The evolution of publication hotspots in the field of telemedicine from 1962 to 2015 and differences among six countries

Identifying emerging topics in the peer-reviewed literature to facilitate curriculum renewal and development

This article reports a bibliometric analysis of emerging topics in the psychiatric literature indexed in the MEDLINE database as a technique for renewal of clinical training curricula. Summary data of English-language articles indexed in the MEDLINE database between 1971-2018 were downloaded. Emerging topics in nine demi-decades between 1972-1976 and 2012-2016 were identified by the incremental incidence of individual Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) compared with previous years. Co-word analysis was used to investigate and visualise the relationships between emerging topics in each demi-decade. Summaries of 18 million articles annotated with psychiatric/psychological MeSH were retrieved and used to identify emerging topics. Peaks in the number of articles annotated by the top 20 emerging topics in 9 demi-decades coincided with release of the third and fourth editions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual which codifies psychiatric diagnoses. Themes emerging from network visualisations of the most common emerging MeSH in each demi-decade were consistent with movements in psychiatric/psychological theory and practice since the 1970s, including the recent focus on psychological and social factors implicated in suicide and suicide prevention. The identification of emerging topics within the published medical literature is a viable technique for use in curriculum renewal projects as a counterweight to biases driven by expert judgement. While indices like MEDLINE make the published literature an appealing initial step in building an empirical basis for curriculum development, it also demonstrates the potential value of less public and less structured data, such as health service electronic medical records.

Publication trends in telemedicine research originating from Canada

Telemedicine modalities for patient care have seen significant global uptake during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to bibliometrically evaluate the evolution and current landscape of telemedicine literature in Canada. The Scopus database was searched to identify telemedicine publications for which the first or last author had a Canadian institutional affiliation. Study selection and data abstraction were conducted by two pairs of independent reviewers. Between 1976 and January 2021, 810 of 3,620 retrieved citations were telemedicine publications originating from Canada, including 29 randomized controlled trials and 6 systematic reviews. The annual publication output increased substantially from 1/year in 1976 to 80/year in 2020. Based on author keyword analysis, the most frequently investigated disciplines or disease entities were primary care, COVID-19, telepsychiatry, heart failure, and mental health. The insights this study provides will aid scientists, policy makers, and other stakeholders in identifying opportunities for future investigation and clinical application.

The Evolution of Publication Hotspots in Electronic Health Records from 1957 to 2016 and Differences Among Six Countries

This study aims to reveal the evolution of publication hotspots in the field of electronic health records (EHRs) and differences among countries. We applied keyword frequency analysis, keyword co-occurrence analysis, principal component analysis, multidimensional scaling analysis, and visualization technology to compare the high-frequency Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms in six countries during the periods 1957-2008 and 2009-2016. After 2009, the number of MeSH terms reflecting information exchange and information mining increased, and various types of evaluations based on EHRs and cohort studies significantly increased. The top 20 MeSH terms between 2009 and 2016 constitute five relatively larger knowledge groups. Thus, we conclude that publication hotspots in EHR field have shifted from issues related to the adoption of EHRs to the utilization of EHRs, and the knowledge structure has become systematic. The publication's focus was different in the six countries, which may relate to their national characteristics.
