Abstract
Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are formed in in vivo, and accumulate in tissues and body fluids during ageing. Endogenous AGE-modified proteins show altered structure and function, and may interact with receptor for AGEs (RAGE) resulting in production of reactive oxygen species, inflammatory, atherogenic and diabetogenic responses. AGEs are also formed in thermally processed foods. Studies in rodents document that dietary AGEs are partially absorbed into circulation, and accumulate in different tissues. Knowledge on the health effects of high dietary intake of AGEs is incomplete and contradictory. In this overview we discuss the data from experimental and clinical studies, either those supporting the assumption that restriction of dietary AGEs associated with health benefits, or data suggesting that dietary intake of AGEs associates with positive health outcomes. We polemicize whether the effects of exaggerated intake or restriction of highly thermally processed foods might be straightforward interpreted as the effects of AGEs-rich vs. AGEs-restricted diets. We also underline the lack of studies, and thus a poor knowledge, on the effects of different single chemically defined AGEs administration, concurrent intake of different dietary AGEs, of load with dietary AGEs corresponding to the habitual diet in humans, and on those of dietary AGEs in vulnerable populations, such as infants and particularly elderly.

Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a prevalent cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. A hallmark of CKD progression is renal fibrosis characterized by excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins. In this study, we aimed to investigate the correlation of the urinary proteome classifier CKD273 and individual urinary peptides with the degree of fibrosis. In total, 42 kidney biopsies and urine samples were examined. The percentage of fibrosis per total tissue area was assessed in Masson trichrome stained kidney tissues. The urinary proteome was analysed by capillary electrophoresis coupled to mass spectrometry. CKD273 displayed a significant and positive correlation with the degree of fibrosis (Rho = 0.430, P = 0.0044), while the routinely used parameters (glomerular filtration rate, urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio and urine protein-to-creatinine ratio) did not (Rho = -0.222; -0.137; -0.070 and P = 0.16; 0.39; 0.66, respectively). We identified seven fibrosis-associated peptides displaying a significant and negative correlation with the degree of fibrosis. All peptides were collagen fragments, suggesting that these may be causally related to the observed accumulation of ECM in the kidneys. CKD273 and specific peptides are significantly associated with kidney fibrosis; such an association could not be detected by other biomarkers for CKD. These non-invasive fibrosis-related biomarkers can potentially be implemented in future trials.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and diabetes mellitus (DM) are considered as risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship of CKD and DM with the presence of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). METHODS We enrolled 261 patients with AAA (AAA+) and age-and-sex matched 261 patients without AAA (AAA-) at two hospitals between 2008 and 2014, and examined the association between the risk factors and the presence of AAA. Furthermore, in order to investigate the prevalence of AAA in each group, we enrolled 1126 patients with CKD and 400 patients with DM. RESULTS The presence of CKD in patients with AAA+ was significantly higher than that in patients with AAA- (AAA+; 65%, AAA-; 52%, P = 0.004). The presence of DM in patients with AAA+ was significantly lower than that in patients with AAA- (AAA+; 17%, AAA-; 35%, P < 0.001). A multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that hypertension, ischemic heart disease and CKD were independent determinants, whereas, DM was a negatively independent determinant, for the presence of AAA. The prevalence of AAA in patients with CKD 65 years old and above was 5.1%, whereas, that in patients with DM 65 years old and above was only 0.6%. CONCLUSION CKD is a positively associated with the presence of AAA. In contrast, DM is a negatively associated with the presence of AAA in Japanese population.

Abstract
We performed a meta-analysis to assess the association of diabetes mellitus (DM) with the presence of thoracic aortic dissection (TAD) and/or thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA). MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched through December 2015 using PubMed and OVID. For each study, data regarding DM prevalence in both the TAD/TAA and control groups were used to generate unadjusted odds ratios (ORs) for DM and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Alternatively, an unadjusted and/or adjusted OR was directly abstracted from each individual study. Eleven eligible studies enrolling a total of 47 827 participants were included. A primary pooled analysis of all the 11 studies demonstrated that TAD/TAA was associated with significantly lower DM prevalence than controls (OR, 0.43; 95% CI, 0.31-0.59; P < .00001). Separate pooled analyses of 6 TAD case studies and 4 TAA case studies demonstrated TAD (OR, 0.34; 95% CI, 0.19-0.61; P = .0003) and TAA (OR, 0.65; 95% CI, 0.45-0.94; P = .02) were associated with significantly lower DM prevalence than controls. In conclusion, DM may be negatively associated with the presence of TAD/TAA.

Abstract
There is accumulating evidence that risk profiles differ between coronary artery disease and abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). However, diabetes mellitus (DM) appears to be negatively associated with AAA formation. The underlying mechanisms for this negative relationship are far from defined, but may include: increased arterial wall matrix formation via advanced glycation end products; suppression of plasmin and reduction of levels and activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-2 and 9; diminished aortic wall macrophage infiltration, elastolysis and neovascularization. In addition, the effect of pharmacological agents used for the treatment of patients with DM on AAA formation has been studied with rather controversial results. Statins, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, fenofibrate, antibiotics and some hypoglycemic agents are beginning to be appreciated for a potential modest protection from AAAs, but further studies are needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this review is to delineate the association between abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) and diabetes mellitus. Mechanisms for the underlying association are then discussed. METHODS A systematic review of the English-language literature using PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane databases was undertaken up to September 2009. Studies reporting appropriate prevalence data were identified and a meta-analysis performed. RESULTS Eleven studies were identified. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus in studied patients with AAA ranged from 6% to 14%. The prevalence of diabetes in control patients without AAA ranged from 17% to 36%. Pooled analysis suggested a reduced rate of diabetes amongst people with AAA compared to those without (OR 0.65, 0.60-0.70, p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS Studies so far suggest a protective role for diabetes on the development of AAA. Further research is required to demarcate the underlying mechanisms for this possible association.

Abstract
Over the past two decades, extensive research has focused on arterial remodelling in both physiological and pathological ageing. The concept now describes the growth as well as the rearrangement of cellular components and extracellular matrix, resulting in either reduction or increase in vessel lumen. In diabetes, remodelling extends to capillaries, microvascular beds, and arteries of different calibre. This process is paralleled by accelerated atherosclerosis and accounts for an increased incidence of ischaemic complications. The incapacity of pre-existing and de novo formed collaterals to bypass atherosclerotic occlusions, combined with a decline in tissue capillary density, is responsible for the delayed recovery from ischaemia and ultimately leads to organ failure. The mechanisms of vascular remodelling are incompletely understood, but metabolic and mechanical factors seem to play an important role. Hyperglycaemia represents the main factor responsible for the fast progression of atherosclerosis as well as microangiopathy. However, intensive blood glucose control alone is insufficient to reduce the risk of macrovascular complications. Pharmacological control of oxidative stress and stimulation of nitric oxide release have proved to exert beneficial effects on vascular remodelling in experimental diabetic models. New approaches of regenerative medicine using vascular progenitor cells for the treatment of ischaemic disease have been shown to be safe and are now being tested for efficacy in pre-clinical and clinical trials.
