Interest-Ability Profiles: An Integrative Approach to Knowledge Acquisition

Cognitive abilities and interests both play an important role in guiding knowledge acquisition, but most previous studies have examined them separately. The current study used a large and representative dataset to integrate interests and abilities using a person-centered approach that examines how distinct profiles of interests and abilities relate to individual strengths and weaknesses in knowledge. Two key findings emerged. First, eight interest–ability profiles were generated from Latent Profile Analysis (LPA), which replicated and extended the interrelations of interests and abilities found in previous studies using variable-centered approaches. Second, each profile’s strongest knowledge scores corresponded to their strongest abilities and interests, highlighting the importance of interest–ability profiles for guiding the development of knowledge. Importantly, in some domains, the lower ability profiles were actually more knowledgeable than higher ability profiles. Overall, these findings suggest that people learn best when given opportunities to acquire knowledge relevant to both their interests and abilities. We discuss how interest–ability profiles inform integrative theories of psychological development and present implications for education and career development.

Assessing Interests in the Twenty-First-Century Workforce: Building on a Century of Interest Measurement

Recent research has re-emphasized the importance of vocational interests for understanding workplace attitudes and behavior. As a result, there is a renewed interest in the assessment of vocational interests in organizations. Numerous interest assessments have been developed over the past century, and they are now administered to millions of people throughout the world. Nevertheless, there is still work to be done, particularly as interest assessments are increasingly being used in organizational settings. This article reviews developments in interest assessments and discusses the implications of their use for both research and practice. It discusses the advantages and disadvantages of examining vocational interests in organizational contexts and proposes future research directions.

Career Counseling Interventions for Video Game Players

Video games are becoming ubiquitous in Western societies. However, this virtual leisure has received little attention from researchers in career counseling, leaving career counselors relatively unprepared to work with video game players. In this article, we propose three types of interventions to capitalize on the benefits of playing video games to foster the career counseling process. The first intervention aims to identify and transfer the skills that video game players develop through their leisure activity. The second intervention highlights how video game players’ narrative may reveal vocational personality types. The third intervention proposes to turn career counseling tasks into a game to increase motivation to achieve it. The strengths and limitations of these interventions are underlined, as well as the potential of career counseling sessions to help remedy problematic video game play.

Conducting Studies on Person-Centered Career Interest Profiles: An Illustrative Example in Hong Kong

Among the approaches to the study of career interests, the person-centered profile approach (i.e., studying the career interest profiles of individuals), rather than the traditional construct-centered approach, has gained more attention in recent years. In our research, we intend to advance our understanding of career interests with the person-centered profile approach and address some important conceptual and methodological issues raised by previous studies. Based on the cultural context of Hong Kong after the 1997 handover, we hypothesized four general career interest profiles for Hong Kong high school graduates. Using a sample of senior secondary school graduates who were not admitted into undergraduate programs and a cohort sample of first-year university students, we found support for this hypothesis. This classification was validated by its relationships with career decisiveness, parents’ open communication style, and life satisfaction. Our research provides guidelines to test the validity of the proposed forms of career interest profiles.

Five-Factor Personality Traits and RIASEC Interest Types: A Multivariate Meta-Analysis

Determining the relationships between five-factor model (FFM) personality dimensions and Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional (RIASEC) types is important for counselors and clients during the career choice process. There have been mixed findings regarding this relationship, necessitating this research. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the FFM and RIASEC interest types employing a multivariate meta-regression meta-analysis. Thirty-four studies with 43 independent samples comprising 19,872 participants were employed. Moderator variables included mean age, country of sample, publication year, and FFM and RIASEC Measurement Scales. Estimated correlations between FFM and RIASEC scores ranged from −.08 to .36 suggesting that personality and interests are more distinct constructs than previously thought. FFM Measurement Scales and RIASEC scores by country of sample are important moderating variables in the FFM-RIASEC relationship. The findings have important implications for counseling and research.

Links between gendered leisure time in childhood and adolescence and gendered occupational aspirations

The world of work remains gender-segregated, and research is needed to identify factors that may give rise to women's and men's vocational choices. This study explored bidirectional relations between youth's gendered career aspirations and the proportions of youth's leisure time spent in stereotypically gendered activities and gendered social contexts. Participants were 203 youth (52% girls) from predominantly white, working and middle class families living in the US, who reported on their occupational aspirations and gendered interests in home interviews and on their daily activities in a series of 7 nightly phone interviews on two occasions, in middle childhood (M_age = 10.9) and in adolescence (M_age = 17.3). Path models revealed that aspirations predicted youth's time use more so than the reverse. Time in gendered social contexts, specifically time in female-only contexts, but not time in gender-typed activities, predicted career aspirations. Implications of these findings and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Long-Term Effect of Parents’ Support on Adolescents’ Career Maturity

The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing adolescents’ career development. Using three-wave longitudinal data (Seoul Education Longitudinal Study2010), we examined the direct and indirect effects of parents’ support on career maturity, in addition to the mediating effect of self-esteem in the relationship between parents’ support and career maturity. We also examined the sex differences in the relationship among the variables. The subjects of this research were 4,187 adolescents who progressed from seventh grade in 2010 to ninth grade in 2012. The results are as follows: First, parental support has differential effects on career maturity via self-esteem. Second, in the longitudinal relationship of parents’ support, self-esteem, and career maturity, the developmental differences according to sex were supported empirically. This study finding suggests that it is possible to enhance adolescents’ career development by proper interventions in the period of adolescence which take into consideration these sex differences.
