Abstract
BACKGROUND Numerous studies have reported the association between tea intake and lung diseases. However, the probable relationship between tea consumption on lung diseases still remain controversial and it is unclear whether these findings are due to reverse causality or confounding factor. METHODS In order to systematically investigate the causal connection between tea intake on respiratory system disorders, we employed a two-sample Mendelian randomized (MR) study. Genetic instruments for tea intake were identified from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) involving 447,385 individuals. Data on lung diseases were collected from a variety of publicly available genome-wide association studies. The main method used for MR analysis is the inverse variance weighting (IVW) method. To ensure the accuracy of the findings, further sensitivity analysis was conducted. RESULTS The IVW method in our MR analysis revealed no evidence to support a causal relationship between tea intake and lung diseases (IPF: OR = 0.997, 95% CI = 0.994-1.000, p = 0.065; Lung cancer: OR = 1.003, 95% CI = 0.998-1.008, P = 0.261; COPD: OR = 1.001, 95% CI = 0.993-1.006, p = 0.552; acute bronchitis: OR = 0.919, 95% CI = 0.536-1.576, p = 0.759; tuberculosis: OR = 1.002, 95% CI = 0.998-1.008, p = 0.301; pneumonia: OR = 0.789, 95% CI = 0.583-1.068, p = 0.125). The reliability of the results was further demonstrated by four additional MR analysis techniques and additional sensitivity testing. CONCLUSION We found no evidence of a link between tea intake on lung diseases in our MR results based on genetic information.

Abstract
Purpose: Teas are an essential part of traditional phytotherapy. The aim of this systematic review is to assess the clinical evidence using green tea catechins in cancer care. Methods: A systematic search was conducted searching five electronic databases concerning the effectiveness and risks of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) on cancer patients. Results: Seven studies with 371 patients were included. Patients were mainly suffering from breast and prostate cancer. Dosing ranged from 28 mg to 1600 mg EGCG, intervention time from 7 days to 6 months with different applications (topical 2 studies; oral 5 studies). The studies showed heterogeneous methodological quality and results leading not to conduct a meta-analysis. There was a small decrease in prostate-specific-antigen levels in one study (N=60; T0:(mean±SD) 9.6±5.2 ng/ml, T1: 8.4±4.3 ng/ml vs. T0: 9.9±8.5 ng/ml, T1: 10.0±9.0 ng/ml; p=0.04), whereas in a second study only a trend was seen. Topical green tea was as effective as metronidazole powder in reducing the odor of fungating malignant wounds (1 study; N=30) with a consequent increase in quality of life (QoL) (p<0.001), improvement of appetite (p<0.001), malodorous control (p<0.001), social activities (p<0.001). Radiotherapy-induced diarrhea was lower in the green tea intervention group compared to placebo (1 study; N=42; week 4+5: without diarrhea p=0.002). Conclusions: The studies suggest that EGCG is as effective as a local antibiotic in malodorous control and improvement of QoL of fungating malignant wounds. Green tea could be a possible complementary method for treating acute radiation-induced diarrhea. Due to limitations, further studies with higher methodological quality and larger sample sizes are needed.

Abstract
Cancer is exerting an immense strain on the population and health systems all over the world. Green tea because of its higher simple catechin content (up to 30% on dry weight basis) is greatly popular as an anti-cancer agent which is found to reduce the risks of cancer as well as a range of other diseases. In addition, several in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that green tea possesses copious health benefits like anti-diabetic, anti-obese, anti-inflammatory, neuro-protective, cardio-protective, etc. This review highlights the anti-carcinogenic effects of green tea catechins integrating the recent information to gain a clear concept. Special emphasis was given to the effectiveness of green tea polyphenols (GTP) in the prevention of cancer. Overall, green tea has been found to be effective to reduce the risks of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, liver cancer, colorectal cancer, skin cancer, prostate cancer, oral cancer, etc. However, sufficient information was not found to support that green tea consumption reduces the risk of lung cancer, esophageal cancer, or stomach cancer. The exciting data integrated into this article will increase interest in future researchers to garner more fruitful information on the relevant topics.

