Abstract
Remimazolam is a new benzodiazepine. Currently, it remains unclear how repeated exposure to remimazolam affects the cognitive function of the developing brain. In the present study, the equivalent doses of the two sedatives were derived from S-shaped dose-response curves, and the ED95 of remimazolam was 45 mg/kg (95% CI 37.579-79.280), and for midazolam, it was 77 mg/kg (95% CI 63.751-127.21) using probability analysis. Then, we evaluated the effects of remimazolam and midazolam on cognitive function in juvenile mice (C57BL/6) through Y-maze and MWM. TUNEL staining was used to observe the apoptosis of neurons in hippocampus, western blotting was used to detect the expression changes of related proteins, and the changes of LTP were observed by recording the activity of neurons through electrical stimulation. We found that there was no significant difference in the behavior of mice in MWM. However, the short-term memory of developing mice was impaired in Y-maze after repeated exposure to remimazolam and midazolam. Furthermore, our data demonstrated that the short-term memory damage caused by remimazolam is lighter than midazolam. Concurrently, the extent of caspase-3 upregulation, the number of neuronal apoptosis in CA1 and CA3 regions, a downward trend of PSD95 and BDNF in the hippocampus, and the inhibition of LTP were highly consistent with the behavior of short-term memory impairment. These results indicate that the degree of memory impairment caused by remimazolam is milder than that caused by midazolam, making it a potential replacement for midazolam in repeated medication and long-term sedation in children.

Abstract
Incidence of autoimmune disorders, birth defects, and neurological diseases rose over the past 50 years due to increasing variety and quantity of pollutants. To date, there appear few methods capable to evaluate and predict mixture effects by endocrine disruptors (EDs). For the first time, we have developed calculus to determine mixture effects by all kinds of EDs. Our method uses the golden ratio ϕ and draws from bifurcation and chaos theory. Using also the concept of molecular mimicry, we developed the equation: e f f e c t = 100 % 1 + e 5 · ∑ K i C i - n i ϕ 3 . We successfully tested the equation using a range of cohort studies and biomarkers, and for different pollutants like heavy metals, thyroid hormone mimickants, chromate/chlorate, etc. The equation is simple enough to use with only minor prior knowledge and understanding of basic algebra. The method is universal and calculation is data 'light', requiring only pollutant concentrations [C], potencies K and an integer n for endocrinal involvement. This study offers a comprehensive framework to assess the health effects of pollutant exposure across diverse populations, envisioning far-reaching impact, and presenting practical examples and insights.

Abstract
Ayapana triplinervis (M.Vahl) R.M.King & H.Rob. (Asteraceae), popularly known as japana, is a tropical, aromatic subshrub widely used as tea to combat some diseases. The essential oil was obtained from the leaves by hydrodistillation (3 h), and the chemical composition was analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. For in vivo assays, Mus musculus/Swiss mice were used to evaluate oral acute toxicological (at dose of 2000 mg/kg); peripheral and central analgesic for abdominal contortion (doses of 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50 and 100 mg/kg), hot plate test (12.5, 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg) and formalin (25, 50 and 100 mg/kg); open field test (100 mg/kg); and anti-inflammatory by ear swelling induced by xylene (6.25,12.5, 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg). The yield of A. triplinervis essential oil (AtEO) was 4.6%, and the oxygenated monoterpene 2,5-dimethoxy-p-cymene was the major compound in this study (63.6%). AtEO at a dose of 2,000 mg/kg orally did not change the behavior patterns or mortality of the animals; liver and kidney biochemical levels were similar to the control group, indicating no liver and kidney toxicity. Moreover, AtEO, at doses of 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg, reduced abdominal contortions by 21%, 54%, 91%, 58%, and 55%, respectively. In the hot plate test, AtEO showed a significant increase in latency time in the 60-min interval at doses of 25 mg/kg (11.3 ± 3.3 s) and 100 mg/kg (11.9 ± 0.9 s). In the first phase of the formalin test, AtEO decreased paw licking time at doses of 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg, with inhibition of 22%, 38%, and 83%; in the second phase, the same doses, decreased licking time with inhibition of 24%, 34%, and 76%. AtEO did not present a significant change in the spontaneous locomotor activity of the animals. Doses of 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg significantly reduced ear edema induced by topical application of xylene with percentages of 40%, 39%, 54%, 45%, and 45%, respectively. So, AtEO demonstrated low acute oral toxicity and exhibited significant antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory actions, consistent with the use of A. triplinervis in traditional medicine.

