"You Should Maybe Work Together a Little Bit": Formulating Requests in Interprofessional Interactions

What professionals say and do: the tension between egalitarianism and hierarchy in interprofessional teamwork

This study aimed to explore the power dynamics in interprofessional teamwork by conducting an ethnographic study of three interprofessional teams working in mental health and substance use services in Norway. Data were collected through 14 observation sessions and 18 in-depth interviews with health and social work professionals. Given the potential difference between "what people say and what people do," we explored how ideas of power were articulated by health and social care professionals and how such structures were observed to be played out in practice. The findings suggest a presence of contrasting egalitarian and hierarchical structures, and that professionals were aware of the resulting tension and operated within it. This study contributes to the literature on interprofessional health and social care through providing an analysis of the power dynamics of teamwork interaction and how professionals relate to such structures. The results are relevant to a broad context of interprofessionalism as they provide valuable insight into how power should be understood as a continuum of changeable positions and motivations.

Making Conversation Analysis Accessible: A Conceptual Guide for Health Services Researchers

The quality of healthcare communication can impact both experiences and outcomes. We highlight aspects of communication that can be systematically examined using Conversation Analysis (CA) and provide guidance about how researchers can incorporate CA into healthcare studies. CA is a qualitative method for studying naturally occurring communication by analyzing recurrent, systematic practices of verbal and nonverbal behavior. CA involves examining audio- or video-recorded conversations and their transcriptions to identify practices speakers use to communicate and interpret behavior. We explain what distinguishes CA from other methods that study communication and highlight three accessible CA approaches that researchers can use in their research design, analysis, or implementation of communication interventions. Specifically, these approaches focus on how talk is produced (specific words, framing, and syntax), by whom, and when it occurs in the conversation. These approaches can be leveraged to generate hypotheses and to identify patterns of behavior that inform empirically driven communication interventions.