Abstract
Esophageal cancer is one of the most fetal malignancies in the world. Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and esophageal adenocarcinoma (AC) are two main types of esophageal cancer and each with distinct epidemiological, etiological and histopathological characteristics. The continued global prevalence of tobacco use and alcohol consumption, coupled with limited intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, ensures that esophageal cancer will remain one of the major health threats. In addition to promoting quitting smoking and alcohol abuse, one of the strategies of cancer prevention is to identify foods, food components, or dietary patterns that can prevent or delay the onset of esophageal cancer. A food-based approach has the advantage of a complex of mixtures of bioactive components simultaneously targeting multiple processes in carcinogenesis. We have employed a preclinical rodent model of esophageal SCC to assess the effects of black raspberries (BRB) and strawberries. Our investigations demonstrate that BRB and strawberries are potent inhibitors of esophageal cancer. To prepare for this review, a literature search was performed to screen BRB and strawberries against esophageal cancer using electronic databases from PubMed, Science Direct and Google Scholar. Search was conducted covering the period from January 2000 to June 2022. Our present review has provided a systematic review about chemopreventive effects of BRB and strawberries in esophageal cancer by collecting and compiling diverse research findings from the above sources. In this review, we discussed the anti-tumor potentials of BRB and strawberries in esophageal SCC and esophageal AC separately. For each cancer type, we discuss animal models and research findings from both animal bioassays and human clinical studies. We also discuss the potential mechanisms of action of berries and their key bioactive components.

Abstract
PURPOSE Our objectives were to analyze the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in cancer patients and to describe the incidence and characteristics of interactions between CAM and antineoplastic agents. METHODS We performed an observational study in cancer outpatients at a university hospital. Variables were collected through a 22-item questionnaire. Potential interactions between CAM and antineoplastic agents were analyzed using the Lexicomp®, the About Herbs®, and the summary of product characteristics. Mechanism of action, reliability, and the potential clinical effect of interactions were analyzed. RESULTS The study population comprised 937 patients, of whom 65% used CAM (70.6% herbal products, 25.8% dietary supplements, and 3.6% homeopathy). Female sex, younger age, and breast cancer were associated with more frequent use of CAM. The primary source of information about CAM was friends and family (43.5%). A total of 335 (57.1%) patients did not tell their doctor that they took CAM. The five most common CAM were chamomile, green tea, pennyroyal mint, linden, and rooibos. At least one interaction between CAM and antineoplastic agents was reported by 65.0% of CAM users (33.9% of all patients). Depending on the mechanism of action, 80% of CAM diminished the metabolism of the antineoplastic agents. CONCLUSION Our results reveal a high incidence of interactions between CAM and antineoplastic agents. The most frequent CAM were herbal products. Family and friends were the primary sources of information that led patients to start taking CAM, and more than half of the patients did not tell their doctor that they were taking CAM.

Abstract
Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) has been demonstrated to exhibit anticancer effects; however, the mechanisms behind these are not yet clear. The objective of the present study was to assess the effect of EGCG on smoking-induced, precancerous, bronchial epithelial cell lesions and determine a potential protective mechanism. Human bronchial epithelial (HBE) cells were treated with cigarette smoke extract (CSE). Benzopyrene-DNA adducts were detected by immunofluorescence cytochemistry. Changes to microRNA (miRNA) expression levels were detected via microarray. The effects of EGCG on smoke-induced benzopyrene-DNA adduct formation and the subsequent change in miRNA expression were analyzed. Subsequently, the protective effect of EGCG on smoke inhalation-induced precancerous lesions was investigated. The expression levels of miRNA target genes were also analyzed. After CSE treatment, benzopyrene-DNA adducts appeared in HBE cells, along with a resultant change in miRNA expression. EGCG inhibited the effects of CSE exposure; benzopyrene-DNA adduct formation was reduced and miRNA expression changes were suppressed. In vivo, EGCG significantly reduced benzopyrene-DNA adduct formation and the subsequent development of precancerous lesions in rat lungs induced by cigarette smoke inhalation. Moreover, EGCG downregulated CYP1A1 overexpression, a target gene of multiple smoking-induced miRNAs, in rat lungs. EGCG may reduce the risk of lung cancer by downregulating the expression of the key gene CYP1A1, preventing the formation of smoking-induced benzopyrene-DNA adducts and alleviating smoking-induced bronchial epithelial dysplasia and heterogeneity.

