Abstract
Carnassial teeth, as one of the most important teeth in dogs, are commonly affected by different types of injuries and pathological disorders, which require endodontic treatment. Lateral canals, which leave the main root canal, and apical deltas are present in the root canal system of dogs. These canals represent small branches that leave the main root canal at a sharp angle and terminate in a region of the periodontal ligament on the external root surface. In this study, 200 teeth were included, of which 100 were superior fourth premolars and 100 were inferior first molars. Lateral canals were present in a total of 30 roots of superior fourth premolar teeth, whereas in inferior first molars, these canals were found in 3% of roots. In superior fourth premolars, lateral canals were mostly present in the apical third, 86%, while 14% were present in the middle third of the root. In inferior first molars, lateral canals were found in 3% of the roots, 2% in the apical third and 1% in the middle third of the roots. The knowledge of the complex root canal morphology is essential for any endodontic treatment. Due to the presence and frequency of lateral canals, it is imperative to perform more thorough cleaning and instrumentation while performing endodontic treatment on superior fourth premolars compared to inferior first molars.

Abstract
Veterinary studies documenting the effect of endodontic treatment on tooth fracture resistance are scarce. The objective of this ex vivo study was to evaluate the effects of mesial access preparation and restoration, as well as pulp chamber access, instrumentation, obturation, and restoration, on the fracture resistance and characteristics of canine teeth in dogs. Sixty-five dog canine teeth were divided into 4 groups: 1. Standard endodontic treatment through a mesial access only; 2. Treatment as per group 1, adding an incisal access, instrumentation and obturation of the pulp chamber, and restoration of the access; 3. Treatment as per group 2, without pulp chamber obturation or restoration of the incisal access; and 4. Untreated teeth. The fracture resistance and characteristics of each group were documented using axial compression testing, angled 45° disto-occlusal to the long axis of the crown. The maximum force prior to fracture in groups 1, 3, and 4 were not statistically different, demonstrating that restored mesial and incisal accesses with pulp chamber instrumentation did not statistically affect fracture resistance. However, obturated and restored group 2 teeth demonstrated decreased fracture resistance compared to all other groups (P < .001). Additionally, 26.7% of group 1 teeth sustained complicated crown fractures, while 100% of group 2 teeth fractured within the obturation or restorative materials, preventing pulp exposure in these cases. Although the cause and clinical importance of decreased tooth fracture resistance following pulp chamber obturation and restoration remains unknown, it may provide protective value for maintaining a coronal seal in the event of tooth fracture.

Abstract
Introduction Tooth fracture is one of the most common traumatic maxillofacial injuries in dogs and cats. For fractures with pulp exposure occurring in functionally important teeth, the literature indicates that root canal treatment (RCT) is an effective therapy option that may be the remedy of choice before extraction. The most commonly reported fractures in the United States involve canine teeth; however, fractures of the maxillary fourth premolars are more common in Korea, where there are many small-and medium-sized dogs. RCT mechanically and chemically removes pulp tissue and bacteria (cleaning and shaping) from the infected root canal, and obturates the root canal with filling material to restore tooth functionality without inflammation. Various techniques, instruments, and materials used in humans have been modified for application in veterinary dentistry. Methods This study analyzed the results of RCT of the maxillary fourth premolar in 120 small-and medium-sized dogs (weighing less than 25 kg) using three different sealers (silicone-based sealer, bioceramic sealer, and calcium hydroxide-based sealer) through a simple application of the single-cone technique. Results The overall success rate of RCT in maxillary fourth premolars was 90.83%, with 8.33% no evidence of failure (NEF) and 0.83% failure. Discussion There were no significant differences between the three different sealers. Furthermore, preexisting periapical lesion (PAL) was reconfirmed as a factor in reducing the success rate of RCT. In addition, the working length and master apical file of each root were analyzed in our study as a novel reference for endodontic veterinarians.

Abstract
An understanding of the pulp cavity anatomy of individual teeth is essential for success during endodontic therapy. The objective of this study was to document pulp cavity anatomy and summarize numerical data of maxillary and mandibular canine teeth of domestic cats using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Thirty-nine canine teeth from eleven domestic cat cadaveric specimens were extracted and prepared for scanning. Segmentation of the pulp cavity was performed using the Avizo (v2022.2) software package. The morphological features of the pulp cavity including overall shape, configuration, presence of apical deltas and lateral canals was recorded. A quantitative analysis was performed on thirty-one teeth to explore associations between pulp cavity volume and length, apical delta length, maximum apical delta foramina number and cusp-to-tip length using a linear mixed model. Correlation between pertinent continuous variables was assessed using a Pearson's correlation test. Most pulp cavities exhibited varying curvature and ranged from a cylindrical configuration in the coronal third to an ovoid configuration in the middle to apical third. A ribbon-like flattened canal was observed in 6/31 teeth (19%). All canine teeth depicted an apical delta with various configurations except for two teeth that showed a single canal exiting at the apex. In 15/31 teeth (48%), the primary root canal within the apical delta could be clearly identified and in 16/31 (52%) the primary root canal was indiscernible. The results showed that the pulp cavities of maxillary canine teeth were significantly larger and longer and the cusp-to-tip length was longer, when compared to mandibular teeth. The apical delta length was negatively correlated to the volume of the pulp cavity. No specimens depicted lateral canals. This study revealed that the anatomy of the canine tooth pulp cavity in cats can vary considerably and should be a consideration when performing thorough debridement, shaping and obturation of the endodontic system.

