Abstract
Percutaneous hallux valgus correction is gaining popularity with foot and ankle surgeons. Various studies have found that the percutaneous approach has increased patient satisfaction and outcomes. The technique of the procedure has some variability with the geometry of the distal osteotomy being the most scrutinized. As of this publication, there has been no comparative studies on the geometry of the distal metatarsal osteotomy. This is a retrospective study of 50 patients who underwent percutaneous correction of a hallux valgus deformity with either a percutaneous transverse or modified chevron osteotomy. The two groups were compared radiographically, preoperatively, and postoperatively using both the intermetatarsal and hallux valgus angles. There is no difference in radiographic outcomes when comparing pre and post-operative IM and HAV angles, and it is the surgeon's comfort levels with a particular geometry of the osteotomy that should determine the approach.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to measure and compare plantar pressures, forces and gait parameters in athletes with and without hallux valgus. It was a cross sectional study with the sample Size: 106 [53 for each group (Hallux valgus and without hallux valgus)]. Hallux valgus angle was calculated with digital photographs uploaded on Karasunpo software. Participants only with the moderate and severe hallux valgus angle were selected. For participant having hallux valgus in both the feet, one with the greater angle of hallux valgus was selected. Participants without hallux valgus were the ones whose hallux valgus angle was less than 15 degrees. The participants of both groups were asked to walk on predetermined speed of 4.8 kmph. The device used was Zebris FDM-T (Zebris® Medical GmbH, Germany) for the pedobarographic and gait parameter measurement. On an average, measurement was recorded for 20 steps during the different phases of gait in all subjects and corresponding mean values were calculated. Mean values for all the readings were documented and statistically calculated. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS (v.27.0.1) with unpaired t-test to compare between both the groups. Shapiro-Wilk test was used to check normality of data. Significant p-values for forefoot forces (0.001), forefoot pressures (<0.001) and midfoot pressures (0.002) were found. There is clear evidence of increased foot loading in young adult athletes with hallux valgus on the forefoot and midfoot regions while performing activities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to clarify the clinical outcomes of surgical treatment for end-stage ankle osteoarthritis in patients aged ≥ 75 years and compare these outcomes with those of patients aged < 75 years. METHODS A total of 148 patients, including 65 who underwent total ankle arthroplasty and 83 who underwent ankle arthrodesis, were retrospectively surveyed. Clinical outcomes were assessed preoperatively and at the last follow-up using the Japanese Society for Surgery of the Foot Hindfoot Scale and a self-administered foot evaluation questionnaire (SAFE-Q). Patient characteristics, including age, sex, body mass index, radiographic severity, and follow-up period, were also assessed. The patients were divided into older (≥ 75 years) and younger (< 75 years) age groups. Improvements in outcomes were then compared between age groups using univariate analysis and analysis of covariance adjusted for patient characteristics. Total ankle arthroplasty and ankle arthrodesis were analyzed separately. RESULTS All clinical outcome scores improved postoperatively in the older age groups for both procedures. Scores for the pain and pain-related subscale of the SAFE-Q improved by 37 points (p < 0.001) in post-total ankle arthroplasty patients and by 35 points in post-ankle arthrodesis patients (p < 0.001). Furthermore, multivariate analysis showed that the improvements observed in all scores were not different between the older and younger age groups for both post-total ankle arthroplasty and post-ankle arthrodesis patients, except for the SAFE-Q physical functioning subscale score for post-ankle arthrodesis patients. The clinical outcomes improved significantly in post-total ankle arthroplasty and post-ankle arthrodesis patients aged ≥ 75 years. Moreover, these improvements were similar to those observed in patients aged < 75 years. CONCLUSIONS Surgical treatment of end-stage ankle osteoarthritis can be a viable treatment option, even in elderly patients, and can be expected to improve similarly to younger patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to clarify the prevalence of pain outside the foot, and to determine the associations of pain outside the foot with foot-specific quality of life (QOL) in patients with hallux valgus. METHODS Patients scheduled to undergo hallux valgus surgery were recruited. Patients answered whether they experienced disabling pain in 13 body regions other than the foot. Foot-specific QOLwas assessed using the Self-Administered Foot Evaluation questionnaire (SAFE-Q). Foot pain was quantified using the visual analogue scale (VAS). Patient characteristics, including age, sex, comorbidity, anxiety, and depression, were also surveyed. The association between pain elsewhere and the SAFE-Q and pain VAS scores were assessed using univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS Of 102 patients, 55 (54%) experienced pain other than the foot. All SAFE-Q subscale scores were lower, and pain VAS was higher in patients with pain elsewhere than in patients without. In the multivariate analysis, an increase in the number of pain regions was independently associated with a decrease in SAFE-Q scores and an increase in pain VAS. CONCLUSION More than half of the patients with hallux valgus experienced pain elsewhere. The presence of pain elsewhere was associated with poorer foot-specific QOL and severer foot pain.

