Abstract
BACKGROUND CONTEXT The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), is a widely used patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) for assessing functional status in individuals with lumbar spine pathology. The ODI is used by surgeons to determine the initial status and monitor progress after surgery. Compiled ODI data enables comparisons between different surgical techniques. Degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DLS) often causes symptoms such as back pain and neurogenic claudication affecting quality of life and activities of daily living captured by the ODI. Despite extensive studies on ODI changes after spinal surgery, little is known about the characteristics and changes in the different ODI subsections. PURPOSE To analyze the baseline characteristics and changes in total ODI and ODI subsections 2 years after elective lumbar surgery. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective analysis on patients prospectively enrolled who underwent spinal surgery for degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis from 2016 to 2018. The ODI was assessed preoperatively and 2 years postoperatively. PATIENT SAMPLE A total of 265 patients were included in the study, 60% were female. The mean age of the patients was 67±8 years, and the mean BMI was 30±6 kg/m2. OUTCOME MEASURES The analysis considered the differences in ODI scores before and after surgery, as well as the changes in all ODI subsections 2 years after elective lumbar surgery for DLS. METHODS The analysis evaluated differences in ODI scores and variations in different subsections. Patients without an ODI follow-up at 2 years were excluded from the study. The study utilized the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test for all prepost paired samples. The Wilcoxon rank sum test was used for sex and procedure comparisons for overall ODI and ODI subsection analysis. Univariate linear regression was applied for overall and subsection specific ODI outcomes with age and BMI as independent variables, respectively. The statistical significance level was set at p<.05. RESULTS Improvement in ODI was observed in 242 patients (91%). The highest baseline disability values were found for the questions regarding pain intensity (3.4±1.3), lifting (3.2±1.9), and standing (3.4±1.3). The lowest preoperative functional limitations were observed in sleeping (1.6±1.3), personal care (1.6±1.4), traveling (1.6±1.2) and sitting (1.5±1.4). At the 2-year follow-up, there was significant improvement in all questions and the overall ODI (all p<.001). The ODI subsections that showed the greatest absolute improvements were changing degree of pain (-2.6), with 89% of patients experiencing improvement, standing (-2.4) with 87% of patients experiencing improvement, and pain intensity (-2.1) with 81% of patients experiencing improvement. The subsections with the least improvement were personal care (-0.6), sitting (-0.7), and sleeping (-0.9). The study found that female patients had a significantly higher preoperative disability in various subsections but showed greater improvement in total ODI compared to male patients (p=.001). Additionally, improvement in sitting (p<.001), traveling (p<.001), social life (p<.001) and sleeping (p=.018) were significantly higher in female patients. Older patients showed significantly less improvement in sitting (p=.005) and sleeping (p=.002). A higher BMI was significantly associated with less improvement in changing degree of pain (p=.025) and higher baseline disability in various subsections. Patients who underwent decompression and fusion had significantly higher baseline disability in several subsections compared to those who underwent decompression alone. There was no significant difference between decompression alone and decompression with fusion in terms of overall improvement in the ODI and improvement in the subsections. CONCLUSION These results offer a more comprehensive understanding of ODI and its changes across different subsections. This insight is invaluable for improving preoperative education and effectively managing patient expectations regarding potential postsurgery disability in specific areas.

