Towards a viable and just global nursing ethics

An Ethos of Inclusion for Global Nursing Practice

The Year of the Nurse and Midwife, 2020, is an opportunity for global nurses to realize the ethos of inclusion for transformative global nursing partnerships. Including all partners in developing and maintaining the relationship provides the foundation for bidirectionality whereby all partners learn and grow personally and professionally from each other. Guidelines, theoretical models, and Codes of Ethics are suggested for applying an ethos of inclusion in all global nursing partnerships.

Global nursing as visualised on the internet: a netnographic analysis of the emerging global paradigm in nursing

BACKGROUND

Positioned to face increasing issues relating to the growing and aging population, ill health, climate change, natural disasters, and humanitarian crises, nurses play a crucial role in responding to the challenges of globalisation. With nurses rising to meet these challenges, the term 'global nursing' has been coined. Given the ongoing proliferation of the term, it seems relevant to explore the key relationship of the concepts of 'global' and 'nursing' within the milieus provided through the internet.

AIM

To describe how global nursing as a concept is visualised in images on the internet.

METHOD

A cross-sectional observational design based on netnographic methodology was conducted. By searching the term 'global nursing' in the Google search engine, a total of 973 images illustrating 'global nursing' were collected and stored on one specific search occasion. The inclusion of data covered all regions but no other search limits.

RESULTS

The results show that global nursing, first and foremost, is visualised as an academic discourse, as a nursing activity, and as an approach to target sustainability. Further, the results also highlight that global nursing has manifested as a Western discourse, targeting students with access to resources and a humanitarian interest.

CONCLUSION

By paying attention to global nursing as it is presented in this study, it has been possible to provide valuable insights about colonial boundaries in the nursing discourse relating to globality. Based on these results, we stress that the nursing paradigm would benefit from a greater postcolonial awareness and some reflexivity connected with the global issues that nurses are facing. Impact statement: Global nursing is paradoxically visualised as something distant, connected to ideas of 'otherness', and of not belonging to the Western nursing community.

Global Nursing-a literature review in the field of education and practice

Aim

To describe key findings of Global Nursing in empirical nursing studies.

Design

A literature review using descriptive data synthesis of peer‐reviewed articles in the field of nursing education and practice.

Methods

This review of Cinahl Complete, PubMed, PsycINFO and Scopus was undertaken using the search strategy “global nursing”. Independent title/abstract and full‐text screening was undertaken, identifying original articles written in English.

Results

A total of 472 titles and 170 abstracts were read through. Seventy‐three articles were included for full‐text review. Twenty published studies of Global Nursing with multiple research methodologies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Findings were described with five categories. Global Nursing Arena, Global Nursing Working Environments, Global Nursing Workforce Management, Global Nursing Competencies and Global Nursing Networking were shown to be crucial when Global Nursing was addressed in the literature.

Global Voyeurism or Sustainable Ethical Practice?

This is a conceptual article exploring global voyeurism and service, overlaying ethical considerations in service within the profession of forensic nursing. Key elements considered include examining and reflecting on personal motivations, benefits, and consequences of service when viewed through an ethical perspective. Through this article we seek to examine the relationships between poverty tourism and service, while better supporting individual forensic nurses in their quest to align their actions with the ethical and practice comportment standards within the profession of nursing service globally. We include definition of terms, including professional identity, ethics and social justice, poverty tourism and voyeurism, global and professional service, cultural humility, partnerships, and trusting relationships. We conclude with implications, and considerations for forensic nursing.

Technology and its ethics in nursing and caring journals: An integrative literature review

BACKGROUND

Over the past 20 years, the impact of technology has increased significantly in health care. The diversity of technology is growing and its knowledge scattered. The concept of technology is ambiguous in caring and nursing sciences and its ethics remains unidentified.

AIM

To find evidence on how the concept of technology and its ethics are defined in caring and nursing sciences and practice. The purpose of this study is to describe and summarize the concept of technology and its ethics in the past nursing and caring literature.

METHOD

The integrative literature review of the past nursing and caring literature. The data were collected from caring and nursing journal articles from 2000 to 2013 focusing on technology and its ethics.The results were summarized and themed.

RESULTS

Technology as a concept has three implications. First, technology is devices and products, including ICT and advanced, simple and assistive technology. Second, technology refers to a process consisting of methods for helping people. Third, technology as a service indicates the production of care by technology. The ethics of technology has not been established as a guiding principle. Some studies excluded ethical reflection completely. Many studies discussed the ethics of technology as benefits such as improved communication and symptoms management, and the simple use of e-health services whilst others remained critical presenting ethical problems such as unwillingness and the inability to use technology, or conflicts with human aspects or questions of inequality.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this study indicates that technology as a concept is described diversely. The relation between technology and ethics is not a truism. Despite some evidence, more is needed to promote ethical care when using technology.

Foreign nurse recruitment

Recruitment of nurses by industrialized nations from developing countries has been common practice for decades. Globalization, a crucial trend of the 21st century, raises the world’s awareness of the economic and social disparities between nations. The direct impact on nurse emigration emphasizes the ethical, economic, and social inequalities between source and destination countries. It is often more cost-effective for industrialized countries to recruit from developing countries; however, the depletion of source country resources has created a global healthcare crisis. Destination countries are being challenged on the ethical implications of aggressive recruitment and their lack of developing a sustainable self-sufficient domestic workforce. Similarly, source countries are confronting the same challenges as they struggle to fund and educate adequate numbers of nurses for domestic needs and emigrant replacement. This article will review the ethical, economic, and social impacts of continued unrestricted international recruitment of nurses and present a proposal for development of an international treaty addressing global sustainability.

Study abroad as a tool for promoting cultural safety in nursing education

Nurse educators are calling for the transformation of nursing education toward curricula that promote clinical reasoning through reflective practice and understanding of patient experiences in an effort to motivate students to become change agents. Study abroad programs can play an important role in this transformation through educating nurses in the delivery of culturally safe health care in a diverse world. Exposing nursing students to study abroad experiences that are guided by critical approaches such as a postcolonial feminist framework provides nursing students with opportunities to be immersed in the life and culture of people who have a completely different positioning and location while reflecting on the "us" versus "them" phenomenon that is pervasive in modern Western society and generates negative cultural comparisons. Attention to the design and implementation of such programs is important if nursing schools in the Western world are to uphold ethical standards, promote equality in relationships with host communities and avoid inadvertent exploitation and marginalization of vulnerable peoples. We present the development and implementation of a community health study abroad program for American nursing students in Malawi, Africa using a postcolonial feminist framework.

Health and human rights advocacy: perspectives from a Rwandan refugee camp

Working at the bedside and within communities as patient advocates, nurses frequently intervene to advance individuals' health and well-being. However, the International Council of Nurses' Code of Ethics asserts that nurses should expand beyond the individual model and also promote a rights-enabling environment where respect for human dignity is paramount. This article applies the results of an ethnographic human rights study with displaced populations in Rwanda to argue for a rights-based social advocacy role for nurses. Human rights advocacy strategies include sensitization, participation, protection, good governance, and accountability. By adopting a rights-based approach to advocacy, nurses contribute to health agendas that include more just social relationships, equitable access to opportunities, and health-positive living situations for all persons.