Abstract
Aim: To compare the effects of progressive exercise therapy, performed under the supervision of a physiotherapist and given as a home program in individuals with hallux valgus. Methods: Participants were randomly divided into two groups. While one group performed the exercises under the supervision of a physiotherapist, the other group did the same program at home. Results: The amount of decrease in foot adduction angle, pain level while walking, and right foot navicular height of individuals receiving treatment under the supervision of a physiotherapist were significantly higher. Conclusion: The exercise program applied under the supervision of a physiotherapist was more effective in reducing the first toe adduction angle, medial longitudinal arc height, and pain, improving dynamic balance and functional capacity.

Abstract
AbobotulinumtoxinA (aboBoNT-A, Dysport® [Ipsen, Paris, France]) inhibits acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction and may modulate pain signaling in hallux valgus (HV). This randomized study (NCT03569098) included a double-blind phase (aboBoNT-A 300U, 500U or placebo injections into forefoot muscles) and an open-label aboBoNT-A treatment period in participants with an HV diagnosis and no HV surgery. The primary endpoint was change from baseline in numeric pain rating scale (NPRS) score at week 8. Secondary endpoints included change in NPRS (other time points) and proportion of participants with ≥20% reduction from baseline NPRS (responders). Post-hoc analyses assessed number of days in a 7-day evaluation period that participants spent in a lower pain state than at baseline. Participants received aboBoNT-A 300U (n = 63), 500U (n = 60) or placebo (n = 63). Superiority to placebo was not observed with either aboBoNT-A dose at week 8, thus the primary endpoint was unmet. At week 12, a trend toward efficacy was observed with aboBoNT-A 500U versus placebo and the proportion of participants with ≥20% reduction from baseline NPRS was greater with aboBoNT-A 500U versus placebo (p = .006). Participants in the aboBoNT-A 500U group spent more days with lower NPRS than their lowest baseline score, and with NPRS ≥2 points lower than their mean baseline NPRS at weeks 8 and 12 versus placebo (all p < .05; post-hoc). AboBoNT-A was well tolerated. Although the primary endpoint was unmet, other endpoints showed a nominal advantage for aboBoNT versus placebo for treatment of HV-related pain, particularly at week 12. Further clinical evaluation is needed to establish whether botulinum toxins represent a viable non-operative treatment option for HV-associated pain. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY: Hallux valgus is the medical name for a bunion, a foot deformity that can worsen over time. Patients with bunions experience pain and walking can become difficult, which can affect their quality of life. Foot support aids (e.g., braces, splints and inserts) are available, but surgery is the standard treatment. This study looked at how injections of a specific type of botulinum toxin, called abobotulinumtoxinA or "aboBoNT-A", into the foot may help to reduce pain in patients with bunions. The study included 186 patients aged 18 to 75 years who had not had surgery on their bunion. The researchers looked at how well the injections worked using scales that measure the pain levels the patient experienced. The main outcome was whether patients who had aboBoNT-A injections had less pain after 8 weeks than they did before treatment. The study included patients who were injected with saltwater (no treatment) to check that any treatment effect was real. Researchers also looked at the results after 12 weeks, as well as how many patients had less pain after treatment than before and how many days in a given week patients experienced less pain after treatment than they did before. There was no reduction in pain levels with aboBoNT-A injections after 8 weeks compared with no treatment. However, the other study outcomes suggested that aboBoNT-A resulted in a small benefit compared with no treatment, especially after 12 weeks. Further medical research is needed to establish whether botulinum toxins represent an alternative treatment to surgery for the pain associated with bunions.

