective. King's conceptual framework views the community as a system interacting with the personal and interpersonal systems it includes. Causality is necessarily symmetrical within a systems approach. Health includes both role performance and adaptive levels of health. Finally, Rogers' model considers the community as a field in itself. That field is one of awareness, is integral with the environmental field, and is acausal in nature. Health as expanding awareness is most similar to Smith's eudaimonistic concept of health. It is proposed that these four frameworks reflect increasingly integrated conceptions of community health by which to guide public health/community health nursing practice.
