Perceived social support predicts self-reported and objective health and health behaviors among pregnant women

Perinatal health and health behaviors play a crucial role in maternal and neonatal health. Data examining psychosocial factors which predict self-reported health and health behaviors as well as objective indicators downstream of health behaviors among pregnant women are lacking. In this longitudinal study design with 131 pregnant women, perceived social support was examined as a predictor of self-rated health and average levels of sleep quality, health-promoting and health-impairing behaviors, and red blood cell (RBC) polyunsaturated fatty acids across early, mid, and late pregnancy. Participants provided a blood sample and fatty acid methyl esters were analyzed by gas chromatography. Measures included the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Prenatal Health Behavior Scale. Regression models demonstrated that, after adjustment for income, race/ethnicity, age, relationship status, pre-pregnancy body mass index, greater social support was associated with better self-rated health (p = 0.001), greater sleep quality (p = 0.001), fewer health-impairing behaviors (p = 0.02), and higher RBC omega-3 fatty acids (p = 0.003). Associations among social support with health-promoting behaviors, RBC omega-6 fatty acids, or gestational weight gain were not significant. Findings underscore the benefits of perceived social support in the context of pregnancy. Examination of pathways that link social support with these outcomes will be meaningful in determining the ways in which perinatal psychosocial interventions may promote health.

Factors Associated With Self-Perception in Oral Health of Pregnant Women

Background

Health perception is a subjective predictor of long-term morbidity and mortality. Few studies address the perception that pregnant women have of their oral health.

Objective

The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between socioeconomic factors and self-assessment of oral health in pregnant women from Cali, Colombia.

Method

A cross-sectional study was carried out with a sample of 998 pregnant women, calculated using the formula to estimate a proportion in finite populations, with a confidence level of 95%. A questionnaire was applied for sociodemographic characterization, as well as to enquire about oral health perception, knowledge, and practices of oral health.

Results

The mean age of the surveyed mothers was 24.7, with a standard deviation of 6.1, of which 23.6% were adolescents. The perception they had about their oral health status was considered good by 60.8%. Of the 82.9% who reported having attended dentistry, more than half perceived good oral health. Pregnant women with no history of oral problems, with a perception of medium or high income, and with good oral hygiene practices tend to have a good perception of their oral health.

Conclusion

Pregnant women with no history of oral problems, with a perception of medium or high income, and with good oral hygiene practices tend to have a good perception of their oral health.

Women with non-Swedish speaking background and their children: a longitudinal study of uptake of care and maternal and child health

AIM

To study uptake of care at the antenatal and child health clinic (CHC), and maternal and child health up to 5 years after the birth, as reported by mothers with a non-Swedish speaking background (NSB).

METHODS

A sample of 300 women with a NSB, 175 originated from a poor country and 125 originated from a rich country, were compared with a reference group of 2761 women with a Swedish speaking background. Four postal questionnaires were completed: during pregnancy, and 2 months, 1 year and 5 years after the birth.

RESULTS

Mothers with a NSB from a poor country of origin did not differ from the reference group of mothers with a Swedish speaking background regarding number of clinic visits, but they had a lower attendance rate at antenatal and postnatal education classes. Depressive symptoms, parental stress and poor self-rated health were more common in these women, and they reported more psychological and behavioral problems in their 5-year olds. Women with a rich country origin did not differ from the reference group regarding maternal and child health, but had a lower uptake of all out-patient care, except parental classes after the birth.

CONCLUSION

Women originating from a poor country seem to be under great stress during pregnancy and the child's first years.

Symptoms across pregnancy in relation to psychosocial and biomedical factors

BACKGROUND

There is current interest in symptoms during pregnancy, but yet little is known about their prevalence and how often they are experienced across pregnancy. The reasons why some women experience more symptoms or experience them more often than others has received limited research attention.

OBJECTIVE

To document the prevalence and frequency of 27 pregnancy symptoms and to systematically investigate, cross-sectionally and prospectively, the effect of psychosocial factors on the prevalence and frequency of these symptoms, while controlling for biomedical factors.

METHODS

Four hundred and seventy-six nulliparous Scandinavian women who attended routine prenatal care in Uppsala county, Sweden, were studied six times during pregnancy (gestational weeks 10, 12, 20, 28, 32, and 36).

RESULTS

The prevalence of symptoms was high, but only a smaller portion of these symptoms were experienced frequently. Psychological stress particularly contributed to the prevalence and frequency of concurrent symptoms and predicted symptoms up to 16 weeks later, independent of medical risk, smoking, and weight gain.

CONCLUSIONS

Prevalence rates may be inflated, because many symptoms were experienced only 'occasionally' during each of the 4-week periods we sampled. By examining how frequently symptoms were experienced, we gained an indication of which symptoms are more likely to be bothersome or intrude upon daily activities. Psychosocial variables accounted for individual differences in symptom reports after taking biomedical factors into account. Attention to psychosocial variables in future studies will aid in our understanding of the etiology of pregnancy symptoms.
