Abstract
Nursing staff provides patient care in an occupational environment that often imposes challenges that affect significantly the musculoskeletal system. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are common in nursing stuff and have a negative impact in their professional and daily activities. In the current editorial, the duties of nursing staff, the types of musculoskeletal disorders, the predisposing factors (including factors related to professional tasks/ergonomics and to working schedules, psychological, social and individual factors) and their impact on working ability and quality of life nursing staff are summarized and preventive measures are proposed.

Abstract
AIM To summarize current literature on the definition, categorization and measurement of social support in studies of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among hospital nurses. DESIGN A scoping review. DATA SOURCES A literature search of four databases (CINAHL, Medline, Embase and Web of Science) was employed to map the evidence between January 2012 and April 2023 on the definition, categorization and measurement of social support in studies of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among nurses in hospital settings. REVIEW METHODS This review adopted Arksey and O'Malley's framework for conducting scoping reviews. Data extraction was reported using PRISMA Scoping Review guidelines and articles synthesized using a descriptive approach. RESULTS Fifteen studies met the criteria for inclusion in the review. Social support was distinctly defined in only two studies. Four main categories of social support identified were Co-worker, Supervisor, Family and Overall support. Eight tools were found to measure social support, and the most used tool was the Job Content Questionnaire. CONCLUSIONS The review identified that social support is often not explicitly defined. Furthermore, social support can be categorized and measured in different ways, using diverse tools. This variation may affect the understanding of social support and the approaches in measuring and providing social support in the workplace. IMPACT Studies should clearly define the social support category evaluated, to facilitate comparisons between studies of nurses with work-related musculoskeletal disorders. Healthcare managers should obtain feedback from nurses to ensure that the category of social support provided matches that which the nurse requires to ensure it helps the nurse from an organizational perspective. Healthy social relationships should be encouraged among nurses to promote nurses' well-being and by extension patient care. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION There was no patient or public involvement.

Abstract
Nursing is a profession with high rates of workplace injuries, hazards, and turnover. Improving the health and safety of nurses at work is vital to retain and grow the workforce to meet future demands. The purpose of this study was to describe the breadth of pain among American nurses and explore the relationships between this pain and modifiable work factors and perceived work performance. We used a cross-sectional descriptive design of 2312 nurses from across the United States. Nurses completed a survey containing questions about demographics, the presence of pain in the past week, the number of pain sites, pain locations, severity, and the impact on work performance. The median number of pain locations reported was 2, back pain was the most reported pain site, and average pain severity ranged from 4 to 5. Significant modifiable work factors associated with pain were average patient load and shift length. Many participants indicated that their pain impacted work performance, while a smaller proportion acknowledged that their pain impacted patient care. Pain among nurses spans multiple locations, is moderately severe, and impacts work performance. Addressing related modifiable work factors may decrease pain and the impact on the health, safety, and work performance of the nursing workforce.