Abstract
INTRODUCTION Alzheimer's disease (AD) disproportionately affects minoritized populations who remain underrepresented in AD trials. METHODS We partnered with local nursing community-based organizations to implement a culturally tailored educational intervention and recruit Hispanic/Latino American, Filipino American, and Korean American adults aged 55 to 80 for the AHEAD study, a preclinical AD trial, at the University of California, Irvine. RESULTS We engaged 654 individuals across 21 events, leading to 71 prescreenings: 21.1% Filipino, 11.2% Hispanic/Latino, and 67.6% Korean adults. Ineligibility due to age and language barriers was common among Hispanic/Latino and Korean adults, respectively. Filipino adults often withdrew interest or were lost to follow-up. Ultimately, 25 participants enrolled: eight Filipino, two Hispanic/Latino, and 15 Korean adults. Tailored, culturally relevant content significantly contributed to the engagement success. DISCUSSION This study demonstrates the value and impact of novel partnerships with health-related provider organizations that provide trusted care and access to underrepresented communities. HIGHLIGHTS Six hundred and fifty four underrepresented individuals were reached, and 25 enrolled in the AHEAD 3-45 trial. Twenty-one community events were held via partnerships with nursing and community organizations. The study engaged 21% Filipino, 11% Hispanic/Latino, 68% Korean adults. Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) principles enhanced the recruitment process. Transparent communication and joint planning were key.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study explored the use and effects of a smoking cessation referral in: 1) practice nurses (PNs), and 2) smokers. The use of evidence-based smoking cessation interventions (EBSCIs) can double the likelihood of a successful smoking cessation attempt. A referral aid was developed to aid Dutch PNs in primary care in deciding which smokers are the most suitable for EBSCI. METHODS Two different studies were conducted: 1) a randomized controlled trial with a process evaluation (n=82) and effect evaluation (n=285) among smoking patients recruited by PNs (n=73), and 2) a process evaluation among a subgroup of PNs (n=40) from January 2019 to September 2020. RESULTS Overall, the response in both groups was low. PNs found the referral aid materials clear and understandable. Smokers had similar but (slightly) less-positive opinions. The smokers in both groups did not differ in the amount of discussion and use of EBSCIs, nor on smoking abstinence. CONCLUSIONS Further research should assess how to better involve PNs and smokers when recruiting for an RCT and how to foster effective counselling. Additional research should also look deeper into barriers to referral of both PNs and smokers, and how to stimulate referral to EBSCIs best and help smokers to make a decision; for example by implementing a simplified strategy both within the primary care setting and outside, by involving other healthcare professionals or options outside healthcare such as the workplace and social domain. Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the effectiveness of adding community-based recruitment to clinic-based recruitment to engage participants in a glaucoma detection program. DESIGN Prospective cohort study. SUBJECTS Anyone ≥ 18 years of age who does not meet exclusion criteria. METHODS The Michigan Screening and Intervention for Glaucoma and Eye Health through Telemedicine (MI-SIGHT) program tests a novel way of improving glaucoma detection in communities with populations at high risk for disease, including people who identify as Black and Hispanic and those living with low socioeconomic status. The MI-SIGHT program is conducted in a free clinic (Ypsilanti, MI) and in a federally qualified health center (FQHC) (Flint, MI). Community engagement methods were used to identify outreach strategies to enhance recruitment. Participants were asked "How did you hear about the MI-SIGHT program?" and responses were summarized overall and by clinic and compared between clinic-based and community-based recruitment strategies. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Proportion recruited by location, within or outside of the clinic. RESULTS In total, 647 participants were recruited in the first 11 months of the study, 356 (55.0%) at the free clinic over 11 months and 291 (45.0%) at the FQHC over 6 months. Participants were on average 54.4 years old (standard deviation = 14.2); 60.9% identified as female, 45.6% identified as Black, 37.8% identified as White, 9.6% identified as Hispanic, and 10.9% had less than high school education. Participants reported hearing about the MI-SIGHT program from a clinic phone call (n = 168, 26.1%), a friend (n = 112, 17.4%), nonmedical clinic staff (n = 100, 15.5%), a clinic doctor (n = 77, 11.9%), an in-clinic brochure or flyer (n = 51, 7.9%), a community flyer (n = 44, 6.8%), the clinic website or social media (n = 28, 4.3%), or an "other" source (n = 65, 10.1%). Recruiting from the community outside the medical clinics increased participation by 265% at the free clinic and 46% at the FQHC. CONCLUSIONS The Community Advisory Board recommendation to use community-based recruitment strategies in addition to clinic-based strategies for recruitment resulted in increased program participation. Abstract
