An atypical presentation of pre-eclampsia (PET) in a patient diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome: A case report

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an autoimmune neurological disorder with unknown aetiology. Given the incidence of GBS is between 1.2 and 1.9 cases per 100,000 people annually [1], it is extremely rare in pregnancy. We report a case with a challenging diagnosis of pre-eclampsia (PET) in a 34-year-old diabetic primigravida who was diagnosed with GBS at 30 weeks of gestation. At her initial presentation, she complained of progressive weakness of her limbs and facial muscles. This was associated with difficulty swallowing. The diagnosis of GBS was made based on electromyography (EMG) and clinical findings. She was managed conservatively with supportive management and was delivered by lower segment caesarean section at 34 weeks of gestation due to rapidly deteriorating liver function tests (LFTs) in the likely setting of PET.

Intravenous immunoglobulin in COVID-19 associated Guillain-Barré syndrome in pregnancy

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a rise in cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). This autoimmune sequela is a manifestation of the neurotropism potential of the virus. At present, knowledge regarding the pathophysiology, clinical features, management and outcomes of the condition is still evolving. This paper presents the case of a 22-year-old pregnant patient who came in with a history of upper respiratory tract symptoms followed by acroparaesthesia and progressive ascending weakness. She was confirmed to have COVID-19 and GBS and was subsequently managed with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) followed by supportive therapy. To the authors' knowledge and based on their literature search, this is the first reported case of GBS in a COVID-19 confirmed pregnant patient who received IVIg.

A case of Guillain-Barre syndrome with pregnancy who delivered in ICU: a rare outcome of rare co-occurrence

Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) in pregnancy is a rare co-occurrence and it is generally accepted that it carries a high maternal risk. We report a 40-year-old housewife who developed GBS with respiratory failure during the third trimester (31 weeks of gestation). She had preterm vaginal delivery on ventilator support at 34 weeks of gestation in neurology intensive care unit. She managed successfully with ventilatory support, intravenous immunoglobulin and other supportive measures.
