Analysis of technical characteristics of typical lower limb balance movements in Tai Chi: a cross-sectional study based on AnyBody bone muscle modeling

BACKGROUND

Tai Chi is an excellent traditional Chinese physical fitness exercise, and its unique balancing movements are very important for improving human balance. In this study, the two most representative Tai Chi balance movements, "knee lift balance" and "leg stirrup balance", were selected to establish the lower limb bone muscle model of Tai Chi balance movements by using computer simulation modeling technology, aiming to analyze the characteristics of the lower limb movement mechanisms of typical balance movements, to provide a quantitative theoretical basis for improving the scientific level of Tai Chi.

METHOD

A total of 16 subjects were recruited for this study. the BTS three-dimensional motion capture system and three-dimensional force platform were used for motion data acquisition, the physiological electromyographic signals were collected using BTS surface electromyography, and the lower limb bone muscle model of Tai Chi balance movements was established by AnyBody human simulation.

RESULT

In the knee lift balancing movement, the balance leg hip abduction/adduction angle, hip flexion/extension moment, and the strength of the rectus femoris muscle, biceps femoris short capitis, and iliacus muscle of the amateur group was significantly smaller than that of the professional group (P < 0.01). In the leg stirrup balance movement, the knee flexion/extension angle of the balancing leg in the amateur group was significantly greater than that in the professional group (P < 0.01), and the hip flexion/extension angle, hip inversion/abduction angle, knee flexion/extension moment, hip flexion/extension moment, the strength iliacus, gluteus maximus, and obturator internus were significantly smaller than those in the professional group (P < 0.01). The integral EMG of the biceps femoris of the support leg in the amateur group was significantly smaller than that of the professional group (P < 0.01). The integral EMG of the lateral femoral muscle of the balance leg was significantly smaller than that of the professional group (P < 0.01).

CONCLUSION

In this study, we found that the balancing leg of the balancing movement has a larger hip joint angle, the stirrup balancing knee joint angle is smaller, and the hip and knee joint moments are larger. This is related to joint activity and muscle activation, and amateurs should pay attention to increasing the range of motion of the hip joint and decreasing the range of motion of the knee joint when practicing to better stimulate exercise of the lower limb joints. In addition, the practice of balancing movements should strengthen the iliacus muscle, which plays an important role in maintaining the stable balance of the lower limbs, and strengthen the knee flexor and extensor muscles and hip adductor/abductor muscles of the balancing leg, thus promoting the stability of the balancing leg movements.

Lower limb joint-specific contributions to standing postural sway in persons with unilateral lower limb loss

BACKGROUND

Individuals with lower limb loss are at an increased risk for falls, likely due to impaired balance control. Standing balance is typically explained by double- or single-inverted pendulum models of the hip and/or ankle, neglecting the knee joint. However, recent work suggests knee joint motion contributes toward stabilizing center-of-mass kinematics during standing balance.

RESEARCH QUESTION

To what extent do hip, knee, and ankle joint motions contribute to postural sway in standing among individuals with lower limb loss?

METHODS

Forty-two individuals (25 m/17f) with unilateral lower limb loss (30 transtibial, 12 transfemoral) stood quietly with eyes open and eyes closed, for 30 s each, while wearing accelerometers on the pelvis, thigh, shank, and foot. Triaxial inertial measurement units were transformed to inertial anterior-posterior components and sway parameters were computed: ellipse area, root-mean-square, and jerk. A state-space model with a Kalman filter calculated hip, knee, and ankle joint flexion-extension angles and ranges of motion. Multiple linear regression predicted postural sway parameters from intact limb joint ranges of motion, with BMI as a covariate (p < 0.05).

RESULTS

With eyes open, intact limb hip flexion predicted larger sway ellipse area, whereas hip flexion and knee extension predicted larger sway root-mean-square, and hip flexion, knee extension, and ankle plantarflexion predicted larger sway jerk. With eyes closed, intact limb hip flexion remained the predictor of sway ellipse area; no other joint motions influenced sway parameters in this condition.

SIGNIFICANCE

Hip, knee, and ankle motions influence postural sway during standing balance among individuals with lower limb loss. Specifically, increasing intact-side hip flexion, knee extension, and ankle plantarflexion motion increased postural sway. With vision removed, a re-weighting of lower limb joint sensory mechanisms may control postural sway, such that increasing sway may be regulated by proximal coordination strategies and vestibular responses, with implications for fall risk.

Effects of human stature and muscle strength on the standing strategies: A computational biomechanical study

It has been hypothesized that the muscular efforts exerted during standing may be altered by changes in personal factors, such as the body stature and muscular strength. The goal of this work was to assess the contribution of leg muscles using a biomechanical model in different physical conditions and various initial postures. An optimized inverse dynamics model was employed to find the maximum muscular effort in 23,040 postures. The simulation results showed that mid-range knee flexion could help the healthy and strong individuals maintain balance, but those with weaker muscle strength required more knee flexion. Individuals of weak muscular constitution as well as those with tall stature are at the highest risk of imbalance/falling. The number of imbalanced postures due to deficits in the calf and hamstring muscles was reduced by 7.5 times by strengthening the whole body musculature. The calf and the hamstring muscles play a key role in balance regardless of stature.

Functional knee stability in non-elite handball: balance and jump performance differ based on players' position

PURPOSE

Despite the great evolvement of sports medicine, there is still a lack of consensus among sports physicians regarding the decision of return to sports after knee injury, especially in non-elite sports. Currently, no sport-specific reference data for an objective reliable evaluation of functional knee stability exist. The purpose of this study was to assess objective measures on knee joint stability from an established test battery in non-elite handball. It was assumed that players' knee stability differs depending on their field position.

METHODS

One-hundred and sixty-five non-elite handball players with a mean age of 24.3 ± 5.5 years underwent a test battery including two-legged and one-legged stability tests, two-legged and one-legged counter movement jumps, two-legged plyometric jumps, one-legged speedy jumps, and a quick feed test.

RESULTS

Athletes' physical performance differs in terms of field position. Significant differences between handball players of different positions were found in regard to two-legged stability (p < 0.036) and one-legged stability in the dominant leg (p < 0.009). Players of different positions differed in ground contact time of the plyometric jumps (p < 0.017), whereas the other functional tests did not show significant differences.

CONCLUSION

This study is first to report differences in functional knee stability of non-elite handball players on the basis of objective data. Significant differences of functional performance were noted, which were in congruence with position-specific demands. These findings demonstrate the importance of position-specific screening and training to prevent injuries.
