Improving Cultural Competence and Self-Efficacy Among Postgraduate Nursing Students: Results of an Online Cultural Care Training Program

INTRODUCTION

Since nurses and nursing students interact with culturally diverse clients in health care settings, training programs are required to improve cultural competence and self-efficacy among them. This study aimed to investigate the effect of an online cultural care training program on cultural competence and self-efficacy among postgraduate nursing students.

METHODS

The present interventional study used random sampling to allocate 80 postgraduate nursing students into the intervention and control groups. Cultural care training program was held for the intervention group.

RESULTS

No significant difference in cultural competence and self-efficacy scores was found between the intervention and control groups in the pretest. However, the intervention group scored higher in terms of cultural competence and self-efficacy after the intervention.

DISCUSSION

Given cultural diversity and prevalence of medical tourism, nursing instructors need to pay special attention to cultural care education at all academic levels.

Identifikacija merskih instrumentov za merjenje kulturnih kompetenc pri medicinskih sestrah in študentih zdravstvene nege

Uvod: Merjenje kulturnih kompetenc je temeljni korak pri  oceni strategij učenja kulturnih kompetenc ter doseganju kulturne kompetentnosti med medicinskimi sestrami in študenti zdravstvene nege. Namen sistematičnega  regleda literature je bil proučiti vsebino in lastnosti  vprašalnikov ter izbrati najprimernejše vprašalnike za ocenjevanje kulturnih kompetenc pri medicinskih sestrah  in študentih zdravstvene nege. Metode: Izveden je bil sistematični pregled literature v  podatkovnih bazah CINAHL, ERIC, EBSCO in ScienceDirect. Uporabljeni so bili angleški izrazi: transcultural nursing,  cultural competent care, cultural competency, education nursing, questionaire. V pregled so bili vključeni izvirni  znanstveni članki z ustrezno preiskovano tematiko, dostopni v celotnem besedilu ter objavljeni po letu 2010. 2010.Rezultati: Izmed 247 člankov je bilo v končno analizo vključenih 11 člankov. Med analiziranimi vprašalniki smo na podlagi vsebine ter psihometričnih lastnosti, kot sta zanesljivost in konstrukcijska veljavnost, ugotovili, da so štirje vprašalniki najbolj primerni za merjenje kulturnih kompetenc pri medicinskih sestrah, trije vprašalniki za merjenje kulturnih kompetenc pri študentih zdravstvene nege in en vprašalnik pri medicinskih sestrah v izobraževanju.Diskusija in zaključek: Določeni vprašalniki, ki smo jih vključili v naš pregled, so na podlagi analize kakovosti merilnih lastnosti vprašalnikov primernejši za merjenje kulturnih kompetenc pri medicinskih sestrah, ostali vprašalniki pa za merjenje kulturnih kompetenc pri študentih zdravstvene nege. Sistematični pregled literature predstavlja dobro izhodišče za druge raziskovalce s področja merjenja kulturnih kompetenc pri izboru ustreznih vprašalnikov za nadaljnje raziskave.

Perceived transcultural self-efficacy and its associated factors among nurses in Ethiopia: A cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Transcultural self-efficacy is a nurse's perception of his or her own ability to accomplish activities effectively for culturally diverse clients. This self-efficacy may be affected by different factors, either positively or negatively. Quality care can be improved significantly when nurses provide patient-centered care that considers cultural background of the patients. Thus, this study aimed to assess perceived transcultural self-efficacy and its associated factors among nurses working at Jimma Medical Center.

METHODS

Facility-based cross-sectional study with both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection was conducted among 244 nurses and 10 key informants from 20 May to 20 June 2020. Bivariate and multivariable linear regression analyses were used to identify factors associated with transcultural self-efficacy. Qualitative data were coded and analyzed thematically. Quantitative results were integrated with qualitative results.

RESULTS

A total of 236 nurses participated in the study making the response rate 96.7%. The mean transcultural self-efficacy score was 2.89 ± 0.59. Sex, work experience, intercultural communication, cultural sensitivity, interpersonal communication, and cultural motivation were significantly associated with transcultural self-efficacy. Ten in-depth interviews were conducted and the findings of qualitative data yielded four major themes.

CONCLUSION

The level of perceived transcultural self-efficacy was moderate among nurses. Transcultural self-efficacy of nurses varies with several factors including sex, experience, intercultural communication, cultural sensitivity, interpersonal communication, and cultural motivation. This calls for the need to offer transcultural nursing training for nurses.

School Satisfaction in Immigrant and Chilean Students: The Role of Prejudice and Cultural Self-Efficacy

Latin-American immigration has transformed Chilean schools into new multicultural scenarios. Studies about intergroup dynamics among students from different cultural backgrounds and their psychological consequences are still limited in south–south migration contexts. Literature has suggested that intergroup relations influence students’ satisfaction with school, and they could be improved by the development of competences to cope with cultural differences. This study aims to verify if cultural self-efficacy and its dimensions mediated the influence of prejudice on satisfaction with school, in a sample composed by N = 690 Chilean and Latin-American immigrant secondary students. Results showed that cultural self-efficacy reduced the effect of prejudice in satisfaction with school, in the cases of both immigrant and Chilean students. The dimensions of cultural self-efficacy in processing information from other cultures and mixing with different others make the difference. Findings’ contributions for the understanding of adolescents’ intergroup relations and psychosocial interventions at school are discussed.

The gerontological nurse specialist's core competencies in China: A cross-sectional study

Aim

To describe the core competencies of gerontological nurse specialists and investigate the factors that contribute to the development of core competencies.

Design

A descriptive cross‐sectional study was conducted from August 2015–March 2016.

Methods

The descriptive study of gerontological nurse specialists’ core competencies used a self‐assessment instrument with three first‐level domains (attitude, skill and knowledge) and 9 s‐level dimensions. A total of 225 gerontological nurse specialists from ten provinces in China were selected by a convenience sampling method.

Results

The average core competency score of the gerontological nurse specialists was 3.78, in the middle level(3.30–4.17/5.00). Core competency was associated with gerontological nurse specialists’ age (p = .005), professional title (p = .017), hospital level (p = .006) and passion for geriatric nursing (p = .000). The average scores of attitude, skill and knowledge were 4.45, 4.02 and 4.18, respectively. All first‐level domains were related to age (p ≤ .021) and passion for geriatric nursing (p ≤ .008); knowledge and skill were associated with professional title (p ≤ .045) and attitude and skill were associated with hospital level (p ≤ .020).

Competencia cultural de enfermeras en salud pública con población indígena

Objetivo: identificar elementos de competencia cultural (CC) en las enfermeras en salud pública (ESP) cuando cuidan a población indígena emberá-chamí.Metodología: etnografía interpretativa con observación participante y entrevistas en profundidad a diez colaboradores.Análisis de datos basado en la propuesta de Leininger con apoyo de los programas ATLAS.ti y Excel.Resultados: el patrón cultural permite identificar la capacidad de las esp para analizar su propia cultura, conocer, comprender e interactuar con la cultura del indígena y mediar a través de comunicación caracterizada por empatía, adaptación del lenguaje verbal y no verbal que evidencian respeto por la singularidad indígena, en un contexto de armonía con laspolíticas institucionales basadas en la cultura indígena.Conclusión: la CC de esp es un proceso amplio, tanto de ESP con la comunidad como de la articulación con políticasinstitucionales para atender la cosmovisión indígena.
