Abstract
OBJECTIVE Attention decoding plays a vital role in daily life, where electroencephalography (EEG) has been widely involved. However, training a universally effective model for everyone is impractical due to substantial interindividual variability in EEG signals. To tackle the above challenge, we propose an end-to-end brain-computer interface (BCI) framework, including temporal and spatial one-dimensional (1D) convolutional neural network and domain-adversarial training strategy, namely DA-TSnet. METHOD Specifically, DA-TSnet extracts temporal and spatial features of EEG, while it is jointly supervised by task loss and domain loss. During training, DA-TSnet aims to maximize the domain loss while simultaneously minimizing the task loss. We conduct an offline analysis, simulate online experiments on a self-collected dataset of 85 subjects, and real online experiments on 22 subjects. MAIN RESULTS DA-TSnet achieves a leave-one-subject-out (LOSO) cross-validation (CV) classification accuracy of 89.40% ± 9.96%, outperforming several state-of-the-art attention EEG decoding methods. In simulated online experiments, DA-TSnet achieves an outstanding accuracy of 88.07% ± 11.22%. In real online experiments, it achieves an average accuracy surpassing 86%. SIGNIFICANCE An end-to-end network framework does not rely on elaborate preprocessing and feature extraction steps, which saves time and human workload. Moreover, our framework utilizes domain-adversarial training neural network (DANN) to tackle the challenge posed by the high interindividual variability in EEG signals, which has significant reference value for handling other EEG signal decoding issues. Last, the performance of the DA-TSnet framework in offline and online experiments underscores its potential to facilitate more reliable applications.

Abstract
Smartphone use is nearly ubiquitous, with 93% of adults among economically developed countries, including the United States, Canada, Israel, and South Korea owning a smartphone (Taylor & Silver, 2019). Multiple studies have demonstrated the distracting effects of smartphone notifications on behavioral measures of cognition. Fewer studies have examined the effects of notifications on neural activity underlying higher-level cognitive processes or behavioral inductions to reduce smartphone-related distraction. Using EEG spectral frequency power densities, we assessed the effects of smartphone notifications (vs. control trials) on engagement of attentional shifting processes involved in cognitive control during a Navon Letter visual oddball task. Participants were randomly assigned to a brief mindfulness induction (N = 44) or a neutral narration control condition (N = 43). Overall, participants had lower theta-band power, but higher alpha- and beta-band power densities on target letter trials preceded by smartphone notifications. Additionally, participants in the mindfulness (vs. control) condition had a larger attention shifting oddball assessed via theta power density and theta/beta ratio (TBR) values-reflecting increased engagement of cognitive control-particularly on smartphone notification (vs. control) trials. Altogether, these results provide evidence supporting the idea that smartphone notifications can decrease activity of neural correlates of cognitive control, and offer the promise of a brief mindfulness induction to buffer against the effects of smartphone notifications on cognitive control. The findings indicate a need for further research on mindfulness inductiosn as a means to reduce potential distraction caused by smartphones.

Mindfulness Interventions for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. PSYCHIATRY INTERNATIONAL 2022. Abstract
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental condition impacting children and adults. Current treatments are limited and there is increasing interest in the use of mindfulness, which is growing in popularity. Previous systematic reviews have typically focused on specific ages, outcome measures or interventions. The current review aimed to take a more comprehensive approach. Title and abstract searches were performed in five databases for randomized and non-randomized controlled trials or pre-post studies with participants with an ADHD diagnosis or a score above a clinically relevant cut-off on a validated ADHD measure. Studies had to measure symptoms of ADHD, global or social functioning. Extraction of key information including participant status (i.e., diagnosis, scale scores, comorbidities, medication use), study design, and outcome measures was conducted. Effect sizes (Hedge’s g) were calculated and where a measure had been used in at least three studies with the same population, meta-analyses were considered. Twenty-nine studies were initially identified, with seven deemed poor quality and removed from further analysis leaving, 22 studies containing data from 1237 children and adults with ADHD along with data from 525 family members. The data indicate possible benefits of mindfulness on self-compassion, quality of life, wellbeing, depression, and anxiety. The findings also suggest that mindfulness may also improve ADHD symptoms, executive function, problematic behaviours, and emotional dysregulation, although results vary by age of patient and measures used. Parent stress and parenting style have received limited attention, highlighting the need for more studies in these areas. Whilst the data presented suggest that mindfulness may be beneficial, the evidence base is not as strong as the popularity of the approach. Many of the studies lacked blind assessment, adequate randomization, or suitable control conditions. As such high-quality controlled studies considering medication, other psychosocial interventions, use of active and in active controls and comorbidity as well as longer follow-up periods, are needed to confirm this.

