Unveiling the shadows: Investigating the interplay of stalking and sexual homicide-A case study

Stalking can be defined as a pattern of fixated, repeated, and unwanted behaviours. Stalking is not an isolated incident and was associated to sexual violence. While the relationship between sexual violence and stalking is scarcely explored, no studies have tested the relationship between stalking and sexual homicide, which both involves elements of obsession. The aim of this paper was to study the relationship between stalking and sexual homicide using an exploratory case study analysis of 7 males convicted for sexual homicide. Results revealed: (1) The presence of obsession prior to the homicide; (2) The victims were ex-intimate partners or acquaintances; (3) The victims were followed several times prior to the index offence; (4) Stalking elements were not always considered by the authorities, which has led to an escalation of behaviours. This study expands our understanding between stalking and sexual violence, supporting the design of prevention and treatments.

When Kinks Come to Life: An Exploration of Paraphilic Behaviors and Underlying Predictors

Paraphilia is defined as a condition in which sexual excitement relies on fantasizing about and/or participating in unusual sexual behavior. Although recent studies have assessed the concordance between paraphilic interests and paraphilic behaviors, few studies have studied which individual traits and demographics predict engaging in paraphilic behaviors, or the level of concordance between arousal and behavior. The current study replicated and expanded Joyal and Carpentier's 2022 study. We assessed concordance between paraphilic arousal and behavior. Further, we assessed the impact of Dark Tetrad traits, impulsivity, social desirability and demographic variables on engaging in paraphilic behaviors using self-report questionnaires in a sample from the general population and FetLife. Finally, we were interested in whether these individual differences moderated the concordance between arousal and behavior. Results indicated high concordance between paraphilic arousal and behavior for all paraphilias except pedophilia and hebephilia. Younger, male participants were more likely to engage in various paraphilias than women and older participants. Machiavellianism was linked with lower paraphilic behavior, particularly impulsive or risky ones. Psychopathy predicted engaging in more deviant or illegal paraphilias, whereas sadism only showed an association for engaging in frotteurism and narcissism was not a predictor for engaging in any paraphilia. For several paraphilias, individual traits moderated the effect of arousal on behavior. Implications of these findings and future directions are discussed.

The Effect of Missing Item Data on the Relative Predictive Accuracy of Correctional Risk Assessment Tools

Missing data are pervasive in risk assessment but their impact on predictive accuracy has largely been unexplored. Common techniques for handling missing risk data include summing available items or proration; however, multiple imputation is a more defensible approach that has not been methodically tested against these simpler techniques. We compared the validity of these three missing data techniques across six conditions using STABLE-2007 (N = 4,286) and SARA-V2 (N = 455) assessments from men on community supervision in Canada. Condition 1 was the observed data (low missingness), and Conditions 2 to 6 were generated missing data conditions, whereby 1% to 50% of items per case were randomly deleted in 10% increments. Relative predictive accuracy was unaffected by missing data, and simpler techniques performed just as well as multiple imputation, but summed totals underestimated absolute risk. The current study therefore provides empirical justification for using proration when data are missing within a sample.

Protocol for development of an assessment tool for competency of ECG interpretation: expert consensus by the RAND/UCLA appropriateness method and cross-sectional testing using multidimensional item response theory

INTRODUCTION

Although the ECG is an important diagnostic tool in medical practice, the competency of ECG interpretation is considered to be poor. Diagnostic inaccuracy involving the misinterpretation of ECG can lead to inappropriate medical judgements and cause negative clinical outcomes, unnecessary medical testing and even fatalities. Despite the importance of assessing ECG interpretation skills, there is currently no established universal, standardised assessment tool for ECG interpretation. The current study seeks to (1) develop a set of items (ECG questions) for estimating competency of ECG interpretation by medical personnel by consensus among expert panels following a process based on the RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method (RAM) and (2) analyse item parameters and multidimensional latent factors of the test set to develop an assessment tool.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS

This study will be conducted in two steps: (1) selection of question items for ECG interpretation assessment by expert panels via a consensus process following RAM and (2) cross-sectional, web-based testing using a set of ECG questions. A multidisciplinary panel of experts will evaluate the answers and appropriateness and select 50 questions as the next step. Based on data collected from a predicted sample size of 438 test participants recruited from physicians, nurses, medical and nursing students, and other healthcare professionals, we plan to statistically analyse item parameters and participant performance using multidimensional item response theory. Additionally, we will attempt to detect possible latent factors in the competency of ECG interpretation. A test set of question items for ECG interpretation will be proposed on the basis of the extracted parameters.

The protocol of this study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of Ehime University Graduate School of Medicine (IRB number: 2209008). We will obtain informed consent from all participants. The findings will be submitted for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
