Hydroxyapatite-incorporation improves bone formation on endosseous PEEK implant in canine tibia

Bone regeneration with hydroxyapatite particles loaded in photo-cross-linkable hydrogel: An experimental study

This study explores the use of in situ cross-linked hyaluronic acid methacryloyl (HAMA) and hydroxyapatite particles (HAP) for bone defect repair. Human periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) were isolated and co-cultured with the HAMA-HAP composite. Osteogenic differentiation was evaluated using Alizarin Red staining, alkaline phosphatase activity quantification, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A cranial defect was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats. This defect was then filled with the HAMA-HAP composite and cross-linked using UV light exposure. Bone formation was assessed through radiographic and histological analyses. The HAMA-HAP composite was found to promote cell viability similarly to pure HAP. It also enhanced gene expression of ALP, OPN, and Runx2, and increased ALP activity and mineralized nodule formation in vitro. Micro-CT scans showed defect restoration in the HAMA-HAP and HAP groups compared to the control group. The HAMA-HAP group exhibited higher Tb.N, Tb.Sp, Tb.Th, and BV/TV. Masson staining showed the HAMA-HAP composite restored the defect site, with new bone formation thicker than in the HAP group. The HAMA-HAP composite showed excellent biocompatibility and promoted osteogenic differentiation of PDLSCs. It effectively repaired cranial defects, indicating its potential for clinical use in bone defect repair.

Wettability and Frictional Studies of PEEK Composites against Co-Cr Alloys with Surface Textures

With the aim of promoting the qualities for total hip joint replacement, the wettability and tribological behaviors of PEEK composites pins with two sets of different fillers (PEEK/CF or PEEK/CF/PTFE/graphite) against Co-Cr alloy discs with five categories of surface textures (polished, orthogonal, spiral, r-θ, and orthogonal combined with spiral) were explored. It is revealed that the existence of CF in PEEK matrix increases the hydrophilicity in addition to the strength of PEEK, while the addition of PTFE increases the hydrophobicity of PEEK. The Co-Cr alloy discs with hydrophilic properties can be adjusted as hydrophobic, with the depth of textured grooves exceeding the critical sag height determined by the contact angle and the groove width. It can be concluded that PEEK/CF/PTFE/graphite composite has a lower wear rate than PEEK only reinforced with CF against Co-Cr alloy, both without surface texture and with shallow or deep grooves. The existence of shallow grooves on the disc surface could help the PEEK blends to achieve a steady friction against Co-Cr alloy in addition to collecting the worn debris. PEEK blend pins with 10 vol% CF, 10 vol% PTFE and 10 vol% graphite can achieve a lower friction coefficient of no more than 0.2 against Co-Cr alloy discs with shallow grooves around 3.5 μm in orthogonal or spiral textures.

Effect of Fiber Type and Content on Surface Quality and Removal Mechanism of Fiber-Reinforced Polyetheretherketone in Ultra-Precision Grinding

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a promising thermo-plastic polymer material due to its excellent mechanical properties. To further improve the mechanical properties of PEEK, different kinds of short fibers are added into the PEEK matrix. The grinding machinability of short-fiber-reinforced PEEK varies with the effect of fiber type and content. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the surface quality and removal mechanism of fiber-reinforced PEEK in ultra-precision grinding. In this paper, different fiber types and mass fractions of short-fiber-reinforced PEEK, including carbon-fiber-reinforced PEEK (CF/PEEK) and glass-fiber-reinforced PEEK (GF/PEEK), are employed. The grinding machinability of short-fiber-reinforced PEEK was investigated using grinding experiments with grinding wheels of different grit sizes. The effects of the fiber type and mass fraction on the surface quality and removal mechanism during grinding were discussed. The results showed that the brittle-ductile transition depth of carbon fiber was much larger than that of glass fiber, so it was easier to achieve ductile removal in grinding with the carbon fiber. Therefore, the ground surface roughness of CF/PEEK was smaller than that of GF/PEEK under the same grinding conditions. With the increase in carbon fiber mass fraction, the ground surface roughness of CF/PEEK decreased due to the higher hardness. The brittle-ductile transition depth of glass fiber was small, and it was easy to achieve brittle removal when grinding. When the glass fiber removal mode was brittle removal, the GF/PEEK surface roughness increased with the increase in glass fiber content.