Abstract
Background Despite advancements in primary correction of hallux valgus (HV), significant rates of reoperation remain across common techniques, with complications following primary correction up to 50% according to some studies. 1 This study explored different methods of surgery currently used in treating HV recurrence specifically (for which literature on the subject has been limited), evaluating open and adapted minimally invasive surgical (MIS) primary techniques used for revision. Methods In December 2020, literature search for both open and MIS surgical techniques in HV revision was conducted using PubMed, EMBASE, and MEDLINE library databases. Results and Conclusion Of initial 143 publications, 10 were finally included for data synthesis including 273 patients and 301 feet. Out of 301 feet, 80 (26.6%) underwent revision with MIS techniques (involving distal metatarsal osteotomies). Those undergoing grouped MIS revisions had an average improvement of 38.3 in their American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society score, compared to 26.8 in those using open techniques. Revision approaches using grouped MIS techniques showed a postoperative reduction in intermetatarsal angle and HV angle of 5.6 and 18.4 degrees, respectively, compared to 15.5 and 4.4 degrees, respectively, for open techniques. There are, however, limitations in the current literature on MIS techniques in revision HV surgery specifically. MIS techniques grouped did not show worse outcomes or safety concerns compared to open techniques.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Plantar pressure assessment is commonly performed to identify pathognomonic gait characteristics and evaluate therapeutics against them in people with various foot disorders. Little is known about the reliability and validity of this assessment in people with hallux valgus (HV) per foot region. RESEARCH QUESTION This study aimed to assess the reliability and validity of the in-shoe plantar pressure measurement method during gait in people with HV and the required number of footsteps, as an intra-subject sample size, to ensure a reliable and valid use of this method. METHODS With an inserted disposable insole plantar pressure sensor in shoes, 17 females with HV (HV angle > 15°) completed three gait trials over the ground at a comfortable speed. Peak plantar pressure data and its distribution in 15 stance phases on the foot clinically diagnosed with HV in each participant were extracted by dividing the foot into eight regions. The intraclass correlation coefficient per foot region and the number of footsteps required to produce a valid peak plantar pressure and distribution (intraclass correlation coefficient > 0.90) were used to measure reliability. Based on the limit of agreement analysis, the coefficient of variation between the averaged value from each incremental footstep (2-14 footsteps) and 15 reference footsteps was calculated. RESULTS The intraclass correlation coefficient of plantar pressure assessment with the in-shoe sensor was 0.606-0.847 in the eight foot regions in people with HV. Additionally, the number of steps required for a valid assessment ranged from two to nine. Hence, the application of averaged values from more than nine footsteps is recommended for this evaluation. SIGNIFICANCE This reference sample size is intended to be used in future studies and clinical settings to determine the efficacy of HV treatment.

Abstract
The European Foot and Ankle Society (EFAS) score is a recently developed foot and ankle patient-reported outcome measure. It has been developed and partly validated in seven languages. This study's aim was to investigate the measurement properties of the Dutch version of the EFAS score. Subscales of the Dutch EFAS score were evaluated in 547 patients with a variety of foot and ankle diagnoses. Floor and ceiling effect, reliability, and construct validity were assessed. The internal consistency of the EFAS score was acceptable (Cronbach's alpha 0.79-0.94). Repeatability was considered poor, with intraclass correlation coefficients between 0.32 and 0.39. Construct validity was inadequate with confirmation of 67% of the hypothesized correlations. In conclusion, the Dutch version of the EFAS score does not have adequate measurement properties for use in patient with patients with varying foot and ankle problems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A kinematic coupling relationship exists between foot joints during gait. In individuals with hallux valgus, forefoot or hallux kinematics may be affected by adjacent or nonadjacent joint motion. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the foot joint coordination pattern and variability during gait in young females with hallux valgus. METHODS Twenty-five young females with hallux valgus and 25 healthy young females without hallux valgus were enrolled. Reflective markers were attached according to a multisegment foot model. Kinematic data were obtained using a three-dimensional motion analysis system. Joint angles between distal and proximal segments were calculated using analysis software. Foot joint coordination pattern and variability were assessed using a vector-coding technique. FINDINGS Individuals with hallux valgus had a larger rearfoot relative to shank eversion and forefoot relative to midfoot dorsiflexion during terminal stance and pre-swing compared with those without hallux valgus. There were no significant differences in coordination patterns, but the consistency of coordination between the rearfoot relative to shank motion in the frontal plane and forefoot relative to midfoot motion in the sagittal plane during terminal stance was greater in the hallux valgus group than in the control group. INTERPRETATION The soft tissue composing the first ray might suffer from more severe stress due to the large motion that occurred with low variability in individuals with hallux valgus. This finding may suggest that the altered kinematics and coordination variability in foot joints are related to hallux valgus biomechanical etiology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to