Abstract
Background Cyclosporine A (CsA) is used as a steroid-sparing or alternative immunosuppressing agent in cats with various immune-mediated diseases such as immune-mediated hemolytic anemia. Daily treatment dosages of 5-20 mg/kg have been described. Interindividual variations in CsA blood levels are known to occur. To determine when steady-state conditions are reached and thus the earliest advisable time for monitoring CsA blood levels during the course of treatment, a prospective experimental study was conducted in six healthy adult Domestic Shorthair cats. Materials and methods Cats were treated with an oral dosage of 7 mg/kg CsA q 12 h for 10 days. On days 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 10 after the start of CsA administration (i.e., after 1, 3, 5, 9, 13, and 19 CsA administrations), EDTA blood was collected to measure the CsA level 12 h after the CsA administration (trough values) using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). Results Statistical analysis revealed a significant increase in mean CsA blood levels up to day 5 (2,050 ± 964.2 ng/mL [mean ± SD], 832-3,203 ng/mL [minimum-maximum]; repeated-measures ANOVA: p = 0.0021), while values on days 5 and 7 did not differ significantly from CsA concentrations on day 10. CsA concentrations showed markedly interindividual variability. Conclusion Cyclosporine A blood levels reached a steady state on day 5 of high dosages of CsA q 12 h (i.e., after nine CsA administrations), indicating that this time point is suitable for monitoring blood levels in clinical patients. Results confirmed the well-known remarkable interindividual variability of CsA, indicating the need for treatment monitoring. The assessed treatment regime resulted in significantly higher mean CsA trough levels than the target range for immunosuppressive therapy (200-600 ng/mL).

Abstract
Background and Aim Anemia, a clinical condition characterized by reduced erythrocytes, is often observed in cats. Regeneration indicates that the bone marrow can respond appropriately to anemia. The absolute reticulocyte count is the reference for differentiating regenerative and non-regenerative anemia, while red blood cell (RBC) indices and morphology provide supplementary information. This study aimed to identify anemia types and establish the most reliable RBC indices and morphology methods in agreement with the reference method. Materials and Methods One hundred forty-five cases of cat anemia were prospectively classified using two methods: RBC indices and RBC morphology, and subsequently compared with the absolute reticulocyte count. Results Based on RBC indices assessment, 27 cases (19%) exhibited regenerative anemia. Based on RBC morphology, 29 (20%) cases were identified as having regenerative anemia. Using the reticulocyte absolute count as a reference method, 34 (23.4%) cases of regenerative anemia were identified. The findings indicated that RBC indices and RBC morphology did not align in evaluating medullary regeneration and that there is a good degree of agreement between RBC morphology assessment and the reticulocyte absolute count in identifying regenerative anemias. Conclusion Blood smear analysis of RBC morphology was more dependable for classifying regenerative anemia than RBC indices. Further studies should be conducted with a larger number of animals and that allow the identification of the cause of anemia and the monitoring of the animal.

Abstract
CASE SERIES SUMMARY A total of 1692 medical records from a primary care feline practice and a veterinary referral hospital were evaluated retrospectively to assess discordant feline leukemia virus (FeLV) test results. In total, 73 cats were positive for FeLV using serum in a lateral flow immunoassay (LFI) or laboratory-based ELISA. Of these cats, 21 subsequently tested negative for FeLV proviral DNA by non-quantitative PCR on EDTA whole blood (16/21, 76.2%), bone marrow (4/21, 19%) or both (1/21, 4.7%). The proportional morbidity (an estimate of prevalence in a sample of the total population) for FeLV by LFI/ELISA and PCR assays was 3.1%, consistent with that reported in previous studies for cats in North America. Cats with discordant LFI/ELISA and PCR results had either primary bone marrow disease (18 autoimmune, one neoplastic), a bone marrow insult (hemotrophic mycoplasmosis) or systemic inflammation (pyothorax with a marked neutrophilic leukocytosis). The percentage of cats with a positive LFA/ELISA result and negative PCR assay surviving to discharge was 85.7% (18/21). Of these, 88.9% (16/18) survived 4 months to 6 years. Seven cats (33.3%) were re-tested with LFI or ELISA once primary disease was controlled, and all tested negative. RELEVANCE AND NOVEL INFORMATION These findings indicate that in cats with bone marrow disease that shares features of progressive FeLV infection, positive LFI and ELISA FeLV test results should be followed up with FeLV proviral DNA PCR testing, particularly in populations where disease prevalence is low.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Xenotransfusion is the transfusion of blood from one species to another. With varying availability of allogenic feline blood (AFB) and in emergency conditions, circumstances occur when canine blood is transfused to cats. This study aimed to characterise the indications, effectiveness, limitations, and acute and late transfusion-related adverse effects of canine blood xenotransfusion compared with matched AFB to anaemic cats, and their survival and longer-term outcome. METHODS This retrospective study (2013-2020) examined cats receiving canine blood xenotransfusions or AFB. RESULTS The study included 311 cats (xenotransfusion [X-group], n = 105; allotransfusion [A-group], n = 206). Xenotransfusion was more frequent among cats sustaining haemorrhage than in those with haemolysis (P <0.01) or hypoproliferative anaemia (P <0.001). Financial constraints were the most common reason to elect xenotransfusion (49%). The post-transfusion mean packed cell volume was higher (P <0.001) in the X-group (22%) compared with the A-group (18%), and also higher (P <0.001) at 48-96 h post-transfusion (23% vs 18%, respectively). Transfusion-related adverse effects (TRAEs) were more frequent (P = 0.001) in the X-group (37.1%) compared with the A-group (19.4%), as were delayed haemolytic transfusion reactions (85% vs 42.5%, respectively; P <0.001). Acute transfusion reactions (ATRs) were more frequent (P <0.001) in the A-group (60%) compared with the X-group (20%). TRAEs were unassociated with survival to discharge. The survival to discharge rate of the X-group (55%) was lower (P = 0.007) than in the A-group (73%), while post-discharge survival rates to 30 days of cats surviving to discharge were 90% and 88%, respectively (P = 0.85). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Canine blood xenotransfusions to cats might save lives in emergency conditions when AFB is unavailable or blood typing is infeasible. The survival to discharge rate of the X-group was lower than that of the A-group. The longer-term survival rate of cats administered xenotransfusions and surviving to discharge from the hospital was good.

