Knowledge of HIV infection and the fear of mixing socially with HIV-infected and AIDS-sick patients among STD patients in Bergen, Norway

Knowledge, attitudes and sources of information regarding HIV/AIDS in Iranian adolescents

The World Health Organization recently reported an 'alarming trend' of increasing Human Deficiency Virus (HIV) infection in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Adolescents form a particularly important target group for primary prevention. An anonymous questionnaire, derived from standard surveys such as the Safer Choices questionnaire and the 2001 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, was distributed to 1227 Iranian students attending 19 randomly selected high schools in Hashtgerd in 2002. Students reported that television (84%) and school teachers (66%) were the best sources of HIV/AIDS information, while parents (27%) and school books (15%) were least informative. Most students knew that heterosexual intercourse (90%) and shared intravenous needles (94%) can cause HIV infection; however, salient misconceptions were revealed. Only 53% were aware that condoms protect against infection through sexual intercourse. More effective school-based HIV/AIDS education is needed in Iran.

A decade of HIV/AIDS prevention in Sweden: changes in attitudes associated with HIV and sexual risk behaviour from 1987 to 1997

OBJECTIVE

The objective of the present study was to monitor the changes in determinants of HIV-related attitudes and behaviour over a 10 year period.

DESIGN/METHODS

In the past decade, over 11,000 individuals in Sweden participated in this repeated cross-sectional study to assess the changes in attitudes and behaviour associated with HIV. Changes in the fear of persons who are HIV seropositive, optimism that scientists will find a cure or vaccine for HIV/AIDS, engagement in discussions concerning HIV/AIDS as well as condom use, the number of sexual partners, and frequency of unprotected casual sex were assessed during four study years, 1987, 1989, 1994, and 1997.

RESULTS

The findings of this study suggest that changes in attitudes regarding HIV were more robust whereas only modest changes in sexual behaviour were observed. The fear of HIV-seropositive persons, optimism that a cure or vaccine would be developed, and engagement in discussions concerning HIV all decreased over the 10 year period. A trend in increased condom use was observed, particularly in younger participants, but little change in sex with multiple partners and unprotected casual sex was observed between 1987 and 1997.

CONCLUSION

Changes in attitudes regarding HIV are usually more often observed than changes in sexual behaviour. However, increased condom use in younger participants may be reflective of secular changes in sexual behaviour that may facilitate the prevention of HIV in Sweden.

HIV/AIDS--information and knowledge: a comparative study of Kenyan and Swedish teenagers

Knowledge of hiv/aids, exposure to hiv/aids information and appreciation of given information was studied, by a questionnaire, among 326 Kenyan and 146 Swedish teenage school students in 1994. The aim of the study was to examine differences and similarities in knowledge in the two populations and to examine which sources of information about hiv and aids the respondents had been exposed to and which were most appreciated. The overall knowledge about hiv/aids was high but in specific items the knowledge and awareness of different risk behaviours for contracting hiv/aids differed for the Kenyan and Swedish teenagers. The dissemination of hard factual information about hiv/aids has thus been successful in reaching out although not in stopping the spread of hiv/aids. This calls for new strategies in disease prevention and health promotion. Those strategies should focus much more on lifestyle changes. The health care system, the school and the existing strong civil and voluntary information structures have an important role to play in that work.