Abstract
Different forms of mindfulness meditation are increasingly integrated in the clinical practice in the last three decades. Previous studies have identified changes in the neurophysiology and neurochemistry of the brain resulting from different mindfulness meditation practices in the general population. However, research on neural correlates of different types of meditation, particularly on the clinical outcomes, is still very sparse. Therefore, the aim of this article is to review the neural impact of mindfulness meditation interventions on different mental disorders via the classification of main components of mindfulness meditation. The clearer classification of mindfulness meditation may inform future clinical practice and research directions.

Abstract
Mindfulness meditation is a means of increasing awareness of the present moment. Mindfulness Mediation Interventions (MMI) positively impact psychological functioning, yet the neurocognitive mechanisms that mediate these effects have been less well-defined. Here, the primary aim was to evaluate whether the effects of a 10-week MMI were mediated by changes in attention and creativity performance, as well as resting-state theta/beta (TB) ratio and alpha power. We also sought to determine whether any of these measures at baseline were predictive of mindfulness success, as rated by the 7-11-year-old participants and their teachers. Reductions in depression from pre-to-post were mediated by reductions in TB ratio and increases in alpha power; however, they were not mediated by attention/creativity changes. Higher baseline attention and creativity scores predicted enhanced mindfulness success post-intervention but notably, follow-up analyses revealed that those scoring lower on these measures were more likely to have reduced depression from pre-to-post.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBIs) have been increasingly proposed as treatment in patients with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), showing promising results on different proposed outcomes, in both children and adults. OBJECTIVES To systematically review and meta-analyse studies concerning the effects of MBIs on either ADHD and associated features, associated clinical conditions, neurocognitive impairments, mindfulness skills, global functioning and quality of life. METHODS Searches were conducted on five databases, including controlled and observational studies on both adults and children populations. The review process was compliant to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA). Meta-analyses and meta-regression models were conducted. RESULTS Thirty-one full-texts were included. In both adults and children, MBIs showed to be more effective than waiting lists in improving ADHD symptoms and some other outcomes. In adults, a medium pooled effect size was shown by meta-analysis for ADHD symptoms but in some cases a publication bias was detected. Subgroup analysis and meta-regression confirmed the gap detected by our systematic review between the medium/large effect size of inactive-controlled studies and the low/negligible one of active-controlled studies. In children, no active-controlled studies have been conducted. Mindfulness Awareness Practice (MAP) and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) were the most used protocols in adult studies, whereas a combination of MBCT and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was more preferred for children and adolescent patients. CONCLUSIONS Even if further studies with a better methodology are needed, we can suggest the MBIs may be useful as complementation and not as replacement of other active interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Previous studies suggest that attentional bias and disengagement may vary as a function of Body Mass Index (BMI), most notably in a palatable food related context. Though this could indeed represent a food context specific effect, it could also represent a general reward related context effect. In addition, though mindfulness and stress have both been reported to affect attention, it is not yet clear whether these moderate the relationship between BMI and attention as a function of reward context. In the current study we addressed these questions. It was hypothesized that BMI would be positively associated with bias in a food context and money context relative to a neutral context. The inverse was expected for disengagement. It was expected that mindfulness would decrease these relationships and for stress the inverse was expected. METHODS In the current online study, eighty-seven participants (24 males and 63 females; age: M = 30.1, SD = 8.3; BMI: M = 24.2, SD = 4.67), filled out questionnaires and completed a visuospatial cueing task measuring attention and disengagement of attention in a neutral, food-related, and money-related condition. RESULTS There was no association between BMI and attentional bias. Higher BMI was associated with faster responses to money pictures presented opposite to a cued location as compared to money pictures that did not follow a predictive cue. Our results do not support a clear moderating role of mindfulness and stress. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION Our results imply faster processing and associated quicker responding to unanticipated reward-related stimuli in individuals with overweight or obesity.