Abstract
Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the blood of cats in Colorado, USA, with suspected infectious causes of anemia for the presence of Babesia species and Cytauxzoon felis DNA. Results of PCR testing for other common vector-borne diseases potentially associated with anemia are also reported. Methods Samples from 101 cats were tested using a PCR assay that coamplified the DNA of C felis and Babesia species mitochondrial DNA. PCR testing for DNA of hemoplasmas, Bartonella species, Ehrlichia species, Anaplasma species, Neorickettsia risticii and Wolbachia genera was also performed if not carried out previously. Results Twenty-two cats (21.8%) were positive for DNA of an infectious agent. DNA from hemoplasma species were amplified from 14 cats (13.9%). Bartonella species DNA was amplified from four cats (4%) and Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma platys, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Wolbachia genera DNA were amplified from one cat each. Babesia species and C felis mitochondrial DNA were not amplified from any sample. Conclusions and relevance Based on the results of this study, it does not appear that Babesia species or C felis are clinically relevant in anemic cats in Colorado, USA. For C felis, this suggests that the vector Amblyomma americanum is still uncommon in this geographic area.

Abstract
PRACTICAL RELEVANCE Blood and blood products are increasingly available for practitioners to use in the management of haematological conditions, and can be lifesaving and therapeutically useful for patients with anaemia and/or coagulopathies. It is important for feline healthcare that donors are selected appropriately, and transfusions of blood or blood products are given to recipients that will benefit from them. Complications can occur, but can be largely avoided with careful donor management and recipient selection, understanding of blood type compatibility, and transfusion monitoring. CLINICAL CHALLENGES Feline blood transfusion, while potentially a lifesaving procedure, can also be detrimental to donor and recipient without precautions. Cats have naturally occurring alloantibodies to red cell antigens and severe reactions can occur with type-mismatched transfusions. Blood transfusions can also transmit infectious agents to the recipient, so donor testing is essential. Finally, donors must be in good health, and sedated as appropriate, with blood collected in a safe and sterile fashion to optimise the benefit to recipients. Transfusion reactions are possible and can be mild to severe in nature. Autologous blood transfusions and xenotransfusions may be considered in certain situations. EVIDENCE BASE These Guidelines have been created by a panel of authors convened by the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM), based on available literature. They are aimed at general practitioners to provide a practical guide to blood typing, cross-matching, and blood collection and administration.

Abstract
A 10-year-old spayed female mixed-breed cat presented with progressive nonregenerative anemia. Clinicopathological abnormalities included severe
nonregenerative anemia (packed cell volume [PCV]: 7%, aggregate reticulocytes: 1.12 × 103/µl) and a hypoechogenic mass
well-localized in the stomach. Bone marrow (BM) smears revealed increased particle hematopoietic cellularity with decreased myeloid:erythroid (M:E) ratios, no
dysplasia of any lineage, and presence of erythroid precursors phagocytized by macrophages. The cat was diagnosed with presumptive precursor-targeted
immune-mediated anemia (PIMA). The stomach mass was consistent with CD 20 positive T-cell lymphoma. The lymphoma was completely resected via surgery, and the
PIMA was cured by immunosuppressive therapy. On day 410, both diseases have not recurred without medications. This is the first report of feline PIMA and
concurrent gastrointestinal lymphoma.