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Work-related musculoskeletal disorders significantly impact the job performance and quality of life of nursing personnel in China, necessitating an understanding of their prevalence and risk factors to enhance occupational health and improve medical safety. OBJECTIVE To systematically evaluate the prevalence and risk factors of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among clinical nurses in China. DESIGN Systematic literature review and meta-analysis. METHODS A computerized search was conducted on databases, including the China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database, Wanfang Database, China Biomedical Literature Database, Weipu Database, Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and CINAHL, covering studies from inception to February 28, 2024, addressing the risk factors for work-related musculoskeletal disorders among clinical nursing professionals in China. The meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.4 and Stata 14 software. RESULTS The analysis included 23 articles, involving a total of 21,042 cases, and revealed a prevalence rate of 79 % (95 % CI: 73 %-84 %) for work-related musculoskeletal disorders among clinical nursing staff in China. Subgroup analysis revealed that the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders was highest among those with length of service >15 years, at 87 %; the 31-40 age group had a higher prevalence than other age groups, at 85 %; female nurses exhibited a prevalence rate of 80 %, surpassing male nurses at 77 %, while surgical nurses had a higher prevalence rate (83 %) than those in other departments. The most affected body parts were the neck (58 %), waist (57 %), shoulders (49 %), and back (35 %). Identified risk factors for work-related musculoskeletal disorders among clinical nurses in China included age >35 years (OR = 1.69, 95 % CI: 1.16-2.45), length of service ≥10 years (OR = 3.30, 95 % CI: 1.84-5.92), marital status (married) (OR = 2.19, 95 % CI: 1.91-2.50), heavy workload (OR = 2.46, 95 % CI: 1.25-4.83), weekly work hours >40 h (OR = 1.50, 95 % CI: 1.34-1.67), daily work hours >8 h (OR = 1.71, 95 % CI: 1.32-2.21), strong sense of work fatigue (OR = 1.47, 95 % CI: 1.22-1.76), and high night shift frequency (OR = 1.81, 95 % CI: 1.62-2.02). Regular physical exercise was found to be a protective factor (OR = 0.68, 95 % CI: 0.56-0.82). CONCLUSION The overall prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among clinical nursing staff in China was 79 %. Age >35 years, length of service ≥10 years, marital status (married), heavy workload, weekly work hours >40 h, daily work hours >8 h, strong sense of work fatigue, and night shift frequency were identified as risk factors. Nursing administrators and staff can take proactive measures against the aforementioned factors to reduce the risk of illness and ensure the safety of medical care. Abstract
Background Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) pose a pervasive concern among nursing professionals due to the high physical workload. Simultaneously, the complex relationship between MSDs and mental health outcomes in this population remains an area of significant interest and importance. Objective This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of MSDs and their relationships with burnout and psychological suffering within the nursing workforce. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2020 involving 291 nursing professionals in Brazil. Standardized questionnaires were employed to gather information on MSDs, mental health outcomes, and pertinent work-related factors. Robust statistical analyses were conducted to ascertain the prevalence of MSDs, establish associations between MSDs and mental health outcomes, and delineate the influence of work-related factors on these associations. Statistical analysis was performed using the R software. Results The study revealed a significant prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs) among nursing workers, focusing on regions that include the lower back, upper back, neck, and shoulders. Individuals with MSIs in the lower back showed a marked increase in emotional exhaustion (p = 0.02), as did those with MSIs in the upper back (p <0.01) and depersonalization (p = 0.07). On the other hand, nursing professionals who reported MSIs in the neck and shoulders had considerably higher scores in emotional exhaustion (p <0.01 and p = 0.01, respectively) and depersonalization (p = 0.05 and p = 0.05, respectively). However, no significant correlations emerged between MSIs and depression or work-related factors. Conclusions This study highlights the urgency of implementing proactive measures to prevent and manage MSDs within the nursing profession. Moreover, it emphasizes the critical need to enhance working conditions and provide robust support mechanisms to safeguard the mental health of nursing professionals.Open AccessOpen Access.