Abstract
Introduction Low back pain (LBP) is a common cause of impaired quality of life and disability and studies regarding surgical management of patients with LBP show a high variation in patient-reported success rate. Research question To find valuable preoperative clinical risk factors and variables associated with a non-satisfactory patient-reported outcome following surgery. Materials and methods The Danish surgical spine database (DaneSpine) was used to collect eight years of pre- and postoperative data on patients undergoing single-level fusions with either posterior- (PLIF) or transforaminal lumbar interbody fusions (TLIF). The primary outcome was patient nonsatisfaction. We collected data on European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D), visual analogue scale (VAS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) score, pain intensity, duration of back pain, previous discectomy, and expectations regarding return to work after surgery at 2-year follow-up. Results The cohort included 453 patients of which 19% reported treatment nonsatisfaction. The nonsatisfaction group demonstrated higher preoperative VAS scores for back pain (75 ± 19 vs. 68 ± 21, p = 0.006) and leg pain (65 ± 25 vs. 58 ± 28, p = 0.004). The preoperative EQ-5D score was significantly lower in the nonsatisfaction group (0.203 + 0.262 vs. 0.291 ± 0.312, p = 0.016). There was no statistical significance between patient nonsatisfaction and preoperative ODI score, age, body mass index, duration of back pain or expectations regarding return to work after surgery. Discussion and conclusion Low preoperative EQ-5D scores and high VAS leg and back pain scores were statistically significant with patient nonsatisfaction following surgery and may prove to be valuable tools in the preoperative screening and alignment of patient expectations.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN A single-center retrospective study. PURPOSE To research the predictive factors associated with postoperative patient satisfaction 1 year after minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS-TLIF), a minimally invasive procedure for lumbar degenerative disease. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE There have been reports of numerous variables influencing patient satisfaction with lumbar surgery; however, there have been few investigations on MIS are limited. METHODS This study included 229 patients (107 men and 122 women; mean age, 68.9 years) who received one or two levels of MISTLIF, and the patient's age, gender, disease, paralysis, preoperative physical functions, duration of symptom(s), and surgery-associated factors (waiting for surgery, number of surgical levels, surgical time, and intraoperative blood loss) were studied. Radiographic characteristics and clinical outcomes such as Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) scores and Visual Analog Scale (VAS; 0-100) ODI scores for low back pain, leg pain, and numbness were studied. One year following surgery, patient satisfaction (defined as satisfaction for surgery and for present condition; 0-100) was assessed using VAS and its relationships with investigation factors were examined. RESULTS The mean VAS scores of satisfaction for surgery and for present condition were 88.6 and 84.2, respectively. The results of multiple regression analysis showed that preoperative adverse factors of satisfaction for surgery were being elderly (β =-0.17, p =0.023), high preoperative low back pain VAS scores (β =-0.15, p =0.020), and postoperative adverse factors were high postoperative ODI scores (β =-0.43, p <0.001). In addition, the preoperative adverse factor of satisfaction for present condition was high preoperative low back pain VAS scores (β =-0.21, p =0.002), and postoperative adverse factors were high postoperative ODI scores (β =-0.45, p <0.001) and high postoperative low back pain VAS scores (β =-0.26, p =0.001). CONCLUSIONS According to this study, significant preoperative low back pain and high postoperative ODI score after surgery are linked to patient unhappiness.

Abstract
Introduction The role of patient-reported outcomes in preoperative assessment is not well studied. There is recent interest in studying whether Patient-reported outcomes scores can be used either independently, or in conjunction with clinical findings, in the assessment of patients for surgery. Aims To investigate if improvement in clinically significant scores correlate with post-operative patient satisfaction in 1-2 level transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) surgery. We also aim to define a threshold Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) which correlate with achieving post-operative MCID and patient satisfaction. Methods 1001 patients who underwent single or double level TLIF (Minimally