The associations of information system's support and nurses' documentation competence with the detection of documentation-related errors: Results from a nationwide survey

Construction and application on the training course of information literacy for clinical nurses

DESIGN

A two-round Delphi survey was conducted to seek opinions from experts about the index system for the evaluation of training courses of clinical nursing staff's information literacy. Besides, a non-randomized controlled experimental study was adopted to check the application effect of the training courses.

AIMS

This study intended to construct a training course of information literacy for clinical nurses, train nurses in order to improve their information literacy level and provide theoretical reference for the training of information literacy courses for clinical nurses.

METHODS

Two rounds of Delphi study were conducted for the study among 26 clinical medical and nursing experts as well as educational experts from 5 different provinces and cities in China. From July 2022 to October 2022, a total of 84 clinical nurses from two hospitals were selected by the convenience sampling method, of which the nurses in one hospital were the control group and the nurses in the other hospital were the observation group. 42 nurses in the observation group were trained by the constructed information literacy training course. Questionnaire evaluation was used to compare the differences in the level of information literacy of nurses and the training effect between the two groups.

RESULTS

The results of the Delphi consultation showed that the expert's judgment coefficient was 0.958, the expert's familiarity was 0.946, and the expert's authority coefficient was 0.952. Finally, a training course of information literacy for clinical nurses with 4 course categories and 45 specific course contents was formed. Among them, nursing information awareness included 7 courses, nursing information knowledge 15 courses, nursing information ability 19 courses, and nursing information ethics 4 courses. The results of the empirical study showed that the information literacy level of the nurses in the observation group after the training of the information literacy course was improved, and the scores in nursing information awareness, nursing information knowledge, nursing information ability, and information ethics were significantly higher than those in the control group after training (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

The constructed information literacy training courses for clinical nurses were clearly targeted and systematic. Empirical research showed that the course contents were scientific and reasonable, which could provide reference for the training of clinical nurses' information literacy.

Perception of Health Teams on the Implementation of Strategies to Decrease Nursing Errors and Enhance Patient Safety

Background

Patient care is a public health issue all over the world, with nursing errors in hospitals being a significant source of harm to patients and a hindrance to the healthcare system's efficiency.

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to investigate health teams' perceptions of strategies used to reduce nursing error that affects patient safety.

Patients and Methods

A descriptive study was conducted from January to March 2022 at Najran University Hospital and KKH to better understand the issue. The study included 400 healthcare team members, including nurses, physicians, nurse aides, health workers, and others. The data was collected through the analysis of the health team's characteristics, nursing errors, and strategies for error reduction.

Results

The results of the study led to the development of five strategies and 28 interventions aimed at reducing nursing errors. The study revealed that two-thirds of the participants had a high perception of strategies for reducing nursing errors, while one-third had a low perception.

Conclusion

The study highlights the importance of addressing nursing errors in the healthcare system and provides evidence-based strategies and interventions to reduce them. The findings emphasize the need for ongoing efforts to enhance the perception and understanding of healthcare professionals in reducing errors and improving patient care.

Using standardized nursing data for knowledge generation - Ward level analysis of point of care nursing documentation

BACKGROUND

Standardized nursing terminology is a prerequisite for describing nursing care processes and generating knowledge for decision-making and management. The structure of the Finnish Care Classification (FinCC) facilitates documentation of nationally agreed core nursing data: nursing diagnoses, interventions, and outcomes.

PURPOSE

To analyze the use of FinCC to assess patient care needs (nursing diagnoses), care implementations (interventions) and evaluation of the outcomes of nursing care in electronic health records.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

The descriptive study applied purposeful sampling of nursing data from nursing data repositories in three surgical wards in tertiary and secondary care hospitals. The aggregated, anonymous ward level data from a six-month period was analyzed to show distributions within frequencies and means of component, main and subcategory level use of FinCC in the three hospitals.

RESULTS

Each of the three levels of the FinCC (component, main and subcategory) were used for recording nursing care. In all hospitals, the three most used diagnosis components covered about one third of the use of all the 17 components. The five most used intervention components cover about one third of the components. The most often used components for diagnoses and interventions were Coordination of care and follow-up care, Pain Management, Activities of daily living and independence and Medication. The prevalence of different components and the main and subcategory level usage for both diagnoses and interventions varied between the hospitals.

CONCLUSION

Standardized point-of-care nursing data makes patients' daily nursing care transparent. Structured, standardized, and point-of-care nursing data can be utilized to generate new knowledge of nursing care processes and nursing care practice at ward level.