Abstract
Objective: Poorer sleep quality and insufficient sleep increase the risk of physical pain. The current study examined the daily associations between sleep and physical pain symptoms and tested the moderating role of trait and state mindfulness in this relationship. Methods: Sixty hospital nurses (Mage=35.4 ± 11.8 years) completed 14-day ecological momentary assessment (EMA) and sleep actigraphy. EMA measured physical pain frequency and interference (1×/day) and state mindfulness (3×/day). Multilevel modelling was used to examine the associations at the between-person and within-person levels. Results: After nights with poorer sleep quality, lower sleep sufficiency, and more insomnia symptoms, the frequency of physical pain symptoms and pain interference were greater than usual. Overall, those with poorer sleep quality, lower sleep sufficiency, and more insomnia symptoms reported more physical pain symptoms and greater pain interference. Higher state mindfulness buffered the negative within-person association between sleep efficiency and physical pain frequency. There was evidence that the joint moderating effects of trait and state mindfulness yielded more protective benefits in the relationship between sleep quality and physical pain than trait or state mindfulness alone. Conclusion: Even without mindfulness training, one's mindfulness may be protective against the adverse effects of poor sleep quality on physical pain.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMDs) and to determine whether differences regarding the employment status (standard and non-standard), according to gender, increased the probability of WRMDs. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional study. METHODS Data from the 2019 National Health Survey (NHS) in Brazil were used. In total, 50,066 participants, both women and men, aged 18-65 years were included. Data were analysed for self-reported WRMDs. The binary logistic regression model, adjusting for possible covariables, was used to evaluate the association between working in the labour market and the occurrence of WRMDs. For covariates in the multivariate analysis, a P-value of <0.20 was considered in the univariate analysis. The variables with a P-value of <0.05 remained in the model. The odds ratio (OR), together with their confidence intervals at 95% (95% CI), were estimates both in the univariate and multivariate models. RESULTS The prevalence of WRMDs was higher in women (4.2%) than men (1.9%). The likelihood of WRMDs was associated with the employment status only among men and proved to be lower for non-standard employment than standard employment (OR = 0.61; 95% CI = 0.43-0.87). Only among women, an increase in the likelihood of WRMDs associated with exposure to occupational noise was observed (OR = 1.77; 95% CI = 1.31-2.38) and a less favourable self-reported health (OR = 1.66; 95% CI = 1.08-2.54). Results showed higher change of WRMD for men and women associated with rheumatoid arthritis (men: OR = 3.94; 95% CI = 2.10-7.38; women: OR = 2.39; 95% CI = 1.68-3.39), depression (men: OR = 2.62; 95% CI = 1.54-4.45; women: OR = 2.39; 95% CI = 1.68-3.39) and occupational accidents (men: OR = 4.36; 95% CI = 2.34-8.14; women: OR = 2.20; 95% CI = 1.19-4.07). CONCLUSIONS It is possible that the "double presence" that involves both the productive and reproductive spheres explains the higher prevalence of WRMDs among women Indicators that are sensitive to the effects of gender norms are necessary to understand the context of inequalities in the prevalence of WRMDs. The results of this study should be considered when developing strategies in the workplace and public health policies to reduce the prevalence of WRMDs.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Previous research has identified associations between work-family conflict (WFC) and health outcomes (e.g., musculoskeletal pain). This study investigated whether WFC and family-work conflict explain relationships between exposure to work-related hazards and musculoskeletal pain and stress for workers undertaking some or all of their work at home. Possible differences by home workspace location were also explored. METHODS Longitudinal survey data were collected from workers in Australia engaged in work from home for at least two days per week. Data was collected at four timepoints approximately 6 months apart (Baseline [October 2020] n = 897; Wave 1 [May/June 2021] n = 368; Wave 2 [October/November 2021] n = 336; Wave 3 [May 2022] n = 269). Subjective measures of work-related psychosocial hazards, occupational sitting and physical activity, musculoskeletal pain, and stress were collected via an online questionnaire. Mediation analyses were conducted using the R package "mediation." Analyses were also conducted with the data set stratified by home office location, using R version 4.1.3. RESULTS Both WFC and family-work conflict acted as mediators between psychosocial work-related hazards and musculoskeletal pain and stress. WFC mediated more relationships than family-work conflict. Location of home workspace was important, particularly for those working in a space at home where they may be subject to interruptions. CONCLUSION Addressing WFC is a legitimate means through which musculoskeletal pain and stress can be reduced. Organizational risk management strategies need to address all work-related risks, including those stemming from work-life interaction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses have been identified as an occupational group at increased risk of suicide. This systematic review examines the prevalence of, and factors influencing, suicide and related behaviours among nurses and midwives (PROSPERO pre-registration CRD42021270297). METHODS MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and CINAHL were searched. Articles published from 1996 onwards exploring suicidal thoughts and behaviours