Abstract
BACKGROUND Family-centered workshops' effects on children with language developmental delay remain unknown. This study assessed the feasibility of workshops for children with language developmental delay. METHODS A total of 122 children aged 18-36 months with language developmental delays and their parents participated in six sessions of 2-h family-centered multidisciplinary workshops for 6 weeks. The Mandarin-Chinese Communicative Development Inventory, Peabody Developmental Motor Scale, Emotional Competency Rating Scales, Pediatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument, Child Health Questionnaire, Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory, Caregiver Strain Index, Impact on Family Scale, PedsQL Family Impact Module, and World Health Organization Quality of Life (QOL) were administered to the children and their parents before and after the workshop. RESULTS We found improvement of emotion (P = 0.037), upper extremity and physical function (P = 0.038), and transfer and basic mobility (P = 0.019) in children and parental QOL related to children's conditions (P = 0.049), with no effect on communication ability and QOL in children and family strain and function. We also noted more significant improvement in children with pure developmental language delay than in children with nonpure developmental language delay concerning the success rates (from delayed to normal development) for expressive vocabulary (P < 0.001) and word combination (P = 0.002). Satisfaction levels toward the workshop were high. CONCLUSIONS Family-centered workshops improved children's emotions, functional performance, and parental QOL. Although the samples were too small to test different conditions of the developmental delay, the workshops for children with language developmental delays are acceptable and feasible.

Abstract
Background: Cancer diagnosis can lead to massive physical, emotional, and social burdens on children and their families. Although children have the right to be informed and participate in their care, research shows that children's views are often not considered in care situations. Thus, it is essential to strengthen children's communication and self-efficacy (SE) to convey desires and needs. The present study explores whether a play intervention is associated with improved health-related quality of life (HrQoL) and SE for communication in care situations. We hypothesize that HrQoL and SE for communication will increase from the beginning to after the pretend play intervention. Methods: Children with cancer from Germany and Sweden were enrolled. The pretend play intervention consisted of six to 10 play sessions. A heterogenic selection of questionnaires was used to measure children's HrQoL and SE before the first pretend play session and after the last play intervention. Results: Nineteen families were included in the presented analyses, including 14 self-reports of children and 19 proxy reports of parents. We found improvements in child-reported communication, and emotional and psychosocial well-being using generic and cancer-specific HrQoL measurements. Further, children's SE in care situations improved during the play intervention. Parents also reported minor improvements in the physical dimensions in both generic and chronic-generic HrQoL, along with improvements in independence. Discussion: Overall, the cancer-specific pretend play intervention offers young children with cancer a secure environment and can contribute to their well-being, and communication skills, during or after cancer treatment.

Abstract
Precision medicine is changing the treatment of childhood cancer globally, however little is known about quality of life (QoL) in children and adolescents participating in precision medicine trials. We examined QoL among patients enrolled in PRISM, the Zero Childhood Cancer Program's precision medicine trial for high-risk childhood cancer. We assessed patient QoL via self-report (aged 12-17 years) and parent-proxy (aged 4-17 years) completion of the EQ-5D-Y. We analysed data using descriptive statistics and regression models. Patients (n = 23) and parents (n = 136) provided data after trial enrolment and following receipt of trial results and treatment recommendations (n = 8 patients, n = 84 parents). At enrolment, most patients were experiencing at least some difficulty across more than one QoL domain (81% patient self-report, 83% parent report). We did not find strong evidence of a change in QoL between timepoints, or of demographic or disease factors that predicted parent-reported patient QoL (EQ-VAS) at enrolment. There was strong evidence that receiving a treatment recommendation but not a change in cancer therapy was associated with poorer parent-reported patient QoL (EQ-VAS; Mdiff = -22.5, 95% CI: -36.5 to -8.5, p = 0.006). Future research needs to better understand the relationship between treatment decisions and QoL and would benefit from integrating assessment of QoL into routine clinical care.

Abstract
The burden of treatment (BOT) is the workload of health care experienced by patients with chronic conditions and consequences on well-being. This study aimed to assess the BOT of atopic dermatitis (AD) on children and caregivers using mixed methods. The quantitative component of this mixed methods study involved the Treatment Burden Questionnaire. The qualitative component involved interviews with parents of children with moderate-severe AD. The questionnaire was completed by 168 parents; 32.1% had mild AD, 39.9% had moderate AD, and 28% had severe AD. The average burden score was 3.5 (out of 10). Average burden scores were low in mild AD (1.0 out of 10) and were proportionally higher in moderate (3.9 out of 10) and severe (5.8 out of 10) AD (p < 0.001). Increased frequency of therapy had increased perceived burden. In moderate-severe AD, oral therapy was rated as less burdensome than topical therapies. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 parents of children with moderate-severe AD. Thematic analysis grouped experiences into health care burden, treatment burden, and financial burden. Insights from health care burden analysis included "mixed messages," "treatment futility," and "expectant resolution." Insights from treatment burden included treatment routine, schooling impact, and "topical-sparing" with systemic treatment. Factors of financial burden included topical treatments, clothing, and health care visits. Moderate-severe AD is associated with high BOT, particularly related to topical therapies, which may be reduced by systemic treatment. All physicians treating children with AD should avoid potentially damaging communication regarding mixed messages, treatment futility, and expectant resolution.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of a self-report instrument measuring 6- to 12-year-old children's own experiences of participation in health care. BACKGROUND Validated measures to evaluate children's participation in health care can play a critical role in strategic work towards supporting children's participation at an individual level and in working towards quality improvements at an organisational level. There are, however, no available instruments to achieve this. METHODS An instrument development design was used, together with the TRIPOD checklist. Item construction was based on research about children's perspectives on participation in health care and Shier's model for participation. The face and content validity was evaluated by 14 healthy children, 9 paediatric nurses and 8 children with different diseases. The construct validity, internal consistency and stability reliability were evaluated based on data from 138 children visiting a paediatric clinic. RESULTS The testing of the face and content validity resulted in an instrument with child-friendly language, additional instructions and visual attractive presentation. The principle component analysis resulted in the four-factor solution: "To be included," "To trust professionals," "To take control," and "To understand information." Internal consistency and intraclass correlation coefficients were acceptable. CONCLUSION We conclude that the child participation in health care (ChiPaC) instrument has adequate reliability and validity when used to evaluate children's participation in health care. The involvement of children in the development of ChiPaC resulted in a brief, colourful and user-friendly instrument for use in paediatric health care. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE This new questionnaire, ChiPaC, is adapted for children between 6-12 years measuring participation in health care from a child perspective. ChiPaC can be used in the practical work of supporting individual children's participation in health care as well as in the strategical work towards quality improvements on an organisational level.
