Comparison of IMU set-ups for the estimation of gait spatio-temporal parameters in an elderly population

Action Recognition in Basketball with Inertial Measurement Unit-Supported Vest

In this study, an action recognition system was developed to identify fundamental basketball movements using a single Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor embedded in a wearable vest. This study aims to enhance basketball training by providing a high-performance, low-cost solution that minimizes discomfort for athletes. Data were collected from 21 collegiate basketball players, and movements such as dribbling, passing, shooting, layup, and standing still were recorded. The collected IMU data underwent preprocessing and feature extraction, followed by the application of machine learning algorithms including KNN, decision tree, Random Forest, AdaBoost, and XGBoost. Among these, the XGBoost algorithm with a window size of 250 and a 75% overlap yielded the highest accuracy of 96.6%. The system demonstrated superior performance compared to other single-sensor systems, achieving an overall classification accuracy of 96.9%. This research contributes to the field by presenting a new dataset of basketball movements, comparing the effectiveness of various feature extraction and machine learning methods, and offering a scalable, efficient, and accurate action recognition system for basketball.

Validity of Wearable Inertial Sensors for Gait Analysis: A Systematic Review

Background/Objectives: Gait analysis, traditionally performed with lab-based optical motion capture systems, offers high accuracy but is costly and impractical for real-world use. Wearable technologies, especially inertial measurement units (IMUs), enable portable and accessible assessments outside the lab, though challenges with sensor placement, signal selection, and algorithm design can affect accuracy. This systematic review aims to bridge the benchmarking gap between IMU-based and traditional systems, validating the use of wearable inertial systems for gait analysis. Methods: This review examined English studies between 2012 and 2023, retrieved from the Scopus database, comparing wearable sensors to optical motion capture systems, focusing on IMU body placement, gait parameters, and validation metrics. Exclusion criteria for the search included conference papers, reviews, unavailable papers, studies without wearable inertial sensors for gait analysis, and those not involving agreement studies or optical motion capture systems. Results: From an initial pool of 479 articles, 32 were selected for full-text screening. Among them, the lower body resulted in the most common site for single IMU placement (in 22 studies), while the most frequently used multi-sensor configuration involved IMU positioning on the lower back, shanks, feet, and thighs (10 studies). Regarding gait parameters, 11 studies out of the 32 included studies focused on spatial-temporal parameters, 12 on joint kinematics, 2 on gait events, and the remainder on a combination of parameters. In terms of validation metrics, 24 studies employed correlation coefficients as the primary measure, while 7 studies used a combination of error metrics, correlation coefficients, and Bland-Altman analysis. Validation metrics revealed that IMUs exhibited good to moderate agreement with optical motion capture systems for kinematic measures. In contrast, spatiotemporal parameters demonstrated greater variability, with agreement ranging from moderate to poor. Conclusions: This review highlighted the transformative potential of wearable IMUs in advancing gait analysis beyond the constraints of traditional laboratory-based systems.

Improving the reliability of underwater gait analysis using wearable pressure and inertial sensors

This work addresses the lack of reliable wearable methods to assess walking gaits in underwater environments by evaluating the lateral hydrodynamic pressure exerted on lower limbs. Sixteen healthy adults were outfitted with waterproof wearable inertial and pressure sensors. Gait analysis was conducted on land in a motion analysis laboratory using an optoelectronic system as reference, and subsequently underwater in a rehabilitation swimming pool. Differences between the normalized land and underwater gaits were evaluated using temporal gait parameters, knee joint angles and the total water pressure on the lower limbs. The proposed method was validated against the optoelectronic system on land; gait events were identified with low bias (0.01s) using Bland-Altman plots for the stride time, and an acceptable error was observed when estimating the knee angle (10.96° RMSE, Bland-Altman bias -2.94°). The kinematic differences between the land and underwater environments were quantified, where it was observed that the temporal parameters increased by more than a factor of two underwater (p<0.001). The subdivision of swing and stance phases remained consistent between land and water trials. A higher variability of the knee angle was observed in water (CV = 60.75%) as compared to land (CV = 31.02%). The intra-subject variability of the hydrodynamic pressure on the foot ([Formula: see text] = 39.65%) was found to be substantially lower than that of the knee angle (CVz = 67.69%). The major finding of this work is that the hydrodynamic pressure on the lower limbs may offer a new and more reliable parameter for underwater motion analysis as it provided a reduced intra-subject variability as compared to conventional gait parameters applied in land-based studies.