invasive and Open) in our institution with at least 2 years follow up were included in this study. We studied self-reported measures including patient satisfaction and ODI score. Results At 2-year follow-up, the overall mean ODI score improved from 49.7 ± 18.3 to 13.9 ± 15.2 (P < 0.001) with 74.6% of patients meeting the MCID. Patient satisfaction was achieved in 95.3% of all patients. In the MIS group, the preoperative cut-off was determined to be 37.2 at maximal Youden index associated with AUC of 0.72 (95% CI 0.65-0.86). In the open group, the preoperative cut-off was determined to be 37.2 at maximal Youden index associated with AUC of 0.70 (95% CI 0.62-0.77). Using the preoperative cut-offs found, there was no significant difference in patient satisfaction in both MIS and open groups. Conclusions Overall, our patients undergoing TLIF had good 2-year ODI score improvement and patient satisfaction after surgery. While meeting the MCID for ODI score correlates with patients' satisfaction postoperatively, 75% of patients not meeting the MCID for ODI score remained satisfied with the surgery. We are unable to define a threshold pre-operative ODI which correlates with achieving post-operative MCID and patient satisfaction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the growing number of traditional posterior open surgery, the incidence of failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) increases gradually. We aimed to investigate the incidence and risk factors for FBSS following open posterior lumbar surgery for degenerative lumbar disease (DLD). METHOD A multivariable regression analysis was performed for 333 consecutive patients to identify potential risk factors for FBSS. Clinical outcomes were evaluated by the validated North American Spine Society (NASS) Questionnaire and numerical rating scale (NRS) for pain. Demographics, diagnostic characteristics, surgical data, radiographic parameters for each patient were analyzed. RESULT 16.8% of the included patients were classified as FBSS. Univariate analysis showed that age, hypertension, symptom location, intermittent claudication, preoperative pain NRS-leg, HIZ, Modic changes (MCs), surgical strategy and postoperative rehabilitation were related to FBSS. Multivariable logistic regression analysis demonstrated that preoperative NRS-leg (OR:0.80, 95%CI:0.71-0.91, P = 0.001), hypertension (OR: 2.22, 95%CI: 1.10-4.51, P = 0.027), intermittent claudication with waking distance > 100 m (OR: 4.07, 95%CI: 1.75-9.47, P = 0.001) and waking distance ≤ 100 m (OR: 12.43, 95%CI: 5.54-27.92, P < 0.001), HIZ (OR: 8.26, 95%CI: 4.00-17.04, P < 0.001), MCs (OR: 3.41, 95%CI: 1.73-6.71, P < 0.001), postoperative rehabilitation (OR: 2.63, 95%CI: 1.13-6.12, P = 0.024) were risk factors for FBSS. CONCLUSION Open posterior lumbar surgery is an effective treatment for DLD which provides pain reduction and lumbar curve improvement with a considerable satisfaction rate. Lower preoperative NRS-leg, hypertension, intermittent claudication, HIZ, MCs and postoperative rehabilitation are risk factors for FBSS, which can serve as a tool for clinicians to identify at-risk population and provide more effective management to mitigate the doctor-patient contradictions and further occupation of medical resources.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), satisfaction, and minimum clinically important difference (MCID) achievement after minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS-TLIF) in patients stratified by preoperative leg pain. METHODS Patients undergoing MIS-TLIF were collected through retrospective review of a prospectively maintained single-surgeon database. PROMs administered preoperatively/postoperatively included Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Physical Function (PROMIS-PF), visual analog scale (VAS) back/leg pain, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and 12-Item Short Form (SF-12) Physical/Mental Component Score (PCS/MCS). Patients were grouped based on preoperative VAS leg scores: VAS leg ≤7 or VAS leg >7. Inferential statistics were used to compare PROMs, MCID achievement rates, and postoperative satisfaction between groups. RESULTS A total of 562 patients were eligible (168 VAS leg score ≤7; 394 VAS leg score >7). Significant differences between cohorts in postoperative mean PROMs were noted for PROMIS-PF at 6 weeks/2 years, SF-12 PCS at 6 weeks/2 years, SF-12 MCS at 6 weeks/12 weeks/6 months/1 year, VAS back score at 6 weeks/12 weeks/6 months, VAS leg score at 6 weeks/12 weeks/6 months/2 years and ODI at all postoperative time points (P < 0.045, all). In the VAS leg score >7 cohort, a greater proportion achieving MCID for VAS leg score at all postoperative time points and ODI at 12 weeks (P < 0.010, all). Postoperative satisfaction was greater in VAS back score ≤7 cohort for VAS leg score at 6 weeks/12 weeks/6 months/2 years, VAS back score at 12 weeks/2 years, and ODI at 6 weeks/12 weeks/6 months/2 years (P < 0.046, all). CONCLUSIONS Patients with severe preoperative leg pain showed worse postoperative PROM scores and patient satisfaction for disability and back/leg pain. MCID achievement rates across cohorts were similar. Patients with severe leg pain may have expectations for surgical benefits incongruent with their postoperative outcomes, and physicians may seek to manage the preoperative expectations of their patients to reflect likely outcomes after MIS-TLIF.