Concepts of Resilience in Adolescent Mental Health Research

PURPOSE

Strengthening the resilience of adolescents is central to promoting long-term mental health outcomes, but resilience is a widely used term, often applied in different ways. We explored how resilience is understood in the adolescent mental health literature and developed a framework that synthesizes the core characteristics of different resilience concepts.

METHODS

Systematic searches of electronic databases, hand searches of reference lists and known work on resilience, and multidisciplinary team discussions were employed, and articles with explicit conceptualizations of resilience in adolescent mental health literature were included. After screening 9,562 articles, 105 articles were retained, analyzed and used to refine a framework.

RESULTS

Three dimensions capture the various concepts of resilience, each with two end points: (1) resilience as withstanding adversity without any distress versus overcoming the distress resulting from adversity; (2) resilience as an existing trait versus as a process over time; and (3) resilience of individuals versus resilience of groups.

CONCLUSION

Concepts of resilience in adolescence can be clearly categorized within three distinct dimensions. Referring to this framework may help to clarify and compare different concepts of resilience of adolescents in mental health research as well as at a policy level and in clinical contexts.

A Resilience-Based Intervention Programme to Enhance Psychological Well-Being and Protective Factors for Rural-to-Urban Migrant Children in China

BACKGROUND

The current study evaluated the preliminary efficacy of a pilot trial of a resilience-based intervention programme designed to decrease depression symptoms and improve protective factors (e.g. personal assets, social resources, cultural adaptation self-efficacy, interpreting adversity, and self-esteem) among rural-to-urban migrant children in China.

METHODS

Participants were 285 fourth and fifth graders from two migrant children schools in Beijing. One school was cluster-randomly assigned as the intervention group (n = 127) and the other was assigned as the wait-list control group (n = 158). Data were collected at baseline and post-intervention with a follow-up rate of 96.8 per cent.

RESULTS

Multivariate analyses found significantly greater increases in social resources, cultural adaptation self-efficacy, and making positive sense of adversity in the intervention group than in the control group. In the intervention group, migrant children who had moved more often reported a higher increase in personal assets than those who had fewer mobility experience.

CONCLUSION

The findings suggest that the resilience-based intervention can be efficacious in improving resilience among migrant children in China.

Future orientation buffers depression in daily and specific stress

Future orientation has been regarded as a protective factor that helps prevent problem behaviors, such as drug and alcohol use, smoking, and unprotected sex. Recently, many studies have focused on the relationship between a person's orientation towards the future and his or her depression symptoms; however, relatively few studies have explored the effect of future orientation on depressive responses to ordinary stress. The present study aimed to test whether future orientation could be a protective factor against depression in ordinary stress contexts. We conducted two studies to test this hypothesis and recruited 369 participants. Study 1 was a cross-sectional study that involved 217 employees from a food-processing company and examined the effect of future orientation in a daily stress context. Study 2 tested a hierarchical linear model in which 152 college students from an examination training institution in Beijing completed a five-wave assessment with 3-week intervals before taking the national entrance examination for postgraduate studies. The results showed that future orientation moderated the stress-depression relationship in the two samples. The present study provides evidence supporting the hypothesis that future orientation helps individuals cope with stress and protects people from depression, suggesting that future orientation plays a protective role in the stress-depression relationship.

Human Thriving

Abstract. Human beings have an inherent drive for self-improvement and growth ( Maslow, 1965 ; Ryan & Deci, 2002 ). In a quest to understand how human beings achieve fulfillment, researchers have sought to explain why some individuals thrive in certain situations, whereas others merely survive or succumb. The topic of thriving has become popular with scholars, resulting in a divergent body of literature and a lack of consensus on the key processes that underpin the construct. In view of such differences, the purpose of this paper is threefold: (i) to review a number of existing theoretical and conceptual debates, and to propose a conceptualization of thriving applicable across different populations and domains; (ii) to consolidate pertinent bodies of extant thriving research and identify key personal and contextual enablers to inform applied practice; and (iii) to identify noteworthy gaps within existing literature so as to make recommendations for future research and, ultimately, support the development of effective psychosocial interventions for thriving.

Traumatic exposure and posttraumatic stress disorder among flood victims: Testing a multiple mediating model

A total of 187 flood victims from Wuhu, a Chinese city affected most severely by a flood during July 2016, were selected to complete self-report measures of traumatic exposure, feelings of safety, fear, posttraumatic negative cognition, and posttraumatic stress disorder. The results found that traumatic exposure could directly predict posttraumatic stress disorder. Besides, traumatic exposure had indirect prediction on posttraumatic stress disorder through three ways, including a one-step path of negative self-cognition, a two-step path from feelings of safety to fear, and a three-step path from feelings of safety to negative self-cognition via fear. Implications and future directions are correspondingly discussed.