among nurses and midwives were included. Quality of included studies was assessed. Articles were subjected to narrative synthesis informed by suicide data examined, study design, and quality. PRISMA guidelines were followed. RESULTS A total of 100 studies were eligible for inclusion in the review. Articles examining suicide exclusively among midwives were absent from the literature. Several studies confirmed that nursing professionals, especially female, are at increased risk of suicide, particularly by self-poisoning. Factors contributing to risk include psychiatric disorders, alcohol and substance misuse, physical health problems, and occupational and interpersonal difficulties. In studies of non-fatal suicidal behaviours, including during the COVID-19 pandemic, psychiatric, psychological, physical and occupational factors were contributory. There has been little investigation of interventions for prevention of suicide in nurses. LIMITATIONS Only articles published in English language were reviewed. CONCLUSIONS The findings highlight the risk of suicide in nurses. They also show a combination of factors contribute to suicide and non-fatal suicidal behaviour in nurses, with psychiatric, psychological, physical health, occupational and substance misuse (especially alcohol) problems being particularly important. The limited evidence regarding prevention measures indicates a major need to develop primary and secondary interventions for this at-risk occupational group, for example, education regarding enhancing wellbeing and safe alcohol use, alongside accessible psychological support.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To describe the experience of nurses working while in pain and the potential impact on work performance. Pain is described more broadly and inclusive of musculoskeletal injuries, psychological and emotional pain. BACKGROUND Nurse have been recognised as developing pain and injuries; however, the experience of nurses working while in pain and its impact is not well-described. DESIGN A qualitative descriptive analysis of interviews from an explanatory mixed methods study. METHODS Twenty direct care nurses who experienced pain in the past week participated in the semi-structured interviews. Transcripts were analysed using content analysis. Guidelines for reporting following the COREQ checklist. RESULTS Categories identified: (1) pain provocation, quality of pain, refers, severity, and time (PQRST); (2) Avoiding pain at work; (3) Hiding pain's impact; (4) Tools at Work; (5) Pain recovery at home; (6) Career consequences; and (7) 'Supernurse' culture; (8) Stigma and its impact on pain management; and (9) Dream work environment. CONCLUSIONS Pain was described as part of nursing and impacted nurses' career plans and performance. Nurses described minimising the direct impact on their patient care but admitted that there was an impact on teamwork and thinking which have been linked to negative patient outcomes. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Clinical practice was an aggravating factor for all nurses in the study and impacted their performance and career trajectory. Workplace tools to decrease nurse injury and pain exist; however, tools were not used often due to lack of resources and training. The culture of nursing that accepts pain as part of the job needs to be addressed.

Abstract
This study aims to identify the prevalence of workaholism and work-family interaction, their relationship and their variation according sociodemographic and occupational characteristics among nurses. A quantitative, descriptive, correlational and transversal study was conducted with a sample of 839 Portuguese nurses. Regarding workaholism, 27% of workaholic nurses were identified, scoring a higher mean value for excessive work. For work-family interaction, the dimensions showing the highest mean values were the negative work-family interaction and the positive family-work interaction. The variables identified as significant predictors of workaholism were the work-family interaction (39%), occupational variables (10.6%) and sociodemographic variables (1.2%). Among the occupational and professional variables, the women, age equal or less than 37 years and perception of stressful work, were highlighted. The confirmation of workaholism in nurses, as well as its predictive variables are significantly important for professionals and organizations to better understand the impact of this phenomenon, particularly in mental health and to encourage the development of programmes aiming to promote health at the workplace.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To relate self-reported health symptoms and the impacts of work in terms of physical, social, and psychological illness in nursing professionals. METHOD Cross-sectional, correlational study carried out in a public hospital in the southern region of Brazil. A sample of nursing professionals who worked in direct care participated in the study. A social-occupational questionnaire of self-reported health symptoms and the Work-Related Damage Assessment Scale were used. The analysis was descriptive and analytical. Chi-square test and Spearman's correlation coefficient were used, with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS A total of 308 professionals participated, with a prevalence of physical illness and higher means for pain in the body, legs and back. Significant relations were identified among the social-occupational variables, health symptoms, and physical, social or psychological illness. High and moderate correlations among the factors investigated were evidenced. CONCLUSION The impact of work on nursing professionals' health is evidenced by the association between self-reported health symptoms and illness, especially the physical or social one, and reinforces the need for professional awareness over situations that are harmful to health.