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our study evaluates minimum clinically important difference (MCID) achievement for back pain/leg pain/disability and meeting preoperative expectations as predictors of patient satisfaction after minimally invasive lumbar decompression (MIS-LD) surgery. METHODS Single/multilevel MIS-LD procedures were identified. Patient-reported outcome measures (preoperative/postoperative), expectations (preoperative), and satisfaction (postoperative) were collected for visual analog scale (VAS) back/VAS leg/Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Student's t-test assessed patient-reported outcome measure improvement from preoperative baseline. Correlations between outcome and satisfaction scores were evaluated using the Pearson correlation coefficient and categorized according to strength of relationship. MCID achievement and meeting expectations were evaluated as predictors of postoperative patient satisfaction with simple linear regression. Comparison of meeting expectations or achieving MCID as predictors of satisfaction scores was performed using a post hoc Suest test comparison of standardized β-coefficients. RESULTS A total of 329 patients were included. All outcomes improved from baselines (P < 0.001, all) at all postoperative time points and demonstrated strong and negative correlations with satisfaction scores (P < 0.001, all). Majority of patients had their expectations met for ODI/VAS back/VAS leg and achieved MCID for ODI/VAS back/VAS leg at all time points and overall. Both MCID achievement and meeting preoperative expectations demonstrated significant associations with satisfaction scores at all time points for ODI/VAS back/VAS leg. Post hoc analysis of predictors of patient satisfaction in pain and disability demonstrated that MCID achievement was an equivalent predictor to meeting patient preoperative expectations at all postoperative time points. CONCLUSION Pain/disability improved after MIS-LD; improvement was strongly correlated with postoperative satisfaction. Meeting expectations/MCID achievement is associated with satisfaction. MCID achievement was equivalent to meeting expectations in predicting satisfaction at all postoperative time points for pain/disability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND CONTEXT Patients undergoing minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MI-TLIF) frequently present with lower extremity neurologic symptoms with or without associated lower back pain. While symptomatic improvement of leg and back pain has been reported, the resolution of back pain when it is a predominant presenting symptom remains underreported following MI-TLIF. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to compare clinical outcomes at 1 year of patients undergoing MI-TLIF with lower extremity neurologic symptoms with and without a significant component of back pain. STUDY DESIGN A retrospective review of prospectively collected data from a single surgeon surgical database from 2017 to 2019 was performed. PATIENT SAMPLE Fifty one patients undergoing MI-TLIF. OUTCOME MEASURES Self-reported measures included the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Visual analog scale back pain (VAS-back), and VAS leg pain (VAS-leg). METHODS Patients were divided into two groups: Leg Pain Predominant (patients reported greater than 50% leg pain upon presentation) and Back Pain Predominant (patients reported 50% or greater back pain). Multivariate analysis was performed to determine differences between groups based upon any significantly baseline characteristics. RESULTS Preoperative demographic and radiographic outcomes were similar between the two groups. Both groups demonstrated significant improvement in ODI, VAS-Back and VAS-leg at 1-year postoperatively. On multivariate analysis, there were differences in ODI at 1-year, 1-year back pain, and 1-year leg pain between groups with those who initially presented with leg pain having a lower ODI, VAS Back, and VAS leg. Patients who presented with predominantly leg pain were more likely to meet minimal clinically important difference (MCID) criteria for ODI and VAS-back compared to those with predominantly back pain. CONCLUSION Following MI-TLIF, patients with lower extremity neurologic symptoms with and without a significant component of back pain have improvements in back pain, leg pain, and ODI regardless of their primary presenting pain complaint; however, patients who presented with predominantly leg pain were more likely to meet MCID criteria for improvement in their back pain and ODI score.