YouTube as a resource for evaluating the unmet needs of caregivers of stroke survivors

Presurgical Infant Orthopedic Videos on YouTube™: A Thematic Analysis of Caregiver Narratives

OBJECTIVE

Information regarding how caregivers cope when using presurgical infant orthopedic (PSIO) appliances is sparse. This study aimed to understand caregivers' perspectives and experiences with contemporary PSIO treatment.

DESIGN

PSIO videos shared on the YouTube™ platform were used as the data source. Videos with caregivers were identified (n = 21) and portions with caregiver narratives were transcribed. This was followed by the application of a six-step thematic analysis as conceptualized by Braun and Clarke (2006, 2019).

RESULTS

Two themes were identified from the caregiver narratives in the PSIO videos. The Family Journey theme included reaction to diagnosis, choice of center, burden of care, care commitment, coping, and testimonials. The Information theme included PSIO techniques and PSIO benefits.

CONCLUSION

Multifaceted challenges and coping strategies were described by caregivers during the PSIO phase. Caregivers remained committed to treatment despite the burden of care, were motivated by an understanding of the benefits of PSIO, and customized care based on their individual strengths and needs. Study results can help providers gain an understanding of what caregivers experience outside the clinical environment.

Use of Social Media in Stroke: A Systematic Review

Background

Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability globally. Over the last decade, digital health and related technology has emerged as a useful adjunct in the management of persons with stroke, particularly with the development of a large number of mobile phone applications dedicated to various aspects of stroke. However, whether social media can provide similar key support in stroke is an intriguing question. In this systematic review, we aimed to the scope and limits of social media platforms in care and research pertinent to persons with stroke.

Methods

PubMed database was searched using Medical Subject Headings terms and exploded keywords. The search retrieved 556 abstracts, which were screened by two reviewers. Of these, 14 studies met the review inclusion criteria. Given the small number of studies and heterogeneity of outcomes, quantitative analysis was not possible. The review was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42022324384).

Results

The social media platforms employed by the included studies comprised YouTube (n = 5), Twitter (n = 5), Facebook (n = 2), both Twitter and Facebook (n = 1), and WhatsApp (n = 1). Four assessed quality and accuracy of videos on YouTube available for stoke patients and caregivers. Three used social media to research link between role of gender and stroke descriptors on social media platforms, and one studied Twitter-derived racial/ethnic perceptual construction on the occurrence of cardiovascular disease. Three studies described use of social media by stroke survivors, in post-stroke care and engagement. 11 studies were assessed to be of "fair" quality and three were assessed to be of "poor" quality.

Conclusions

Limited preliminary data of low quality indicates that social media is used by persons with stroke and their caregivers, and may be harnessed as a tool of education and research. Future studies must address the current lack of high-quality evidence for the use of social media in stroke care.

Quality analysis of YouTube videos on mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke

OBJECTIVES

Acute ischemic stroke is a leading cause of mortality and long-term disability. Mechanical thrombectomy can effectively treat large artery occlusions. This study aimed to evaluate the quality, reliability, and usefulness of videos on mechanical thrombectomy on YT using quantitative and qualitative analyses.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Video searches were performed by entering the following keywords into the YT search bar: "endovascular thrombectomy," "endovascular treatment of acute stroke," "mechanical thrombectomy," "stroke stent retriever," and "stent retriever thrombectomy." For each search term, the top 35 videos were reviewed. The videos were analyzed by two independent raters using the DISCERN and JAMA scoring systems. Qualitative and quantitative data were recorded for each video.

RESULTS

A total of 150 videos were analyzed. The mean DISCERN score was 41.26, and the mean JAMA score was 1.42. Of the videos, 5.3% were categorized as very poor, 33.3% as poor, 44% as fair, 12% as good, and 5.3% as excellent. The videos that included qualitative features, such as clear information, symptomatology, diagnosis, treatment response, prognosis, etiology, epidemiology, diagram, and radiological image, had significantly higher DISCERN and JAMA scores than their counterparts.

CONCLUSION

A reliable and useful content is not available for individuals searching for information on mechanical thrombectomy on YT. In this paper, we highlighted key points for content creators to increase the quality and audience engagement statistics of their videos. Information provided in YT videos should be verified using more reliable sources.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in social media: Content analysis of YouTube videos

The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics, content, and quality of information available on YouTube regarding amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and explore the search results and number of views and quality of the videos. A search was performed on YouTube on 10 June 2020, using the search term ''Lou Gehrig's disease" in the Korean language, and the first 100 videos were targeted for analysis. General characteristics (e.g., number of views, video length, etc.) were collected, and upload source, target audience, subject of the video, and quality of the videos using a global quality score (GQS) were assessed. About two-thirds of the videos were for the general public (62.0%), while the other third were made for patients and their families with ALS (38.0%). The mean GQS was 3.70 ± 1.42, and 60 videos were classified as high-quality videos. ALS-related videos on YouTube play a role in raising awareness among the general public of this devastating disease, however, practical information regarding disease management for patients and family is relatively insufficient. The quality and characteristics of the videos varied greatly and sometimes the lowest quality videos were shown in the top pages of search results.