clarify the incidence rate and the risk factors for the progression of the hallux valgus deformity. METHODS Patients who had weight-bearing radiographs of the foot taken twice or more, with a ≥2-year interval, were retrospectively analyzed. Progression of the deformity was defined as an increase in the hallux valgus angle of ≥5° during the follow-up. The association of hallux valgus progression with patient characteristics and radiographic measurements at baseline was determined using univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS Totally, 268 patients (217 women and 51 men; median age, 64 years) were analyzed. An increase in the hallux valgus angle of ≥5° occurred in 44 (17%) patients in a median follow-up of 49 months. Large hallux valgus angle (odds ratio, 1.07) on the dorsoplantar radiograph at baseline were independent risk factors for the progression of the deformity. CONCLUSION Progression of the hallux valgus deformity occurred in one of six patients. Furthermore, large hallux valgus angle was the risk factor for subsequent deformity progression. Patients with large hallux valgus angle should be informed about the possible progression of the deformity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hallux valgus (HV) is a common condition causing substantial morbidity. Radiographic assessment is the gold standard for grading severity but is not always feasible in clinical/research settings. HV line-drawings, consisting of five drawings for each foot depicting a sequential increase in HV angle of 15°, have been clinically validated for self-reporting severity. We aimed to undertake radiographic validation of this self-report instrument. METHODS Adults aged ≥50 from four GP practices were sent a health survey. Responders self-reported HV severity for each foot using the line-drawing instrument. Those reporting foot pain in the last year had radiographs taken at a research clinic from which intermetatarsal, hallux abductus and hallux interphalangeal abductus angles were calculated. Ten feet were randomly selected for each HV line-drawing grade for both feet. Associations between self-reported HV line drawings and radiographic measurements were assessed using Spearman's ρ correlation coefficients, mean radiographic angle measurement (95% confidence interval) and one-way analysis of variance. RESULTS Increasing HV line-drawing grade was positively correlated with radiographic measurements for intermetatarsal and hallux abductus angles (Spearman's ρ = 0.602, p < 0.001; 0.821, p < 0.001, respectively). Hallux interphalangeal abductus angle showed an inverse correlation with increasing line-drawing grade (-0.204, p = 0.053). Differences in radiographic measures between HV line drawing grades were significant for intermetatarsal (F = 13.98, p < 0.001) hallux abductus (F = 38.90, p < 0.001) but not hallux interphalangeal abductus angle (F = 2.21, p = 0.075). CONCLUSION Grading HV severity by self-reported HV line-drawings provides a valid representation of deformity determined from radiographic measurements and is a useful screening/self-reporting tool.

Abstract
Hallux valgus (HV) is a common anatomical deformity leading to pain and difficulty with footwear and mobility. Bilateral HV deformity is much more common than unilateral although it remains unclear whether the severity of deformity is equal between feet. The objective was to investigate the severity and symmetry of HV in patients with bilateral symptomatic deformity presenting for surgery. Weight-bearing radiographs of patients presenting with symptomatic bilateral HV were reviewed. The hallux valgus angle (HVA) and intermetatarsal angle (IMA) were measured and classified as mild, moderate, or severe. Left-to-right comparison was undertaken to assess whether the degree of deformity was similar for each foot. The relationship between age, HVA, and IMA was also assessed. Between July 2014 and June 2020, 322 ft (161 patients with bilateral deformity) underwent corrective HV surgery. Of those, 6.8%, 64.6%, and 28.4% were classified as mild, moderate, and severe, respectively on the left side, and on the right 6.2%, 67.7%, and 26.1% were classified as mild, moderate, and severe respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between feet for either IMA (p = 0.06) or HVA (p = 0.85). There was a moderate correlation (R = 0.41, p ≤ 0.001) between HVA and IMA. There was only a 'weak' or 'very weak' correlation between age and HVA or IMA. Patients presenting for surgery with symptomatic bilateral HV have symmetrical moderate radiographic deformity at the time they present for consideration of surgical intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hallux valgus is a common forefoot deformity that affects function of foot and quality of life (QoL). This study aims to identify factors associated with clinically important improvements in QoL after hallux valgus corrective surgery. METHODS A retrospective analysis on 591 cases of hallux valgus corrective surgery performed between 2007 and 2013 was conducted. Patients' preoperative and 2-year postoperative Physical Component Score (PCS) and Mental Component Score (MCS) were compared to identify the presence of clinically significant improvements in patient-reported QoL. A multiple logistic regression model was developed through a stepwise variable-selection model building approach. Age, BMI, preoperative patient reported outcome score, PCS, MCS, pain score, gender, side of surgery, type of surgery, and presence of lesser toe deformities or metatarsalgia were considered. RESULTS Median PCS significantly improved from 49 to 53 (p < 0.001), and median MCS remained at 56 (p = 0.724). Age, preoperative MCS and PCS were independent predictors for significant improvements of PCS at 2-year postoperatively. CONCLUSION Three groups of patients were more likely to have significant QoL improvements after hallux valgus corrective surgery. These were the younger patients, those with better preoperative mental health or those with poorer preoperative physical health. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE III.