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare patient-reported outcomes (PROMs), satisfaction, and minimum clinically important difference (MCID) achievement following minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion stratified by preoperative disability. METHODS Minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusions were grouped by preoperative Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) score: ODI <41 or ODI ≥41. PROMs administered pre/postoperatively included Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System physical function (PROMIS-PF), visual analog scale (VAS) back/leg, ODI, and 12-Item Short-Form Physical Composite Score (SF-12 PCS)/12-Item Short-Form Mental Composite Score (SF-12 MCS). Satisfaction scores were collected for VAS back/leg and ODI. Coarsened exact match controlled for differences between cohorts. T tests compared mean PROMs and postoperative improvement/satisfaction between cohorts. Simple logistic regression compared MCID achievement. RESULTS After coarsened exact matching, there were 118 patients in the ODI ≤41 and 377 patients in the ODI >41 cohort. The ODI >41 cohort saw greater postoperative inpatient VAS pain score and narcotic consumption on days 0/1 (P < 0.018, all). PROMs differed between cohorts: PROMIS-PF, SF-12 PCS, ODI, VAS back/leg at all postoperative time points and SF-12 MCS at 6 weeks/12 weeks/6 months/1 year (P < 0.045, all). Patients in the ODI >41 cohort demonstrated greater proportion achieving MCID for ODI at all postoperative time points and for SF-12 MCS 6-week/12-week/6-month/1-year (P < 0.040, all). The ODI ≤41 cohort demonstrated greater MCID achievement for overall PROMIS-PF and SF-12 PCS 6 months (P < 0.047, all). Postoperative satisfaction was greater in the ODI ≤41 cohort for VAS leg 6 weeks/12 weeks, VAS back 6 weeks/12 weeks, and ODI all postoperative time points (P < 0.048, all). CONCLUSIONS Preoperative disability associated with worse postoperative PROMs and patient satisfaction for disability, back/leg pain at multiple time points. MCID achievement rates across cohorts were similar for most PROMs at most postoperative time points. Patients with severe disability may have unrealistic expectations for surgical benefits, influencing corresponding postoperative satisfaction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Limited literature has addressed impact of preoperative back pain severity on patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), recovery ratios (RRs), and patient satisfaction following minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS TLIF). METHODS MIS TLIFs were retrospectively identified and grouped: preoperative visual analog scale (VAS) back ≤7 or VAS back >7. PROMs, including PROMIS-PF, VAS back and leg, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and SF-12 Physical Composite Score and Mental Composite Score (MCS), were collected pre- and postoperatively. A PROM's RR was calculated as proportion of postoperative improvement to overall potential improvement. RESULTS In total, 740 patients were included: 359 patients with VAS back ≤7 and 381 patients with VAS back >7. The VAS back >7 cohort reported significantly greater postoperative inpatient pain (P ≤ .003, both). All preoperative and the following postoperative PROMs favored the VAS back ≤7 cohort: PROMIS-PF 2-years, VAS back overall, SF-12 Physical Composite Score 12 weeks and 1 year, SF-12 MCS 6 weeks/12 weeks, VAS leg 6 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months, and 2 years, and ODI overall (P ≤ 0.048, all). The VAS back >7 cohort demonstrated greater delta PROMs for all VAS back and ODI except 2 years (P ≤ 0.021, all). A greater proportion of patients in the VAS back >7 group achieved minimal clinically important difference for VAS back overall, ODI 6 weeks/12 weeks, PROMIS-PF 6 weeks, and SF-12 MCS 6 weeks/6 months (P ≤ 0.044, all). The VAS back>7 cohort RR was significantly greater for VAS back 6 months and VAS leg 6 months/2 years (P ≤ 0.034, all). The VAS back ≤7 cohort's postoperative satisfaction was significantly greater for VAS back 12 weeks, VAS leg 12 weeks, and ODI 6 weeks/12 weeks (P ≤ 0.046, all). CONCLUSIONS Patients with greater preoperative back pain demonstrated significantly worse postoperative scores for most PROMs at most time points and significantly worse patient satisfaction for disability, back and leg pain at multiple time points.

