Abstract
BACKGROUND Academic detailing is an educational outreach approach to disseminate evidence-based information to health care professionals and improve clinical decision making. Pharmacists and physicians are recognized as the most qualified individuals to perform academic detailing; however, trained student pharmacists may also serve as suitable academic detailers. OBJECTIVES To describe our academic detailing intervention that used trained student pharmacists to disseminate an updated pneumococcal vaccination clinical pathway (i.e., decision-support tool) and education to community pharmacists in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. METHODS We updated an academic detailing initiative that included a pneumococcal vaccination clinical pathway and education for community pharmacists in 2021. Two University of Rhode Island (URI) College of Pharmacy pharmacist faculty members trained 6 student pharmacists to perform academic detailing. Student pharmacists visited URI-affiliated community pharmacies throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts. After each session, each participant received a 6-question anonymous paper survey to assess the effectiveness of the updated pathway and academic detailing session. The survey used a 5-point Likert-type scale. We assessed the percentage agreement with each question. RESULTS Academic detailing was delivered to 76 community pharmacists from May to August 2021. Most respondents agreed (89.2%, 58/65) that their knowledge of which patient populations met eligibility for the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine or pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine improved. Respondents were confident they could apply the knowledge gained (93.8%, 61/65) and intended to apply the pathway (93.8%, 61/65) to clinical practice. Most respondents expected vaccination practices to change because of the academic detailing and education materials received (83.6%, 51/61). Almost all respondents (95.4%, 62/65) found the educational materials easy to understand. CONCLUSION Trained student pharmacists can deliver academic detailing regarding adult pneumococcal vaccination to community pharmacists. Enlisting the help of student pharmacists may be a sustainable approach to academic detailing and provides students with valuable opportunities to practice delivering educational outreach to community pharmacists.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Smoking rates in the United States are the highest in underserved rural regions. Thus, more points of contact are needed to link smokers to evidence-based cessation programs. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to conduct an evaluation to determine the feasibility, acceptability, and interest among rural pharmacists in implementing a pharmacist-facilitated smoking cessation program in independent community pharmacies in rural Appalachian communities in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia. METHODS This study utilized a complementary sequential mixed-methods approach to explore independent community pharmacists and technicians' experiences and beliefs about implementing a tobacco cessation program in their pharmacy. RESULTS There were 49 pharmacists or technicians who completed the survey and 7 pharmacists who participated in the interviews. Four main findings emerged from the data: 1) pharmacies can help fill the gap in tobacco cessation services in rural communities, 2) under current practice, tobacco cessation resources when offered by independent community pharmacies are not always formalized, 3) there are known barriers, such as reimbursing for services, that need to be addressed to provide tobacco cessation in an independent pharmacy setting, and 4) the Ask-Advise-Connect model is a feasible tobacco cessation approach in a pharmacy. CONCLUSION Although pharmacists may be ideally situated to build capacity for smoking cessation in rural areas, smoking cessation interventions need to use existing approaches that compensate pharmacists for their time spent counseling patients. Furthermore, simple documentation and billing systems are needed to maximize utilization of tobacco cessation products and services provided in the pharmacy.

Background: Advice from health care professionals (HCPs) is critical for tobacco prevention and cessation efforts. The academic curricula for health care professional students (HCS) lack comprehensive training in assisting patients in tobacco cessation. Tobacco use among HCP’s deters them from giving proper tobacco prevention and cessation guidance. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and determinants of tobacco consumption in third-year students of four health care disciplines (medical, dental, pharmacy, and nursing) and to assess their undergraduate education on tobacco control and cessation. Methods: A web-based survey (response rate 84.4%) employing the Global Health Professions Student Survey (GHPSS) questionnaire; n= 838; [20.89 (SD± 0.94) years] was conducted in Mysore, India. A descriptive, comparative and multivariate analysis was performed. Results: The number of students who received formal training in smoking cessation approaches was only 14.04%. In total, two-thirds of medical students, compared to 38.9% of dental, 29.7% of pharmacy, and 11.40 % of nursing students, learned “the reasons why people smoke” as a part of their formal training. However, only less than a quarter of the study population were aware of the role of antidepressants in nicotine cessation medications. The total prevalence of tobacco use was 28.9%. A total of 37.72% wanted to quit smoking, while a mere 1.2% had sought any professional help to do so. Conclusions: Tobacco use in HCS, apart from personal health risks to themselves, may potentially affect their future commitment to support patients in tobacco cessation. There is a need for further research into tobacco prevention and cessation programs tailored to the needs of student groups. There is a need for an updated curriculum for tobacco cessation strategies and more research into better cessation strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pharmacists are critical to public health in supporting safe use of prescription opioids by ensuring that all patients are offered and counseled on naloxone. Academic detailing may be an effective educational outreach strategy for improving pharmacists' knowledge and behavior related to naloxone. OBJECTIVE To describe an academic detailing program to pharmacists on the topic of counseling and promoting naloxone to patients. METHODS Pharmacists were recruited by convenience sampling. Three pharmacists who were experienced with academic detailing techniques provided the education. Survey data were collected to evaluate the program. RESULTS Thirty-three pharmacists participated, including 16 sessions that were delivered virtually. The pharmacists worked in a variety of ambulatory settings, including chain or corporate-owned pharmacies (58%), hospital-owned specialty pharmacies (15%), hospital-owned community pharmacies (15%), and independently owned or other pharmacies (12%). Twenty-eight pharmacists (85%) completed an immediate post-session evaluation survey. Twenty-seven pharmacists (96%) indicated they felt the information presented will impact their practice or patient care. Eleven pharmacists (33%) completed a second post-session survey, self-reporting improvements related to counseling patients about naloxone. CONCLUSION Participating in academic detailing supports community pharmacists' providing patient counseling about naloxone. Further study, particularly related to virtual academic detailing, is necessary to understand the full potential of academic detailing to pharmacists.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Health professionals play an important role in providing advice to their patients about tobacco prevention and cessation. Health professionals who use tobacco may be deterred from providing cessation advice and counselling to their patients. We aimed to provide prevalence estimates of tobacco use among student health professionals and describe their attitudes towards tobacco cessation training. METHODS Country-wise aggregate data from the Global Health Professions Student Survey on 'current cigarette smoking' (smoking cigarettes on 1 or more days during the past 30 days), and 'current use of tobacco products other than cigarettes' (chewing tobacco, snuff, bidis, cigars or pipes, 1 or more days during the past 30 days) were analysed. For each WHO region, we estimated mean prevalence rates of tobacco use weighted by the population of the sampling frame and aggregate proportions for 'health professionals' role' and 'cessation training' indicators using 'metaprop' command on Stata V.11. RESULTS A total of 107 527 student health professionals participated in 236 surveys done in four health profession disciplines spanning 70 countries with response rates ranging from 40% to 100%. Overall, prevalence of smoking was highest in European countries (20% medical and 40% dental students) and the Americas (13% pharmacy to 23% dental students). Other tobacco use was higher in eastern Mediterranean (10%-23%) and European countries (7%-13%). In most WHO regions, ≥70% of the students agreed that health professionals are role models, and have a role in advising about smoking cessation to their patients and the public. Only ≤33% of all student health professionals in most WHO regions (except 80% dental students in the Eastern Mediterranean region) had received formal training on smoking cessation approaches and ≥80% of all students agreed that they should receive formal cessation training. CONCLUSIONS Tobacco control should take place together with medical educators to discourage tobacco use among student health professionals and implement an integrated smoking cessation training into health professions' curricula.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Little is known about attitudes of pharmacists and consumers to pharmacy naloxone. We examined perceptions and experiences of pharmacy naloxone from people with opioid use disorder, patients taking chronic opioids for pain, caregivers of opioid users, and pharmacists from 2 early pharmacy naloxone adopter states: Massachusetts and Rhode Island. DESIGN Eight focus groups (4 per state) were held in October to December 2015. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Participants were recruited from pharmacies, health clinics, and community organizations; pharmacists were recruited from professional organizations and pharmacy colleges. OUTCOME MEASURES Focus groups were led by trained qualitative researchers using a topic guide, and recorded and transcribed for analysis. Five analysts developed and applied a coding scheme to transcripts. Thematic analysis involved synthesis of coded data and connections between key themes, with comparisons across the groups. RESULTS Sixty-one participants included patients with chronic pain (n = 15), people with opioid use disorders (n = 19), caregivers (n = 16), and pharmacists (n = 11). A majority of pharmacists had dispensed naloxone to patients; a minority of all consumer participants had obtained pharmacy naloxone. Four themes emerged: consumer fear of future consequences if requesting naloxone; pharmacists' concerns about practice logistics related to naloxone; differing perceptions of how opioid safety is addressed in the pharmacy; and solutions to addressing these barriers. Whereas consumer groups differed in awareness of naloxone and availability at pharmacies, all groups expressed support for the pharmacist's role and preferences for a universal offer of naloxone based on clear criteria. CONCLUSION Pharmacies complement community naloxone provision to patients and caregivers. To overcome stigma of naloxone receipt, increased public awareness of naloxone and pharmacist training about naloxone and addiction are required. Pharmacists should offer naloxone via universal opt-out strategies-where all patients meeting evidence-based criteria are offered naloxone-rather than targeted or opt-in strategies-where only patients perceived as high risk or patients who request it are offered naloxone.