Abstract
Acute great toe (Hallux) pain is a common complaint encountered by the primary care physician. Pathological conditions can vary from acute trauma to acute exacerbation of underlying chronic conditions. Delay in treatment or misdiagnosis can lead to debilitating loss of function and long-lasting pain. This review endeavors to discuss the pertinent history, physical exam findings, radiographic evidence, conservative treatment options, and surgical management for the musculoskeletal causes of acute and acute on chronic great toe pain in the adult population. The acute pathologies discussed in this review are hallux fractures and dislocations, turf toe, sand toe, and sesamoid disorders. The chronic pathologies discussed include hallux rigidus, hallux valgus, and chronic sesamoiditis.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Hallux valgus, one of the most common foot disorders, contributes to the formation of pain, changes foot proportions and hinders everyday functioning. In this study we wanted to verify if kinesiology taping improves hallux valgus and affects the position as well as reducing pain. Materials and Methods: Forty feet with hallux valgus were examined and the parameters were measured at three stages: before the kinesiology taping was applied, just after its application and after a month of use. Measurements were taken with a 3D scanner and a baropodometric platform. Results: When taping was applied, the hallux valgus angle decreased statistically significantly compared with pre-taping (p < 0.01). The use of taping for a month significantly reduced this angle compared with pre-taping (p < 0.05). Parameters such as foot length, the surface of the hindfoot and forefoot and hindfoot pressure on the ground changed. A change in the hallux position due to the taping produced significant changes in the perception of pain (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Kinesiology taping acts on the hallux valgus and foot position mechanically. This makes kinesiology taping an effective method of conservative treatment for patients who are not qualified for surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health-related quality of life (QOL) is defined as a patient's subjective perception of his or her own health. Insufficient data exist on QOL of patients who undergo a hallux valgus (HV) operation. We used a 36-item short form survey (SF-36) to measure QOL of such patients. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of HV on QOL and to identify QOL determinants. METHODS Fifty patients who underwent surgery for HV between 2015 and 2017 were included in the study. The SF-36 questionnaire was applied to the patients before and after surgery. Patients' medical records were examined to identify possible factors affecting QOL such as age, gender, body mass index, duration of symptoms, or smoking. RESULTS The mean age of the patients was 55.6 ± 3.8 years, and 42 of the 50 patients were women. The mean duration of disease was 12 ± 3.7 years. The surgery improved QOL scores for general health, emotional well-being, role limitations due to personal or emotional problems, physical functioning and bodily pain. However, the changes in scores for vitality and social functioning were not statistically significant. Lower postoperative QOL scores for emotional well-being and bodily pain were significantly associated with age and duration of the symptoms. Compared to the mean QOL of healthy adult Turkish population, all scores in subdimensions were lower. CONCLUSIONS This study shows that HV in adults has a negative impact on general health, bodily pain, physical functioning, physical and emotional well-being rather than social well-being and vitality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to clarify the 2-year clinical and radiological outcomes of nonoperative treatment using foot orthosis for hallux valgus patients. METHODS Patients who underwent nonoperative treatment using foot orthosis were surveyed prospectively. Foot orthoses were made by one certified orthotist using the standardized method. Pain and quality of life were evaluated using subjective and objective assessment measures at 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. Furthermore, radiological outcomes, patient satisfaction, and adherence to treatment were surveyed. RESULTS A total of 53 patients (50 women and 3 men; median age, 63 years) were included for analysis. The pain visual analogue scale score significantly decreased over time, with the lowest score observed at 12 months. The treatment effect was maintained over 24 months (median score, 52, 21, and 27 points at baseline, 12 months, and 24 months, respectively; P < .001). The Japanese Society for Surgery of the Foot hallux scale, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Foot and Ankle Scale, and 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey bodily pain subscale also improved, although the treatment effects were maximal at 6 months and decreased thereafter. At 24 months, 43 (81%) patients continued to use the orthosis, with the median visual analogue scale score for patient satisfaction of 76 points. The hallux valgus angle and intermetatarsal angle did not change during the 24-month period. CONCLUSION Nonoperative treatment using foot orthoses decreased pain in patients with hallux valgus. The effect of treatment was maintained up to 2 years with a relatively high degree of patient satisfaction. However, treating physicians should inform patients to set realistic expectations and be aware that a limited degree of pain reduction is expected.