Abstract
Background Midwives have a high risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs), which are the leading cause of pain and disability. However, the association between job stress and WMSDs among midwives has not been studied. The aim of this project was to specifically describe relationships between the job stress and WMSDs among a sample of hospital midwives in Chenzhou, Hunan Province, China. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study among a sample of 769 eligible midwives in the city of Chenzhou in Hunan Province, China from May 2018 to January 2019. All participants completed a questionnaire regarding the presence and severity of different pain symptoms and job stress assessed by the Korean occupational stress scale. Results A total of 597 participants responded (77.6%), and 491 (82.2%) reported that they had experienced WMSDs at some time over a 12-month period. The most common pain site was low back (72.7%), followed by the neck (52.8%) and shoulders (42.7%). We revealed that various aspects of job stress were associated with WMSDs in the current study, namely “Owing to my workload, I always feel time pressure” (OR, 2.05; 95% CI: 1.28–3.28), “My job has become increasingly overbearing” (OR, 2.34; 95% CI: 1.46–3.77), “My work requires long lasting concentration” (OR, 3.50; 95% CI: 2.13–5.74), “I have to do various jobs simultaneously”, (OR, 3.15; 95% CI: 1.93–5.14)), “My work requires creativity” (OR, 2.15; 95% CI: 1.31–3.54), “My work requires a high level of skill or knowledge” (OR, 2.83; 95% CI: 1.67–4.80), “My supervisor is helpful in getting the job done” (OR, 0.53; 95% CI: 0.33–0.84), “I have someone who understands my difficulties at work” (OR, 0.53; 95% CI: 0.34–0.85), “Undesirable changes (ie, downsizing) will come to my job” (OR, 3.28; 95% CI: 2.01–5.77), “My company provides me with sufficient organizational support” (OR, 0.47; 95% CI: 0.29–0.74), “Departments cooperate each other without conflicts” (OR, 0.50; 95% CI: 0.32–0.80), “I am provided with the opportunity to develop my capacity” (OR, 0.57; 95% CI: 0.36–0.91) and “My company climate is authoritative and hierarchical” (OR: 3.21; 95% CI: 1.97-5.23). Conclusion Overall, this study suggests that job stress has an important influence on WMSDs among a sample of hospital midwives in Chenzhou, Hunan Province, China. Given the multifaceted nature of identified risk, a comprehensive approach to reduce this risk is clearly required and a job stress management program will be essential.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Musculoskeletal disorders are one of the most important occupational problems especially among nurses. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in upper limbs and its associated psychosocial factors in the workplace. METHODS A systematic review was conducted by searching the Medline/PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, ISI/web of knowledge and Google Scholar databases. The authors classified studies into categories of psychological work stressors and musculoskeletal problems. The statistical analysis was performed using Stata software. RESULTS We found 1742 articles in our initial search. After reviewing the titles, abstracts and full texts, 66 articles were finally analyzed. Psychosocial factors affecting the prevalence of upper limb musculoskeletal disorders among nurses were identified which included boring work, inadequate staffing, job demands, insufficient support, time pressure, decision latitude, job dissatisfaction, and job stress. There was a significant relationship between these factors and prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in the wrists, shoulders, neck and shoulders, and wrists and hands. CONCLUSION Collectively, the results of this study provide strong evidence of some psychosocial factors affecting the prevalence of upper limb musculoskeletal disorders among nurses. Thus, organizational interventions to minimize these stressors may be promising in reducing one risk factor for the development of nurses' musculoskeletal disorders. These interventions should not only consider the factors of physical ergonomics but also seek to improve the organizational aspects of the workplace.