Abstract
Study Design Retrospective cohort. Purpose To investigate the impact of meeting a patient’s preoperative expectations for back or leg pain or the achievement of minimum clinically important difference (MCID) on patient satisfaction following lumbar fusion. Overview of Literature Few studies have compared if MCID achievement or meeting preoperative expectations for pain reduction affects patient satisfaction. Methods A surgical database was reviewed for eligible patients who underwent lumbar fusion. Patient satisfaction and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for back and leg pain were the outcomes of interest. Meeting expectations was calculated as a difference of ≤0 between preoperative expectations and postoperative VAS scores. MCID achievement was calculated by comparing changes in VAS scores with established values. Meeting preoperative expectations or MCID achievement as predictors of patient satisfaction was evaluated using regression analysis. Results A total of 134 patients were included in this study. Patients demonstrated significant improvements in VAS back and VAS leg (p<0.001). At 1 year, 56.4% of patients had their VAS back expectations met compared with 59.5% for VAS leg. Similarly, at 1 year, 77.3% and 71.3% of patients achieved MCID for VAS back and leg, respectively. Meeting expectations for VAS back was significantly associated with patient satisfaction at all postoperative timepoints; however, MCID achievement only demonstrated a significant association with patient satisfaction at 6 and 12 weeks (all, p≤0.024). Meeting VAS leg expectations and MCID achievement both demonstrated a significant association with patient satisfaction at all postoperative timepoints (all, p≤0.02). No differences between MCID achievement and meeting expectations as predictors of satisfaction were noted. Conclusions The majority of patients achieved MCID and had their back and leg pain expectations met by 1 year. Both measures were significant predictors of patient satisfaction and suggest that MCID achievement may act as a suitable substitute for patient satisfaction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Meeting patient expectations is believed to impact satisfaction scores; however, the influence of achieving a minimum clinically important difference (MCID) is scarcely reported. This study aims to evaluate meeting patient expectations or MCID achievement for pain and disability as predictors of patient satisfaction. METHODS A retrospective review of single or multilevel lumbar fusion patients was performed. Patients with missing preoperative Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) expectation questionnaires were excluded. Preoperative expectations and postoperative satisfaction scores for visual analog scale (VAS) back, VAS leg, and ODI were collected. Meeting expectations was defined as scores less than or equal to preoperative expectations. Achievement of MCID was evaluated. Improvement of all outcomes and correlations with satisfaction scores were evaluated using the Student's t-test and Pearson coefficient. Achievement of MCID or meeting expectations as predictors of satisfaction were evaluated and compared using linear regression and Suest test. RESULTS The study included 144 patients. All outcomes significantly improved and demonstrated significant correlations with satisfaction scores (P < 0.001, all). Patients reported a mean expectation of 17.7 (ODI), 1.7 (VAS back), and 0.9 (VAS leg). The majority had their expectations met and achieved MCID. Meeting expectations and MCID achievement demonstrated significant associations with satisfaction scores for all outcomes and time points. Achievement of MCID was a stronger predictor of satisfaction for ODI and VAS back. CONCLUSIONS Meeting preoperative expectations and achievement of an MCID for pain and disability measures was significantly associated with satisfaction. Achievement of MCID may be a more consistent and suitable replacement as a predictor of satisfaction over meeting patient expectations.

Abstract
Although patients with diabetes reportedly have more back pain and worse patient-reported outcomes than those without diabetes after lumbar spine surgery, the impact of diabetes on postoperative recovery in pain or numbness in other regions is not well characterized. In this study, the authors aimed to elucidate the impact of diabetes on postoperative recovery in pain/numbness in four areas (back, buttock, leg, and sole) after lumbar spine surgery. The authors retrospectively reviewed 993 patients (152 with diabetes and 841 without) who underwent decompression and/or fixation within three levels of the lumbar spine at eight hospitals during April 2017–June 2018. Preoperative Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) scores in all four areas, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and Euro quality of life 5-dimension (EQ-5D) were comparable between the groups. The diabetic group showed worse ODI/EQ-5D and greater NRS scores for leg pain 1 year after surgery than the non-diabetic group. Although other postoperative NRS scores tended to be higher in the diabetic group, the between-group differences were not significant. Diabetic neuropathy caused by microvascular changes may induce irreversible nerve damage especially in leg area. Providers can use this information when counseling patients with diabetes about the expected outcomes of spine surgery.