BACKGROUND Although individually tailored eHealth programmes have shown to be effective in changing patient and citizen health behaviours, they have so far not been applied to lifestyle counselling guideline adherence in primary health care professionals beyond our STAR project. The programme aimed to support general practice nurses adhering to national smoking cessation counselling guidelines and showed encouraging positive impacts on both nurse and patient level. OBJECTIVE To identify lessons learned from our successful application of a tailored eHealth programme in primary health care. METHODS Triangulation of information from different sources collected throughout the project run time (e.g., project meetings, discussions with experts in the fields of computer tailoring, smoking cessation and professional education and interactions with general practice nurses). RESULTS We identify four lessons learned which developers and testers of tailored eHealth programmes in primary health care should consider, relating to 1) Choosing outcome measures, 2) Measuring outcomes, 3) Practical feedback application & Programme accessibility, and 4) Programme interaction. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS We share this information in the hope that we will see more applications of this promising intervention strategy - that can build on our work - in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This analysis addresses the characteristics of two emergency department (ED) patient populations defined by three model diseases (hip fractures, respiratory, and cardiac symptoms) making use of survey (primary) and routine (secondary) data from hospital information systems (HIS). Our aims were to identify potential systematic inconsistencies between both data samples and implications of their use for future ED-based health services research. METHODS The research network EMANET prospectively collected primary data (n=1442) from 2017-2019 and routine data from 2016 (n=9329) of eight EDs in a major German city. Patient populations were characterized using socio-structural (age, gender) and health- and care-related variables (triage, transport to ED, case and discharge type, multi-morbidity). Statistical comparisons between descriptive results of primary and secondary data samples for each variable were conducted using binomial test, chi-square goodness-of-fit test, or one-sample t-test according to scale level. RESULTS Differences in distributions of patient characteristics were found in nearly all variables in all three disease populations, especially with regard to transport to ED, discharge type and prevalence of multi-morbidity. Recruitment conditions (e.g., patient non-response), project-specific inclusion criteria (e.g., age and case type restrictions) as well as documentation routines and practices of data production (e.g., coding of diagnoses) affected the composition of primary patient samples. Time restrictions of recruitment procedures did not generate meaningful differences regarding the distribution of characteristics in primary and secondary data samples. CONCLUSIONS Primary and secondary data types maintain their advantages and shortcomings in the context of emergency medicine health services research. However, differences in the distribution of selected variables are rather small. The identification and classification of these effects for data interpretation as well as the establishment of monitoring systems in the data collection process are pivotal. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The Solution Focused Brief Therapy in Post-Stroke Aphasia feasibility trial had four primary aims: to assess (1) acceptability of the intervention to people with aphasia, including severe aphasia, (2) feasibility of recruitment and retention, (3) acceptability of research procedures and outcome measures, and (4) feasibility of delivering the intervention by speech and language therapists. DESIGN Two-group randomised controlled feasibility trial with wait-list design, blinded outcome assessors and nested qualitative research. SETTING Participants identified via two community NHS Speech and Language Therapy London services and through community routes (eg, voluntary-sector stroke groups). PARTICIPANTS People with aphasia at least 6 months post stroke. INTERVENTION Solution-focused brief therapy, a psychological intervention, adapted to be linguistically accessible. Participants offered up to six sessions over 3 months, either immediately postrandomisation or after a delay of 6 months. OUTCOME MEASURES Primary endpoints related to feasibility and acceptability. Clinical outcomes were collected at baseline, 3 and 6 months postrandomisation, and at 9 months (wait-list group only). The candidate primary outcome measure was the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale. Participants and therapists also took part in in-depth interviews. RESULTS Thirty-two participants were recruited, including 43.8% with severe aphasia. Acceptability endpoints: therapy was perceived as valuable and acceptable by both participants (n=30 interviews) and therapists (n=3 interviews); 93.8% of participants had ≥2 therapy sessions (90.6% had 6/6 sessions). Feasibility endpoints: recruitment target was reached within the prespecified 13-month recruitment window; 82.1% of eligible participants consented; 96.9% were followed up at 6 months; missing data <0.01%. All five prespecified feasibility progression criteria were met. CONCLUSION The high retention and adherence rates, alongside the qualitative data, suggest the study design was feasible and therapy approach acceptable even to people with severe aphasia. These results indicate a definitive randomised controlled trial of the intervention would be feasible. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER NCT03245060.