Abstract
Although various methods, such as surgery and chemotherapy, are applied to the treatment of OSCC, there are problems, such as functional and aesthetic limitations of the mouth and face, drug side effects, and lymph node metastasis. Many researchers are making efforts to develop new therapeutic agents from plant-derived substances to overcome the side effects that occur in oral cancer treatment. Polydatin is known as a natural precursor of resveratrol, and research on its efficacy is being actively conducted recently. Therefore, we investigated whether polydatin can induce apoptosis and whether it affects cell migration and invasion through the regulation of EMT-related factors in OSCC. Polydatin decreased the survival and proliferation rates of CAL27 and Ca9-22 cells, and induced the release of cytochrome c, a factor related to apoptosis, and fragmentation of procaspase-3 and PARP. Another form of cell death, autophagy, was observed in polydatin-treated cells. In addition, polydatin inhibits cell migration and invasion, and it has been shown to occur through increased expression of E-cadherin, an EMT related factor, and decreased expression of N-cadherin and Slug and Snail proteins and genes. These findings suggest that polydatin is a potential oral cancer treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prostate cancer is a major malignancy, affecting men, worldwide. The protective effect of green tea consumption on prostate cancer has been reported in several studies; however, the findings are equivocal. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of green tea on PSA level, by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. METHODS We searched online databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, up to 11 Aug 2020, to obtain relevant publications. The publication search was not limited by language or date. RESULTS A total of 2488 records were identified in the systematic search; from these, seven were included in the meta-analysis. The overall analysis showed no significant changes in PSA levels in subjects treated with green tea, (WMD: ‒0.60 ng/mL; 95 % CI: ‒1.32, 0.12 ng/mL; P = 0.104, I2 = 93.80 %, P heterogeneity<0.001). Subgroup analysis based on geographical location showed that green tea significantly reduced PSA level in the USA population (WMD: ‒1.02 pg/mL, 95 % CI: ‒1.30, ‒0.73, P < 0.001) compared to non-USA populations (WMD: ‒0.22 pg/mL, 95 % CI: ‒0.95, 0.50, P = 0.539) (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION The results of this review show that green tea has no significant effect on PSA level. However, due to the heterogeneity among studies more consistent clinical trials, with larger sample sizes are required.

Abstract
The growing incidence of global lung cancer cases against successful treatment modalities has increased the demand for the development of innovative strategies to complement conventional chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. The substitution of chemotherapeutics by naturally occurring phenolic compounds has been touted as a promising research endeavor, as they sideline the side effects of current chemotherapy drugs. However, the therapeutic efficacy of these compounds is conventionally lower than that of chemotherapeutic agents due to their lower solubility and consequently poor intracellular uptake. Therefore, we report herein a hydrophobically modified chitosan nanoparticle (pCNP) system for the encapsulation of protocatechuic acid (PCA), a naturally occurring but poorly soluble phenolic compound, for increased efficacy and improved intracellular uptake in A549 lung cancer cells. The pCNP system was modified by the inclusion of a palmitoyl group and physico-chemically characterized to assess its particle size, Polydispersity Index (PDI) value, amine group quantification, functional group profiling, and morphological properties. The inclusion of hydrophobic palmitoyl in pCNP-PCA was found to increase the encapsulation of PCA by 54.5% compared to unmodified CNP-PCA samples whilst it only conferred a 23.4% larger particle size. The single-spherical like particles with uniformed dispersity pCNP-PCA exhibited IR bands, suggesting the successful incorporation of PCA within its core, and a hydrophobic layer was elucidated via electron micrographs. The cytotoxic efficacy was then assessed by using an MTT cytotoxicity assay towards A549 human lung cancer cell line and was compared with traditional chitosan nanoparticle system. Fascinatingly, a controlled release delivery and enhanced therapeutic efficacy were observed in pCNP-PCA compared to CNP, which is ascribed to lower IC50 values in the 72-h treatment in the pCNP system. Using the hydrophobic system, efficacy of PCA was significantly increased in 24-, 48-, and 72-h treatments compared to a single administration of the compound, and via the unmodified CNP system. Findings arising from this study exhibit the potential of using such modified nanoparticulate systems in increasing the efficacy of natural phenolic compounds by augmenting their delivery potential for better anti-cancer responses.

Abstract
Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) was the 7th most common malignancy worldwide in 2018 and despite therapeutic advances, the overall survival rate for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC; ∼50%) has remained unchanged for decades. The most common types are OSCC and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC, survival rate ∼85%). Tobacco smoking is a major risk factor of HNSCC. In the developed world, the incidence of OSCC is declining as a result of tobacco cessation programs. However, OPSCC, which is also linked to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, is on the rise and now ranks as the most common HPV-related cancer. The current state of knowledge indicates that HPV-associated disease differs substantially from other types of HNSCC and distinct biological differences between HPV-positive and HPV-negative HNSCC have been identified. Although risk factors have been extensively discussed in the literature, there are multiple clinically relevant questions that remain unanswered and even unexplored. Moreover, existing approaches (e.g., tobacco cessation, vaccination, and chemoprevention) to manage and control this disease remain a challenge. Thus, in this review, we discuss potential future basic research that can assist in a better understanding of disease pathogenesis which may lead to novel and more effective preventive strategies for OSCC and OPSCC.