Abstract
An important step in the management of hallux valgus is the objective analysis of foot mechanics in dynamic conditions. However, the manner which hallux valgus affects the foot motion is poorly understood. Moreover, hallux valgus deformity may affect foot intersegmental coordination patterns. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative motion and intersegmental foot coordination patterns, considering the midfoot, during gait in individuals with hallux valgus. Fifteen females with hallux valgus and 13 females without hallux valgus were recruited in this study. Three-dimensional positional data during gait were collected using a motion capture system and analyzed using a multisegment foot model and an analysis software. Intersegmental foot coordination patterns were assessed using a modified vector-coding technique. In individuals with hallux valgus, the rearfoot was significantly more everted throughout stance, and forefoot motion during late stance was significantly increased. In intersegmental coordination patterns, individuals with hallux valgus exhibited excessive mobility of the rearfoot relative to the midfoot segment during midstance and increased anti-phase motion between rearfoot and midfoot segments during late stance. Excessive rearfoot eversion and altered intersegmental coordination patterns between rearfoot and midfoot may decrease the proper rigidity of the foot and lead to forefoot hypermobility during late stance in individuals with hallux valgus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hallux Valgus (HV) is the most common fore-foot deformity, which causes foot pain and limited motion that are encountered in podiatric and orthopedic practices. The purpose of this study is to develop a reliable pattern recognition method to identify the presence of HV based on plantar force measurements. METHOD Forces at five discrete metatarsal regions are measured at discrete time intervals under the right foot. Under this method, it is hypothesized that force measurement at a given time interval is related to the forces at a previous time interval by using Markovian transition matrix (T matrix). Thirty volunteers' (10 with HV, 10 without HV and 10 with un-diagnosed HV) condition were examined. The use of a Markovian transition matrix for gait characterization is novel. T matrices of all the participants were obtained and compared using means and standard deviations of each of the matrix elements. The comparison was undertaken using a new measure called the "Diagnostic Ratio" (DR). Independent Sample T-test was performed on the T matrix elements. RESULTS A significant difference was observed between the HV and non-HV groups. HV volunteers were recognized from the dispersion of the T matrices' elements. For volunteers with un-diagnosed condition exhibiting borderline DR may be interpreted as them being prone to HV. CONCLUSION Comparison of transfer matrices using means and standard deviations of the HV and non-HV groups revealed that a DR of higher than 40% could suggest having an HV condition for five volunteers of the un-diagnosed group and two were found to be prone to getting the condition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the radiographic measurements associated with the progression of hallux valgus during at least 2 years of follow-up. METHODS Seventy adult patients with hallux valgus who were followed for at least 2 years and underwent weightbearing foot radiography were included. Radiographic measurements included the hallux valgus angle (HVA), hallux interphalangeal angle, intermetatarsal angle (IMA), metatarsus adductus angle, distal metatarsal articular angle (DMAA), tibial sesamoid position, anteroposterior (AP) talo-first metatarsal angle, and lateral talo-first metatarsal angle. Patients were divided into progressive and nonprogressive groups. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors that significantly affected the progression of hallux valgus deformity. The correlation between change in HVA and changes in other radiographic indices during follow-up was analyzed. RESULTS The DMAA ( P = .027) and AP talo-first metatarsal angle ( P = .034) at initial presentation were found to be significant factors affecting the progression of hallux valgus deformity. Change in the HVA during follow-up was significantly correlated with changes in the IMA ( r = 0.423; P = .001) and DMAA ( r = 0.541; P < .001). CONCLUSION The change in the HVA was found to be significantly correlated with changes in the IMA and DMAA. A future study is required to elucidate whether this correlation can be explained by the progressive instability of the first tarsometatarsal joint. We believe special attention needs to be paid to patients with pes planus and increased DMAA. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level III, comparative study.
