Localized Multi-Site Knee Bioimpedance as a Predictor for Knee Osteoarthritis Associated Pain Within Older Adults During Free-Living

The drastic increase in the aging population has increased the prevalence of osteoarthritis in the United States. The ability to monitor symptoms of osteoarthritis (such as pain) within a free-living environment could improve understanding of each person's experiences with this disease and provide opportunities to personalize treatments specific to each person and their experience. In this work, localized knee tissue bioimpedance and self-reports of knee pain were collected from older adults ([Formula: see text]) with and without knee osteoarthritis over 7 days of free-living to evaluate if knee tissue bioimpedance is associated with persons' knee pain experience. Within the group of persons' with knee osteoarthritis increases in 128 kHz per-length resistance and decreases in 40 kHz per-length reactance were associated with increased probability of persons having active knee pain ([Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]).

ANALYSIS OF MUSCLE FATIGUE RECOVERY IN SKIERS: A NUTRITIONAL INTERVENTION

ABSTRACT Introduction: Skiing is a sport that demands the high performance of motor coordination with high energy consumption, factors that strongly influence muscle fatigue. Athletes who experience this phenomenon tend to present a decline in performance, generating psychological irritability and impairment in concentration. Diet is closely related to athletic performance, but the proper prescription for skiing athletes still lacks studies. Objective: To explore the methods of recovery from sports fatigue in skiers by providing up-to-date perspectives for effective nutritional intervention during the recovery stage. Methods: Seven young male skiers were selected as research subjects, and caloric intake, among other conditions, was recorded in detail. After three weeks, indices of body weight, body fat rate, serum metabolism, cardiopulmonary capacity, and energy metabolism, among other relevant information, were duly recorded and compared. Results: The intervention did not significantly impact lean body mass indices (p>0.05). The athletes’ body weight decreased significantly, and the body fat rate decreased significantly after the nutritional intervention; The analyzed biomarkers were positively impacted, except the urea nitrogen concentration that showed a tendency to increase after the nutritional intervention, an effect that may be linked to the proportional increase of protein intake. Conclusion: The proposed nutritional intervention positively impacted the skiers’ energy metabolism, directly impacting the athletes’ recovery from sports fatigue. THE THERAPEUTIC EFFECT OF SPORTS ON RELIEVING CHRONIC FATIGUE

ABSTRACT Introduction Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a group of long-term fatigue; the rest is difficult to achieve. At the same time, it is accompanied by corresponding physical dysfunction and psychological and mental symptoms. It is very meaningful to find exercise countermeasures to cope with chronic fatigue syndrome actively. Object This article analyzes the current students’ CFS to realize the cognition of the disease. At the same time, it analyzes the effect of sports on the treatment of chronic fatigue to help students formulate related sports programs. Method The article conducts a related questionnaire survey and analysis of students and analyzes CFS and exercise status symptoms. Results Generally, students with CFS did not actively participate in sports and had poor physical fitness, especially muscle endurance and cardiopulmonary function. However, students who actively participate in sports training basically do not have CFS. Conclusion CFS students should strengthen physical exercise and improve the CFS situation through exercise. Aerobic capacity and fatigability are associated with activity levels in women with hip osteoarthritis

Physical activity is important for physical function and pain relief in people with lower extremity osteoarthritis (OA). Unfortunately, people with OA are not as active as their peers without OA. The objective of this study was to determine whether aerobic capacity and fatigability are associated with physical activity in women with hip OA. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 36 women with hip OA. We assessed aerobic fitness as predicted VO₂ max from a 6-min walk test. We assessed fatigability using a treadmill test. Finally, we assessed self-reported physical activity using the UCLA activity scale and quantified steps per day and activity intensity using accelerometers. We used Pearson correlations to determine associations. We used regression analysis to determine whether fatigability mediated the association between aerobic fitness and physical activity. On average, subjects were moderately active via the UCLA score (5.2 ± 1.3 out of 10). Aerobic fitness (R = 0.582, p < .001) and fatigability (R = 0.516, p =.003) were significantly correlated with UCLA scores. However, aerobic fitness was the best predictor of UCLA scores, as well as sedentary time, and time spent in light activity. Fatigability was not a mediator between aerobic fitness and UCLA scores. Aerobic fitness and fatigability may be modifiable barriers to physical activity in people with OA. Future interventional studies should examine whether improving aerobic fitness improves physical activity or fatigability.

Fluctuations in Self-Reported Symptoms Predict Objective Physical Activity in Adults With Type 2 Diabetes

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to examine the association between self-reported symptoms including fatigue and sleep disturbance with moderate-intensity physical activity among adults with type 2 diabetes.

METHODS

This report was a secondary analysis of a cross-sectional study. Data from 53 participants with at least 6 days of repeated measures were used. Daytime physical activity and energy expenditure were assessed using a wrist-worn accelerometer at the free-living setting. Fatigue upon awakening was measured using a 0 to 10 scale. Sleep (eg, restorative sleep, sleep duration, and sleep efficiency) was measured using the Consensus Sleep Diary for Morning. Data were analyzed using linear mixed models by including within- and between-person effects.

RESULTS

Participants were predominantly females (54.7%) with a mean age of 60.3 years. Controlling for the covariates, at the individual level (within-person), fluctuations in restorative sleep and fatigue upon awakening predicted moderate-intensity PA. Similarly, at the individual level, fluctuations in restorative sleep and fatigue upon awakening predicted average hourly energy expenditure. However, at the group level (between-person), no significant associations were found between fatigue and restorative sleep with moderate-intensity physical activity.

CONCLUSIONS

The study findings suggest that within-person fluctuations in fatigue and restorative sleep upon awakening predict daytime moderate-intensity physical activity. At the individual level, reducing fluctuations in fatigue and restorative sleep might encourage participation in physical activity. More research is warranted to uncover the underlying causes of fluctuations in fatigue and restorative sleep. Meanwhile, diabetes care and education specialists should pay attention to the within-person fluctuations of fatigue and sleep.

Factors associated with fatigue in hip and/or knee osteoarthritis: a systematic review and best evidence synthesis

Objective

The aim was systematically to identify and evaluate factors related to fatigue in individuals with hip and/or knee OA.

Methods

A systematic literature search was conducted using AMED, CINAHL, MEDLINE, ProQuest and Web of Science Core Collections databases. Inclusion criteria comprised cross-sectional, case–control or longitudinal studies on patients with a diagnosis of hip and/or knee OA that included self-reported fatigue measures. Study quality was assessed using the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute quality appraisal tool, and factors were synthesized within a bio-behavioural framework. Study designs and quality were combined to determine current evidence levels using best evidence synthesis grading. Results

Twenty-four studies were included, of which 19 were high, 4 moderate and 1 low quality. There was strong evidence of an association between poor self-reported physical function and high depressive symptoms with higher fatigue. Moderate evidence of an association was found between severe pain, high numbers of co-morbidities and low physical activity levels with higher fatigue. There was moderate or limited evidence of no association between most sociodemographic factors and radiographic OA severity with fatigue.

Conclusion

Targets for fatigue management might include improving physical function, reducing depressive symptoms, pain and co-morbidities, and increasing physical activity levels. There is a need for more rigorous longitudinal studies to understand the causal effect of fatigue determinants within the hip and knee OA populations.
