Understanding mental health outcomes related to compassion fatigue in parents of children diagnosed with intellectual disability

Do nurses' personality traits affect the level of compassion fatigue?

AIMS

To determine whether nurses' personality traits impact their levels of compassion fatigue.

BACKGROUNDS

Compassion fatigue has become one of nursing literature's most discussed and investigated topics. Although some nurses working in the same environment and under similar conditions are more resistant to compassion fatigue, some are at risk of it.

METHODS

This descriptive study was conducted with 451 nurses selected using a simple random sampling method in Turkey. Data were collected using web-based online survey forms between February and April 2022. A questionnaire form regarding personal traits and professional characteristics, the Compassion Fatigue-Short Scale, and Basic Personality Traits Inventory were used to collect the data. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression analysis.

RESULTS

The nurses' compassion fatigue was moderate, and personality traits were found to be agreeableness, conscientiousness, and extraversion, respectively. There was a negative correlation between compassion fatigue and personality traits of extraversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and openness to experience, yet a positive correlation with neuroticism and negative valence. According to the regression analysis, nurses' personality traits were effective on compassion fatigue by 21.9%. The personality trait of extraversion had a negative impact on compassion fatigue, and neuroticism had a positive impact.

CONCLUSION

This study identified a correlation between nurses' personality traits and compassion fatigue, suggesting that certain personality traits can be predictive factors of compassion fatigue. The limited number of studies discussing personality traits and compassion fatigue together increases the importance of the current study, which may shed light on future studies to be conducted on similar topics.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND OTHER POLICIES

This study has important implications for nurse managers. Nurse managers can predict whether they may experience compassion fatigue based on their personality traits.

Compassion Fatigue in Informal Caregivers of Children with Cancer; a Section from Turkey

Compassion fatigue is the natural stress caused by the strong desire to help a valued person and alleviate the pain he/she suffers after he/she undergoes a traumatizing event. That caregiver who witnesses the physical suffering of the patient, who makes intense effort during the process deprived of the social, psychological, or economic support they need is among the reasons causing compassion fatigue. In this study, the aim was to test and describe the effects of compassion fatigue on informal caregivers of children with cancer. The study is phenomenological, a form of a qualitative study. The participants were the relatives of children with cancer. The data were obtained through in-depth interviews. The audio-recorded interviews were analyzed through the inductive thematic analysis to obtain answers to the questions. The findings were categorized under four headings which compassion fatigue was addressed: Empathy ability, compassion stress, problems experienced by the participants as components of compassion fatigue. The results of this study demonstrated that mothers were at risk of compassion fatigue. Those who give care to their relatives are faced with problems more than professionals. It is recommended that the implementation of multidisciplinary interventions that will improve caregivers' well-being, and preventive social work interventions, will prevent them from compassion fatigue.

Compassion fatigue among haemodialysis nurses in public and private hospitals in China

AIM

This study was conducted to identify and compare the levels of compassion fatigue and job satisfaction among haemodialysis nurses in public and private hospitals in China and explore explanatory factors based on sociodemographic and occupational characteristics.

METHODS

A descriptive study was conducted using a self-designed demographic questionnaire, the Professional Quality of Life Scale and the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire, with responses from 283 haemodialysis nurses working at six public and private hospitals in China between June and November 2018.

RESULTS

The compassion fatigue score of public hospital nurses was significantly higher than that of private hospital nurses. Univariate analysis showed that there were significant differences in compassion fatigue among nurses based on the number of years worked, nature of employment, and education level. Correlational analysis showed a negative correlation between overall job satisfaction and compassion fatigue in both public and private hospitals. Multiple regression analysis showed that compassion fatigue among haemodialysis nurses in public hospitals was associated with years worked, type of employment, and intrinsic and extrinsic satisfaction, whereas in private hospitals, education level, years worked, and intrinsic and extrinsic satisfaction were significant.

CONCLUSION

Haemodialysis nurses in public hospitals are more likely to develop compassion fatigue than those in private hospitals.