Abstract
AIM To identify and compare workaholism, engagement and family interaction levels among Portuguese and Spanish nurses. BACKGROUND The contribution of nursing management and leadership to workers' health and well-being is cardinal to ensure a healthy work environment. However, factors such as workaholism, engagement and family interaction can strongly influence nurses' performance, well-being and safety. METHOD A multicentre, comparative and cross-sectional study using 333 Portuguese (54.1%) and Spanish (45.9%) nurses working in hospitals. RESULTS Portuguese nurses showed higher levels for workaholism, negative work-family interaction and negative family-work interaction, while Spanish nurses presented higher levels of engagement, positive work-family interaction and positive family-work interaction. Gender, age, job experience time, academic training, working schedule and type of employment contract influenced workaholism, engagement and work-family interaction among nurses from both countries. CONCLUSION During their professional practice, nurses perceived their stress differently according to each country, with Portuguese nurses presenting worst psychological conditions than Spanish nurses, namely higher workaholism, negative work-family interactions and lower engagement. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT Workaholism, engagement and work-family interaction are important areas in which nursing managers must invest to better respond to the new challenges of work contexts.

A Cross-Sectional Epidemiological Survey of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders and Analysis of Its Influencing Factors among Coal Mine Workers in Xinjiang. Abstract
This study is to investigate the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and the influencing factors among coal mine workers employed in on-site operations. The job burnout scale and MSD scale were implemented to investigate a random sample of 1,500 coal mine workers working in on-site operations in Xinjiang, China. In total, 1,325 valid questionnaires were collected, with a recovery rate of 88.33% (1,325/1,500). The rate of job burnout was 90%, of which 39.8% were categorized as mild burnout, 43.8% as moderate burnout, and 6.4% as severe burnout; the average job burnout score was 50.77 ± 11.93. The annual prevalence of MSDs was 65.6%, with the highest annual prevalence in the waist (50.7%), followed by the neck, shoulder, and knee, and the lowest prevalence in the elbow (18.8%). Of the areas of the body affected by work-related MSDs, the highest proportion of requests for leave of absence was related to the waist, accounting for 25.7% of requests, while the lowest proportion (13.4%) was related to the wrist. In addition, the incidence of MSDs increased with the years of service. The lowest incidence of MSDs was associated with the two-shift and three-group working pattern. The prevalence of MSDs in the neck and waist was higher in women than in men. The prevalence of MSDs in various body parts increased with the years of service. Moreover, multiple logistic regression indicated that three shifts with four groups (OR = 1.096, 95% CI: 0.832-1.445), working more than 10 years (OR = 3.396, 95% CI: 2.369-5.748), working more than 20 years (OR = 3.008, 95% CI: 1.419-6.337), significant bending (OR = 2.062, 95% CI: 1.400-3.038), forward neck tilting (OR = 1.572, 95% CI: 1.071-2.281), maximum force operation within a short period of time (OR = 1.7222, 95% CI: 1.164-2.547), repeated movement of upper arms or fingers (OR = 1.495, 95% CI: 1.034-2.161), slip or fall incidents (OR = 1.124, 95% CI: 1.039-1.216), work under conditions of cold or temperature variations (OR = 1.911, 95% CI: 1.342-2.720), mild burnout (OR = 1.492, 95% CI: 1.016-2.191), moderate burnout (OR = 1.852, 95% CI: 1.267-2.708), and severe burnout (OR = 2.001, 95% CI: 1.145-3.496) were risk factors for MSDs. In conclusion, there is a high annual prevalence of MSDs among the coal mine workers employed in on-site operations in Xinjiang, China. Measures to reduce this prevalence are required.