Abstract
This review aims to analyze the emerging number of studies on biological media that describe the unexpected effects of different natural bioactive antioxidants. Hormetic effects, with a biphasic response depending on the dose, or activities that are apparently non-dose-dependent, have been described for compounds such as resveratrol, curcumin, ferulic acid or linoleic acid, among others. The analysis of the reported studies confirms the incidence of these types of effects, which should be taken into account by researchers, discarding initial interpretations of imprecise methodologies or measurements. The incidence of these types of effects should enhance research into the different mechanisms of action, particularly those studied in the field of basic research, that will help us understand the causes of these unusual behaviors, depending on the dose, such as the inactivation of the signaling pathways of the immune defense system. Antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activities in biological media should be addressed in ways that go beyond a mere statistical approach. In this work, some of the research pathways that may explain the understanding of these activities are revised, paying special attention to the ability of the selected bioactive compounds (curcumin, resveratrol, ferulic acid and linoleic acid) to form metal complexes and the activity of these complexes in biological media.

Abstract
An examination revealed the dominance of the published literature of environmental science by p values. Meanwhile, the use of effect size has been neglected in publications reporting primary data, yet the size of effect is often more informative than p values inference in assessing the effects of pollution on living organisms, comparing susceptibility/resistance among organisms, and ranking pollutants according to their potency, among others. Statistical significance does not necessarily mean biological, practical, or scientific significance, and its use based on (often misinterpreted) p values reflects the average response or effect at average conditions based on an assumed linear model fit to the entire sample. However, pollution impacts and organismal responses are rarely characterized by linear and symmetric features, and dichotomous 'statistical significance' based on p values is inadequate to fully describe data and findings. Considering 'the fallacy of the average', variance, and differential response of different population percentiles in new studies would provide otherwise wasted biologically, practically, or scientifically significant information. Since p values often inform as to whether some findings warrant further examination, journals should consider mandating the reporting of effect sizes and confidence intervals, together with p values (should they be used), to provide more integrated information regarding pollution impacts. Moreover, replacing 'statistical significance' with language of evidence, especially in key components of publications, such as abstracts and conclusions, could help preventing potential misleading of the public and decision and policy makers.

Abstract
The leading cause of cancer mortality remains lung cancer (LC), of which non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the predominant type. Chemotherapy achieves only low response rates while inflicting serious untoward toxicity. Herein, we studied the binding and internalization of S15-aptamer (S15-APT)-decorated polyethylene glycol-polycaprolactone (PEG-PCL) nanoparticles (NPs) by various human NSCLC cell lines. All the NSCLC cell lines were targeted by S15-APT-decorated NPs. Confocal microscopy revealed variable levels of NP binding and uptake amongst these NSCLC cell lines, decreasing in the following order: Adenocarcinoma (AC) A549 cells > H2228 (AC) > H1299 (large cell carcinoma) > H522 (AC) > H1975 (AC). Flow cytometry analysis showed a consistent variation between these NSCLC cell lines in the internalization of S15-APT-decorated quantum dots. We obtained a temperature-dependent NP uptake, characteristic of active internalization. Furthermore, cytotoxicity assays with APT-NPs entrapping paclitaxel, revealed that A549 cells had the lowest IC50 value of 0.03 µM PTX (determined previously), whereas H2228, H1299, H522 and H1975 exhibited higher IC50 values of 0.38 µM, 0.92 µM, 2.31 µM and 2.59 µM, respectively (determined herein). Cytotoxicity was correlated with the binding and internalization of APT-NPs in the various NSCLC cells, suggesting variable expression of the putative S15 target receptor. These findings support the development of APT-targeted NPs in precision nanomedicine for individual NSCLC patient treatment.

Abstract
In recent years, there has been a growing number of studies on the impact of microplastics (MPs) on biota. However, its effects on birds' health are poorly understood. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the possible effects of ingestion of naturally-aged MPs by Coturnix Coturnix japonica (11 and 22 MP particles/day/bird, once a day, for 9 days), from different toxicity biomarkers. At the end of the experiment, it was found that the ingested MPs in birds showed a significant reduction in body biomass. Also, an increase in malondialdehyde production in the liver, brain, intestine, and gizzard of the birds, as well as a suppressive effect on hepatic nitric oxide production and superoxide dismutase activity in the liver and intestine were observed. Cerebral catalase activity was reduced in birds exposed to MPs and the cholinesterasic effect (marked by increased acetylcholinesterase activity) was observed in the muscle and brain of these animals. Despite these differences, through the main component analysis, hierarchical clustering analysis, and integrated biomarker response assessment, we observed similar toxicological effects in birds exposed to different amounts of MPs. In addition, the size of MPs was reduced, and their shape was altered as they transited through the gastrointestinal system, which probably explains their accumulation in the liver of birds. An expressive number of MPs are released through the feces of the birds throughout the experiment. As far as we know, this is the first report that associates MPs ingestion by small-sized terrestrial birds with biochemical alterations viz., predictive of oxidative stress, redox imbalance, and cholinesterasic effect, in addition to shedding light on the potential role of these birds as vectors for dispersal of MPs in natural environments.