Abstract
A retrospective study was conducted to determine the outcome of endodontic treatment of incisor teeth in dogs. Medical and dental records from four private veterinary specialty practices over an 8-year period (2013-2021) were reviewed. Forty-five incisor teeth from 41 dogs with ages from 1 to 11-years-old were included in the study. The indications for endodontic treatment were complicated crown fracture in 23 incisors (51.1%), non-vital tooth in 15 incisors (33.3%) and complicated crown-root fracture in seven incisors (15.5%). Evaluation criteria included availability of complete medical and dental records, patient demographics, and at least one follow-up visit as recent as 6 months after the initial root canal therapy. Endodontic treatment outcome was defined as successful, no evidence of failure, or failure. Root canal therapy was successful in 42 teeth (93.3%), no evidence of failure was found in three teeth (6.6%), and none of the cases showed failure of the treatment. Duration of follow-up ranged from 6 to 64 months. Only three variables appeared to have statistical significance: presence of preoperative periapical lucency (PAL) (P = .01), postoperative PAL (P < .001) and postoperative external inflammatory root resorption (P = .014). Based on this study, following "loose criteria" (success and no evidence of failure combined), 100% of the treatments were successful, making this option an excellent therapy choice in a veterinary specialty dentistry practice.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effect of filling technique and rotational speed on the efficacy of sealer cement placement using the Lentulo spiral filler. Cadaveric maxillary and mandibular canine teeth (n = 74) from age and breed matched fresh-frozen adult canine cadaver heads were utilized. Following routine mechano-chemical preparation, teeth were randomly divided into 8 treatment groups with varying rotational speeds [250-2,000 revolutions per minute (RPM)] and fill techniques (backfill technique versus pumping technique). The quality of the sealer cement fill was evaluated radiographically before and after master gutta percha cone placement. Percentage of voids present in the apical, midbody, and coronal portions of the tooth were subjectively scored as: no voids present, voids present in less than 25% of the area, voids present in 25-50% of the area, voids present in greater than 50% of the area. The apex was also scored as underfilled, adequately filled, or overfilled. Operating the Lentulo spiral filler at 2,000 RPM resulted in the best quality fill regardless of filling technique. The pumping technique with placement of the master gutta percha cone had a higher probability of success as compared to the backfill technique, but this finding lacked significance. Regardless of speed or technique, the apical region had the highest quality of fill. The addition of the master gutta percha cone improved the quality of fill. Therefore, we recommend using the Lentulo spiral filler at higher speeds with a pumping technique (followed by addition of a master gutta percha cone) to improve the quality of epoxy resin-based sealer cement placement.

Abstract
Medical records from 4 private practice veterinary dentistry specialty clinics were reviewed for a 5-year period (2013-2018) to identify dogs that had a fractured canine tooth treated by root canal therapy and returned for subsequent follow-up evaluation. Evaluation criteria included the presence of complete medical records with diagnostic quality intraoral radiographs for each procedure visit with a minimum of 6 months between visits. Forty-three dogs with a total of 55 endodontically treated canine teeth were identified and evaluated. Root canal treatment outcome was defined as successful, no evidence of failure (NEF), or failure based on radiographic findings. Patient age, time from initial treatment to follow-up, obturation material used, radiographic quality of obturation (including voids, overfill, and retention of fractured endodontic files), radiographic evidence of periapical disease and/or presence of external inflammatory root resorption (EIRR), and the presence or absence of a full coverage metal crown were evaluated. Treatment was classified as successful in 51 (92.73%) teeth, NEF in 3 (5.45%) teeth, and failure in 1 (1.82%) tooth. The results suggest that endodontic treatment of fractured canine teeth in dogs is a successful treatment option that allows for retention of this functionally important tooth.

Abstract
Intentional or unintentional pulp exposure of cat canines can lead to periapical disease, osteomyelitis, and oral pain. Root canal therapy (RCT) allows the retention of cat canines with pulp exposure by removing the infected pulp and replacing it with an inert material. This study used MTA Fillapex™ as a root canal sealant with gutta percha single cone obturation in 37 cats (50 canine teeth). Roots were classified as "successful," "no evidence of failure (NEF)," or "failed" at 6-month radiographic reviews. Therapy was considered "successful" if a preoperative periapical lucency had healed or not formed after treatment and any preoperative external inflammatory root resorption (EIRR) had stabilized without progression. Therapy was categorized as "NEF" if a periapical lucency had remained the same or decreased in size but not completely resolved and any preoperative EIRR had stabilized without progression. "Failed" if a periapical lucency had occurred or increased in size posttreatment or if EIRR had developed or progressed posttreatment. Thirty-two canine teeth (64%) were classified as "successful," 14 canine teeth (28%) were classified as "NEF," and 4 canine teeth (8%) were classified as "failed". The study concluded that RCT using MTA Fillapex as a root canal sealant is a suitable endodontic treatment for fractured cat canines, especially those that are periodontally or endodontically challenged.

Abstract
Veterinary dentists commonly encounter apical periodontitis in dogs. An overview of the disease is presented, concentrating on pathogenesis and mechanisms of healing. Assessment modalities are reviewed and interpretations of treatment success and failure are discussed. The limitations of readily available diagnostic equipment are illustrated. The benefits of identifying the causative agent and resultant pathosis should not be overlooked. Well-designed clinical studies evaluating various methods of long-term follow-up for apical periodontitis in dogs are needed.