Abstract
Cancer is becoming more prevalent in elderly patient. Due to polypharmacy, older adults with cancer are predisposed to drug-drug interactions. There is also an increasing interest in the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Thirty to seventy percent of patients with cancer have used CAM. Through pharmaceutical counseling sessions, we can provide advices on herb-drug interactions (HDI). All the patients seen in pharmaceutical counseling sessions were prospectively included. Information was collected during these sessions: prescribed medication (oral anticancer agents (OAA) and other drugs), CAM (phytotherapy especially), and use of over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. If pharmacist considered an interaction or an intervention clinically relevant, the oncologist was notified. Then, a literature review was realized to identify the potential HDI (no interactions, precautions for use, contraindication). Among 201 pharmacist counseling sessions, it resulted in 104 interventions related to 46 HDI, 28 drug-drug interactions and 30 others (wrong dosage, omission…). To determine HDI, we review 73 medicinal plants which are used by our patients with cancer and 31 OAA. A total of 1829 recommendations were formulated about 59 (75%) medical plants and their interaction with an OAA. Herb-drug interactions should not be ignored by healthcare providers in their management of cancer patients in daily practice.

Abstract
Consumption of green tea (GT) extracts or purified catechins has shown the ability to prevent oral and other cancers and inhibit cancer progression in rodent models, but the evidence for this in humans is mixed. Working with humans, we sought to understand the source of variable responses to GT by examining its effects on oral epithelium. Lingual epithelial RNA and lingual and gingival microbiota were measured before and after 4 weeks of exposure in tobacco smokers, whom are at high risk of oral cancer. GT consumption had on average inconsistent effects on miRNA expression in the oral epithelium. Only analysis that examined paired miRNAs, showing changed and coordinated expression with GT exposure, provided evidence for a GT effect on miRNAs, identifying miRNAs co-expressed with two hubs, miR-181a-5p and 301a-3p. An examination of the microbiome on cancer prone lingual mucosa, in contrast, showed clear shifts in the relative abundance of Streptococcus and Staphylococcus, and other genera after GT exposure. These data support the idea that tea consumption can consistently change oral bacteria in humans, which may affect carcinogenesis, but argue that GT effects on oral epithelial miRNA expression in humans vary between individuals.

Abstract
The link between chronic inflammation and cancer involves cytokines and mediators of inflammatory pathways. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), a key enzyme in fatty acid metabolism, is upregulated during both inflammation and cancer. COX-2 is induced by pro-inflammatory cytokines at the site of inflammation and enhanced COX-2-induced synthesis of prostaglandins stimulates cancer cell proliferation, promotes angiogenesis, inhibits apoptosis, and increases metastatic potential. As a result, COX-2 inhibitors are a subject of intense research interest toward potential clinical applications. Epidemiological studies highlight the potential benefits of diets rich in phytonutrients for cancer prevention. Plants contain numerous phytonutrient secondary metabolites shown to modulate COX-2. Studies have shown that these metabolites, some of which are used in traditional medicine, can reduce inflammation and carcinogenesis. This review describes the molecular mechanisms by which phytonutrients modulate inflammation, including studies of carotenoids, phenolic compounds, and fatty acids targeting various inflammation-related molecules and pathways associated with cancer. Examples of pathways include those of COX-2, mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase, mitogen-activated protein kinase, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and transcription factors like nuclear factor kappa B. Such phytonutrient modulation of COX-2 and inflammation continue to be explored for applications in the prevention and treatment of cancer.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: There is a lack of information on
therapies recommended by naturopathic doctors (NDs) for lung and
gastroesophageal cancer care. Study objectives were to: (1) identify the most
common interventions considered for use by NDs; (2) identify interventions NDs
recommend to support key therapeutic goals; and (3) identify potential
contraindications between integrative and conventional therapies.
Methods: Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians
(OncANP) members (n = 351) were invited to complete an electronic survey.
Respondents provided information on interventions considered for thoracic cancer
pre- and postoperatively across 4 therapeutic domains (supplemental natural
health products, physical, mental/emotional, and nutritional), therapeutic
goals, and contraindications. This survey was part of the development of the
Thoracic Perioperative Integrative Surgical Evaluation trial.
Results: Forty-four NDs completed the survey (12.5% response
rate), all of whom were trained at accredited colleges in North America and the
majority of whom were Fellows of the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology
(FABNO) (56.8%). NDs identified significantly more interventions in the
postoperative compared to preoperative setting. The most frequently identified
interventions included modified citrus pectin, arnica, omega-3 fatty acids,
vitamin D, probiotics, exercise, acupuncture, meditation, stress reduction, low
glycemic index diet, and Mediterranean diet. Potential contraindications with
conventional treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy) differed across
natural health products. Conclusions: These findings highlight
naturopathic interventions with a high level of use in thoracic cancer care,
describe and characterize therapeutic goals and the interventions used to
achieve these goals, and provide insight on how practice changes relative to
conventional cancer treatment phase.
