Familial aggregation of blood pressure with respect to anthropometric variables among the Lobana (nomadic origin) population in Punjab, India

Association of blood pressure and hypertension between parents and offspring: The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

As the number of hypertension cases in the pediatric population is growing, we aimed to investigate the parent-offspring association of hypertension in Korea. We performed a cross-sectional analysis using the data of children and adolescents aged 10-18 years and their parents extracted from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2008-2018). We analyzed the correlation of blood pressure (BP) between offspring and their parents and investigated the odds ratio (OR) of having hypertension in offspring based on parental hypertensive status. A total of 3996 children and adolescents (2224 boys and 1772 girls) aged 10-18 years and their parents (3197 fathers and 3197 mothers) were evaluated. Both boys and girls had positive associations with both parents for systolic and diastolic BP. When neither parent, only the father, only the mother, or both parents were hypertensive, 6.6%, 10.4%, 13.3%, and 25.3% of boys and 6%, 12%, 12.7%, and 22.1% of girls had hypertension, respectively. The risk of having hypertension among offspring was approximately two times higher when one parent was hypertensive and over four times higher when both parents were hypertensive compared to that among controls whose parents were not hypertensive (OR: 2.230, 1.655, and 5.021 in boys with hypertension and 2.321, 2.169, and 4.554 in girls with hypertension in the mother only, the father only, and both parents, respectively). We identified familial aggregation of hypertension in Korea. As there was an increased likelihood of having hypertension in children with parental hypertension, parental hypertension may be utilized as a screening tool for hypertension in children.

Role of SH2B3 R262W gene polymorphism and risk of coronary heart disease: A PRISMA-compliant meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

More susceptibility genes have been proved to be associated with coronary heart disease (CHD). The goal of our study is to evaluate the association between the R262W polymorphism of SH2B3 gene and risk of CHD.

METHODS

A systematic search was conducted using PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CNKI, and WanFang databases up to March of 2018. The data of individual study were individually performed by 2 reviewers. The meta-analysis was performed by Stata software and expressed by the pooled odds ratio (OR) and the 95% confidence interval (CI), which were calculated by specific model according to heterogeneity.

RESULTS

Our research was based on 12 studies involving 25,845 patients and 68,910 healthy controls. Significant association between the variant R262W and CHD were found in overall populations (OR = 1.12, 95%CI = 1.09-1.15, P = .389, I = 5.4%), but not found in Asian (OR = 1.05, 95%CI = 0.98-1.12, I = 0.0%) in subgroup analysis by ethnicity. In another subgroup analysis, when classified into CHD and myocardial infarction (MI), there was a significance association between R262W and CHD (OR = 1.11,95% CI = 1.07-1.15, I = 13.5%) and MI (OR = 1.13, 95%CI = 1.08-1.18, I = 0.0%). The Begg's funnel plot revealed no significant publication bias.

CONCLUSIONS

The R262W polymorphism is associated with risk of CHD or MI in Europeans, but not in Asians.

Familial correlation and aggregation of body mass index and blood pressure in Chinese Han population

Background

It remains unclear whether the body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure (BP) profile are clustered within families in Chinese Han population. The aim of this study is to explore familial aggregation and parent-offspring correlations of BMI and blood pressure in Chinese Han population.

Methods

6,369 Han nucleus families, consisting of parents and at least one biological adult child who were living together, were enrolled from the nation-wide cross-sectional study (China National Nutrition and Health Survey) which was conducted in 2002, with a total number of 19,107 participants aged 18–64 years (6,369 sets of parents, 4,132 sons and 2,237 daughters). Family aggregation (Intra-class correlations, ICCs) and parent-offspring correlations in BMI, systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) were estimated using linear mixed effect regression models.

Results

BMI and BP levels in two generations and ICCs of BMI, SBP and DBP varied across the country. Familial aggregation of overweight/obesity was observed in rural area (ICC = 5.4%, p<0.05), and high BP (defined as SBP ≥ 120 mmHg or DBP ≥ 80 mmHg) was more common in low income families (ICC = 4.4%, p<0.05) compared to middle income (ICC = 1.9%) and high income families (ICC = 2.6%). Additionally, offspring with more parents being overweight/obese tend to have higher BMI. The similar trend was found for high BP. However, we did not observe that same-sex parent-offspring correlations of BMI and BP were stronger than the correlations for mother-son or father-daughter.

Conclusions

Our study suggested that familial environments, alongside the impact of genetic factors, could be important non-communicable chronic diseases (NCD) risk factors. Family-based intervention taking both mother and father into account might have great potential in NCD prevention for younger generation.
